Chapter 5 - CLAIRE’S MOTHERClaire remembered her mother in fragments.

Lavender soap.

A red coat.

Songs hummed while washing dishes.

Then one morning, when Claire was seven, she disappeared.

Her father told Claire she had left them.

No explanation.

No funeral.

No goodbye.

Three years later, her father drank himself to death.

Claire entered foster care.

For eighteen years, she believed her mother had chosen to leave.

Now Caleb Blackwood sat across from her claiming she had been murdered.

“Untie me.”

Caleb raised an eyebrow.

“I’m serious.”

“You’re surrounded by armed men.”

“Then you don’t need ropes.”

Caleb studied her.

Then cut the restraints.

Claire rubbed her wrists.

“Start talking.”

Her mother’s name had been Laura Bennett.

She was a registered nurse at St. Catherine’s Hospital twenty-one years earlier.

She treated Evelyn Blackwood after Evelyn fled Victor’s father.

Laura discovered evidence of repeated sedative injections, bruising, and an illegal psychiatric commitment order signed by Dr. Whitmore.

Evelyn had not merely run away.

She had escaped confinement.

Laura helped her disappear.

A month later, Laura vanished.

Caleb believed Mason’s father ordered the murder.

“Believed?”

“I don’t have proof.”

Claire stood.

“Then don’t tell me it happened like you know.”

Caleb accepted the anger.

“You’re right.”

That surprised her.

Most Blackwoods did not admit uncertainty.

Caleb looked like Ethan but carried himself differently.

Ethan was ice.

Caleb was a blade.

Both could kill.

Only one looked like he might enjoy frightening people.

Claire glanced toward the door.

“Did you attack the estate?”

“No.”

“Hospital?”

“No.”

“Cemetery?”

“No.”

“You kidnapped me.”

“I removed you before Mason’s men did.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“That’s kidnapping with better marketing.”

Caleb almost smiled.

He showed her surveillance photographs.

Mason meeting Dr. Whitmore.

Mason meeting the hospital technician.

Mason speaking with Victor’s chief financial officer.

Then one image stopped Claire.

A photograph of Ethan.

Meeting Mason.

Two weeks before Noah’s birth.

“What is this?”

Caleb’s expression darkened.

“My brother has secrets too.”

Claire stared.

Ethan and Mason sat in a private restaurant.

A document lay between them.

“Maybe it was business.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t believe that.”

“I don’t believe anyone anymore.”

Caleb explained that he had secretly returned to Chicago three months earlier.

He had learned Rachel was pregnant only two weeks before Noah’s birth.

He wanted to reveal himself.

Then Mason contacted him.

Mason threatened to kill Rachel if Caleb appeared.

“So you stayed hidden.”

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice sharpened.

“And Noah?”

“I didn’t know they would target him.”

“You should have told Ethan.”

Caleb’s eyes hardened.

“Ethan helped my father imprison me.”

Claire stopped.

Victor had said he alone arranged Caleb’s disappearance.

Another lie.

Caleb showed her medical records.

During those six weeks overseas, he had been held in a private psychiatric facility.

Drugged.

Restrained.

Ethan visited twice.

Claire felt sick.

“He knew?”

“He signed documents authorizing treatment.”

Claire looked at the scar on Caleb’s jaw.

“What treatment?”

Caleb did not answer.

That told her enough.

Claire remembered Ethan protecting Noah.

Protecting Rachel.

Protecting her.

Could both versions of him be true?

A man capable of loyalty.

A man capable of terrible things.

Yes.

She already knew the answer.

A phone rang.

Caleb answered.

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

Claire heard shouting.

Then Caleb stood.

“Get the car.”

“What?”

“Mason took Rachel.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

“And Noah?”

“Ethan has him.”

Caleb grabbed his coat.

Claire followed.

“You’re not coming.”

“Try stopping me.”

He looked at her.

Then nodded once.

They drove to an abandoned hospital on Chicago’s South Side.

The building had closed ten years earlier.

Mason had chosen it deliberately.

Old medical rooms.

Old secrets.

Rachel was tied to an operating table.

Mason stood beside her.

Dr. Whitmore stood near the wall.

Claire felt rage.

Mason looked ordinary.

That was the frightening part.

Clean suit.

Calm face.

Friendly eyes.

The kind of man who remembered birthdays and held doors.

“Claire Bennett,” Mason said. “The heroic nurse.”

“Let her go.”

Mason smiled.

“You all think this is about Rachel.”

He looked at Caleb.

“It never was.”

Whitmore rolled in a portable incubator.

Empty.

Claire understood first.

“They want Noah.”

Mason nodded.

Caleb raised his pistol.

Mason pressed a syringe against Rachel’s neck.

“Lower it.”

Caleb obeyed.

Then Ethan’s voice sounded behind them.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Ethan entered carrying Noah.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“What are you doing?”

Ethan walked toward Mason.

“Ending this.”

Caleb stared at his brother.

“You brought him?”

“You wanted the baby,” Ethan said. “Here.”

Claire could not believe it.

Mason smiled.

“I knew you were smarter than Caleb.”

Ethan handed Noah to Claire instead.

Then he tossed something at Mason’s feet.

A phone.

The screen showed a live broadcast.

Federal agents.

Police.

Dozens of armed officers surrounding the building.

Mason’s smile vanished.

Ethan looked at him.

“You really thought I’d give you my nephew?”

Mason stabbed the syringe toward Rachel.

Caleb fired.

The bullet struck Mason’s shoulder.

Whitmore ran.

Claire saw him grab the incubator handle.

Why take an empty incubator?

Then she noticed a metal case beneath it.

He was taking evidence.

Claire ran after him.

Whitmore knocked over a cart.

Claire jumped it.

He entered the pharmacy.

She followed.

He pulled a gun.

Claire stopped.

Whitmore smiled.

“You should have stayed a nurse.”

“I am a nurse.”

“Not anymore.”

“You’re wrong.”

Claire looked past him.

At the oxygen cylinders.

Whitmore followed her eyes too late.

Claire threw a metal tray at the fire alarm.

Sirens blared.

Sprinklers erupted.

Whitmore flinched.

Claire lunged.

The gun fired.

Pain tore across her shoulder.

She hit the floor.

Whitmore ran.

Then someone tackled him.

Evelyn Blackwood.

The sixty-year-old woman struck him with a fire extinguisher.

Once.

Twice.

Whitmore collapsed.

Claire pressed her hand to her bleeding shoulder.

Evelyn knelt beside her.

“You’re all right.”

Claire laughed weakly.

“I’m starting to hate when Blackwoods say that.”

Police flooded the building.

Rachel survived.

Mason survived.

Whitmore was arrested.

For the first time, Claire believed the nightmare might be ending.

Then Ethan approached.

Caleb stood across the room.

The brothers stared at each other.

Neither spoke.

Claire looked from one to the other.

“Someone better explain those psychiatric papers.”

Ethan’s face changed.

Caleb said:

“Ask him why he signed them.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

He lowered his eyes.

“Because Caleb asked me to.”

Caleb went still.

“What?”

Ethan reached inside his coat.

He removed an old audio recorder.

“I’ve been waiting eight months to give you this.”

He pressed play.

Caleb’s own voice filled the room.

Weak.

Drugged.

But unmistakable.

“Ethan… whatever Father asks… sign it. Make him believe you’re with him. Find out who is watching me.”

Caleb stared.

“I don’t remember that.”

“You were sedated.”

Ethan’s voice broke slightly.

“I never betrayed you.”

Caleb looked away.

Claire watched years of hatred crack apart in silence.

Then Mason, bleeding on the floor, began laughing.

“You idiots.”

Ethan turned.

Mason smiled through blood.

“You still think I poisoned Noah?”

Claire stared at him.

“You paid the technician.”

“Yes.”

“You replaced the line.”

“Yes.”

“You tried to kill him.”

Mason’s smile widened.

“No.”

Claire felt cold.

“What did you put in the IV?”

Mason looked at Noah.

“Something designed to stop him long enough for Whitmore to declare him dead.”

Rachel screamed.

Caleb stepped forward.

“Why?”

Mason whispered:

“Because Noah was never supposed to stay in that hospital.”

Claire understood.

They had not planned to murder the baby.

They planned to steal him.

May you like

Mason looked directly at Ethan.

“And the person who wanted him is still free.”
