Chapter 6 - THE MAN I MARRIED NEVER EXISTEDOnce you realize someone has lied to you for years, memory becomes evidence.

That bothered me.

He was thin, pale, and almost fragile behind the glass partition of the federal detention center.

Men who destroy lives should look different from everyone else.

They rarely do.

Samuel sat beside me.

A federal investigator named Agent Rachel Monroe sat on my other side.

Harrow picked up the phone.

I did the same.

“You’re Vivian.”

It was not a question.

“Yes.”

His eyes dropped.

“I knew eventually you’d come.”

“Tell me what Adrian did.”

He laughed without humor.

“Straight to it.”

“I’ve lost enough time.”

Harrow breathed slowly.

“Your husband approached me because of research I was conducting on certain reproductive medications.”

“What research?”

“Unapproved combinations.”

Agent Monroe leaned forward.

Harrow continued.

“He wanted information about side effects. Hormonal disruption. Implantation failure.”

My fingers tightened around the receiver.

“Did he give me anything?”

“I never met you.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Harrow looked at the table.

“Yes.”

Samuel shifted beside me.

“What?”

“A compounded medication. It could interfere with progesterone absorption.”

I could hear my own heartbeat.

“Would it cause miscarriage?”

“It could increase the risk.”

“Did Adrian know?”

“Yes.”

The room blurred.

“How many times?”

“I provided medication twice.”

Twice.

My first miscarriage had been devastating but medically explainable.

My second and third came after Adrian had insisted on managing my injections because he wanted to “take care of me.”

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

Harrow looked at me with something resembling shame.

“He said pregnancy would complicate a restructuring.”

Samuel spoke.

“What restructuring?”

“Ownership.”

There it was.

Adrian did not only want me away from the company.

Under our estate documents at the time, if we had a child, portions of my voting shares would eventually be locked into a family trust.

Adrian could influence me.

He could not easily control an independent trust created for our child.

I stared through the glass.

“How much did he pay you?”

“Two hundred fifty thousand.”

My child.

My health.

My grief.

Worth a quarter million dollars.

Agent Monroe asked several more questions.

I barely heard them.

When we left, I vomited in the parking lot.

Samuel stood nearby without speaking.

Finally, I wiped my mouth.

“I want him arrested.”

“We need corroboration.”

“Harrow confessed.”

“He’s a convicted criminal bargaining for consideration. We need records connecting Adrian directly.”

“Find them.”

“We will.”

My phone rang.

Nora.

“Vivian, we have another problem.”

“What?”

“Three major retailers just froze our orders.”

My stomach sank.

“Why?”

“Thorne Luxury told them Vale House may lose trademark rights.”

Marcus was strangling us commercially.

Within hours, suppliers began demanding early payment.

A bank reviewing the secret $200 million credit facility warned us that suspension of Adrian might trigger default provisions.

It was brilliant.

Adrian had planted financial explosives throughout the company.

Removing him activated them.

I spent the afternoon fighting to keep Vale House alive.

At six, Nora walked into my office.

“You haven’t eaten.”

“I’m fine.”

“You say that before every disaster.”

She put a sandwich on my desk.

I smiled weakly.

Nora had joined us as an intern nine years earlier.

Adrian barely remembered her birthday.

I knew she had helped support her parents after her father’s stroke.

That was the difference between Adrian and me.

He saw employees as an audience.

I saw people.

At 7:30, the elevator opened.

Celeste walked out.

Nora immediately stood.

“No.”

“I need to see Vivian.”

“You’ve done enough.”

“Nora.”

I nodded.

“Let her in.”

Celeste entered looking nothing like the woman from the runway.

No makeup.

Hair tied back.

Oversized sunglasses despite being indoors.

She removed them.

A bruise darkened her cheek.

“Did Adrian do that?”

She looked away.

“Celeste.”

“Yes.”

I felt no satisfaction.

Only disgust.

“When?”

“Last night.”

“Why?”

“He knows I called you.”

She placed a flash drive on my desk.

“What is this?”

“Proof.”

“Of?”

“Everything I could copy.”

I did not touch it.

“Why are you helping me?”

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Because I thought I was stealing your husband.”

She swallowed.

“I didn’t understand I was helping him destroy you.”

Celeste told me Adrian met her eighteen months earlier.

At first, the affair was exactly what it looked like.

Gifts.

Hotels.

Private dinners.

Then he began using her connections.

Celeste introduced him to Marcus Thorne.

Adrian claimed he wanted investment.

Instead they built a plan to strip Vale House’s trademarks, collapse its value, force me to sell, and rebuild the brand under a company they controlled.

“And the runway?” I asked.

“Adrian wanted you humiliated publicly.”

“Why?”

“To make you look unstable when you fought back.”

I plugged in the drive.

Folders appeared.

Messages.

Contracts.

Audio recordings.

Then one video.

Celeste’s face tightened.

“You need to watch that.”

I clicked.

Adrian appeared on-screen sitting in a hotel suite with Marcus.

Marcus said, “Once Vivian signs the restructuring agreement Friday, there’s no going back.”

Adrian smiled.

“She’ll sign.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

Adrian lifted his glass.

“Then we remind her what happened the last time she refused to step aside.”

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

“What did he mean?”

Celeste whispered, “I don’t know.”

But an hour later, we found another file.

A scanned police report.

It concerned a car accident four years earlier.

An accident I had survived.

An accident investigators had ruled mechanical failure.

The report contained a handwritten note from Adrian.

PROBLEM SOLVED. SHE WON’T BE DRIVING FOR MONTHS.

Samuel looked at me.

My blood turned cold.

The miscarriages were not the beginning.

May you like

Adrian had been trying to remove me from Vale House for years.

And maybe, just maybe, he had once tried to remove me permanently.
