Chapter 8 - FATHER AND SONArthur had dreamed about working beside Daniel again.

She did not deny the signature.

When Arthur showed her the document, she simply sat down.

“I wondered when you would find that.”

Arthur stared at the woman who had organized his life for forty-one years.

“You authorized payments to Dane Global.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep Daniel alive.”

Arthur froze.

Margaret looked toward Ethan and Lily, who were asleep in an adjacent conference room.

“After Daniel entered prison, someone contacted me.”

“Who?”

“Nathan Caldwell.”

Arthur felt rage rise.

“He said Daniel had enemies inside.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means people were being paid to hurt him.”

Arthur’s face changed.

Margaret continued.

“Caldwell offered protection.”

“In exchange for company money?”

“Yes.”

“Forty-eight million dollars?”

“Not all of that was protection.”

“How much?”

“About six million over twenty years.”

Arthur stared at her.

“You secretly paid criminals six million dollars.”

“I secretly paid them not to murder your son.”

Arthur slammed his hand against the table.

“You should have told me!”

Margaret stood.

“Told you?”

Her voice cracked for the first time Arthur could remember.

“You wouldn’t open his letters!”

Arthur stopped.

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I watched you return envelopes from your only child because you were too proud to admit you might be wrong.”

Arthur said nothing.

“I begged you twice to visit him.”

“You never told me someone threatened him.”

“Because Caldwell told me if you became involved, Daniel would be killed.”

Arthur turned away.

Margaret continued.

“The first payment happened after Daniel was stabbed in prison.”

Arthur spun.

“Daniel was stabbed?”

“Nineteen years ago.”

“No one told me.”

“He almost died.”

Arthur gripped the table.

Margaret’s voice softened.

“Daniel asked the prison not to contact you.”

The room went silent.

Arthur imagined his son bleeding in a prison infirmary and deciding his father would not care.

That image nearly destroyed him.

“What about the other forty-two million?”

“I don’t know.”

“You authorized it.”

“My signature was copied.”

Arthur stared.

“Martin?”

“I believe so.”

“Why keep making protection payments after Caldwell supposedly died?”

“Because I never believed he was dead.”

Arthur sat slowly.

Margaret had done something illegal.

Reckless.

Dangerous.

But perhaps not disloyal.

“Why didn’t you tell me after Rebecca died?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three years ago. You had just undergone heart surgery.”

Arthur remembered.

Margaret had asked him to meet privately at his lake house.

He canceled because Martin wanted him in New York for an acquisition.

Arthur almost laughed at the cruelty of it.

Again, Martin had occupied space where Daniel should have been.

Rachel entered.

“The emergency hearing is tomorrow morning.”

Arthur looked up.

“So soon?”

“The prosecution isn’t opposing temporary release.”

“Why?”

“Because Owen Mercer just surrendered to federal authorities.”

Arthur stood.

“He did?”

“He brought original server logs.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Rachel continued.

“And a sworn statement.”

Arthur whispered, “Daniel’s coming home.”

“Possibly tomorrow.”

Ethan woke when Arthur told him.

The boy stared as if afraid to believe good news.

“Really?”

“Really.”

Lily jumped into Arthur’s arms.

“Daddy’s coming!”

Arthur laughed despite himself.

For several hours, joy overshadowed the investigation.

Then Arthur received a call from the FBI.

Nathan Caldwell had been identified entering Canada under a false passport three months earlier.

His current location remained unknown.

Martin Cole was missing.

Diane Keene was arrested on charges related to child endangerment and obstruction.

She had admitted receiving money from Martin to search Rebecca’s belongings.

But she claimed she never knew anyone planned to harm the children.

Arthur did not care.

She had locked Ethan in a basement.

She had made hungry children afraid to ask for food.

Consequences could wait for court.

The next morning, the courthouse overflowed with reporters.

News had leaked.

MILLIONAIRE’S SON MAY HAVE BEEN WRONGFULLY IMPRISONED FOR 22 YEARS

Arthur hated the headline.

Daniel had a name.

He was more than “the millionaire’s son.”

When Daniel entered the courtroom wearing prison clothes, Ethan and Lily stood.

Daniel saw them.

Then saw Arthur.

Arthur did not look away.

Rachel presented evidence.

Original server logs.

Owen’s affidavit.

Rebecca’s documents.

Financial records linking Martin to the stolen funds.

Evidence that prosecutor Nathan Caldwell withheld potentially exculpatory information.

The judge listened for forty-three minutes.

Then removed her glasses.

“This court rarely encounters allegations this disturbing.”

Daniel sat perfectly still.

“Given substantial evidence undermining confidence in the original conviction, and given the state’s decision not to oppose release while a full review proceeds…”

Arthur grabbed Ethan’s hand.

“…Mr. Bennett will be released today.”

Lily screamed.

The judge almost smiled.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Arthur bowed his head.

Twenty-two years.

Gone.

Nothing could restore them.

But when Daniel walked through the courthouse doors three hours later wearing borrowed clothes, his children ran toward him.

Ethan hit him like a football tackle.

Lily wrapped around his waist.

Daniel fell to his knees.

He cried into their hair.

Reporters shouted questions.

Arthur stood several feet away.

He did not intrude.

Daniel eventually looked up.

Their eyes met.

Arthur expected nothing.

Then Daniel extended one hand.

Arthur approached.

Daniel rose.

For a long moment, father and son stood facing each other.

“I’m sorry,” Arthur whispered.

Daniel’s jaw trembled.

“That doesn’t give me twenty-two years back.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t bring Rebecca back.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t fix what happened.”

“No.”

Arthur’s eyes filled.

“But I will spend every day I have left trying to make sure you never doubt that I believe you now.”

Daniel stared at him.

Then he stepped forward.

Not into a full embrace.

Not yet.

But he gripped Arthur’s shoulder.

For Arthur, it was enough.

They returned to Arthur’s penthouse.

Daniel moved through the expensive rooms as if visiting a museum.

Ethan showed him the bedroom Arthur had prepared.

Lily showed him the stuffed rabbit Arthur bought her.

Daniel looked toward his father.

“You did all this?”

“I had help.”

Daniel noticed an empty frame on the mantel.

“What’s that for?”

Arthur swallowed.

“A family photograph.”

Daniel looked away.

Later that night, the children fell asleep beside their father on the sofa.

Arthur covered them with blankets.

Daniel opened his eyes.

“You really bought an entire bakery?”

Arthur smiled.

“It seemed necessary.”

“You could’ve bought them two sandwiches.”

“They looked hungry.”

Daniel studied him.

“You always did solve emotional problems with money.”

Arthur’s smile faded.

“I’m trying to learn better methods.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Arthur’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Martin Cole standing beside Nathan Caldwell.

Alive.

Behind them was a building Arthur recognized.

Bennett Logistics’ primary data center.

Below the photograph:

MIDNIGHT TOMORROW. DESTROY REBECCA’S FILES OR WE DESTROY YOUR COMPANY AND EVERY EMPLOYEE INSIDE IT.

Daniel read over Arthur’s shoulder.

His expression hardened.

“You’re not going alone.”

Arthur looked at him.

“You just got out of prison.”

“And I lost twenty-two years because nobody stopped them the first time.”

May you like

Daniel stood.

“This time we finish it.”
