Chapter 10 - The Last Dance of Adrian ColeLuca crossed the room before Adrian could recover.

Temporary release.
The paperwork appeared legitimate.
A supervised transfer to Chicago so he could assist investigators in identifying financial records stored at the Moretti Foundation.
Agent Monroe never requested it.
Neither did the prosecutor.
Yet the order carried an authentic federal judge’s signature.
Judge Thomas Calder.
Monroe stared at it.
“Number Twelve.”
Luca nodded.
Calder had presided over organized-crime cases for nineteen years.
Respectable.
Decorated.
Untouchable.
Until now.
They quietly investigated.
Financial records showed nothing.
Phone logs showed nothing.
Then Dominic remembered Matteo’s list.
Each member of the Thirteen received favors indirectly.
Never cash.
Judge Calder’s son had been admitted to a prestigious private university despite failing grades.
The tuition came from a charitable scholarship funded through a Salvatore shell corporation.
Enough to investigate.
Not enough to arrest.
So Monroe made a dangerous decision.
They would use Calder’s order.
Luca would attend the gala.
Publicly, he would appear under federal escort.
Secretly, every agent Monroe trusted would surround the building.
Sofia hated the plan.
“Adrian asked for exactly this.”
“That’s why we know where he’ll be,” Luca said.
“He also asked for Lily.”
“She won’t be there.”
Sofia looked at him.
“You said that before.”
“And I mean it.”
Lily would remain at the farmhouse with two agents.
At least that was the plan.
September 18 arrived cold and rainy.
Hundreds gathered at the Moretti Foundation Children’s Hospital.
Reporters surrounded the entrance.
Luca’s temporary appearance created a media frenzy.
The former Wolf of Chicago stepped from a federal SUV wearing a dark suit and no tie.
For the first time, cameras saw him not as an untouchable crime boss but as a defendant helping dismantle his own empire.
Sofia arrived separately.
She wore a simple navy dress.
When Luca saw her, the noise disappeared.
“You came.”
“You knew I would.”
“I hoped you wouldn’t.”
“You should know me better.”
He smiled.
“I do.”
Bianca also came.
The crowd reacted instantly.
She had avoided public events since her kidnapping.
Her hair was shorter.
Her style simpler.
No diamonds.
She walked directly toward Sofia.
Reporters shouted questions.
Bianca ignored them.
“I owe you an apology.”
Sofia glanced around.
“You don’t have to do this here.”
“I do.”
Bianca faced the cameras.
“I humiliated your daughter because I was insecure, arrogant, and cruel. Nothing that happened afterward excuses that.”
Sofia was surprised.
Bianca continued.
“The million dollars wasn’t a joke once I made it in front of a child. I’ve transferred my own million into Lily’s education trust.”
Sofia blinked.
“Bianca—”
“Consider it the most expensive lesson in manners I’ve ever had.”
For the first time, Sofia smiled.
“I accept the apology.”
Bianca exhaled.
“Thank God.”
Inside, the gala began.
Judge Calder appeared at 8:40.
Monroe watched from across the room.
Calder approached Luca.
“You shouldn’t be talking to me.”
Luca smiled pleasantly.
“Yet here you are.”
“I arranged this release.”
“I know.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I didn’t thank you.”
Calder’s expression tightened.
“Adrian wants to speak with you.”
There it was.
Confirmation.
Luca whispered, “Where?”
Calder slipped a card into his hand.
ROOF. 9:15. ALONE.
Luca handed it to Monroe moments later.
At 9:14, he entered the rooftop access stairwell.
Agents monitored from hidden positions.
Sofia remained downstairs with Dominic.
Bianca stayed near the ballroom exit.
Luca reached the roof.
Rain hit his face.
Adrian stood near the edge.
No visible weapon.
“You came.”
“You threatened a child.”
“That child destroyed four years of planning with a dance.”
“She’s talented.”
Adrian laughed.
“Still arrogant.”
“What do you want?”
“Salvatore released.”
“Impossible.”
“Nothing is impossible.”
Adrian gestured toward the skyline.
“For thirty years your family ruled this city because people believed the Morettis were inevitable.”
“The world changes.”
“You sound domesticated.”
“Fatherhood.”
Adrian sneered.
“Where’s Lily?”
“Safe.”
“Wrong.”
Luca’s blood froze.
Adrian lifted a tablet.
Video appeared.
The Wisconsin farmhouse.
One guard unconscious.
Another missing.
Lily’s bedroom empty.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You spent so much time looking for Number Twelve that nobody wondered about Number Thirteen.”
Luca’s voice became deadly.
“Who?”
A woman stepped from the rooftop stairwell.
Sofia.
Luca’s confusion lasted one second.
Then he noticed the gun pressed against her back.
The person holding it emerged behind her.
Agent Rachel Monroe.
Luca stared.
“No.”
Monroe looked almost apologetic.
“Number Thirteen.”
Everything rearranged itself.
Her perfect access.
Her knowledge.
Her ability to control investigations.
The arrests she supposedly made.
Some members of the Thirteen had not disappeared.
She had moved them.
Protected them.
Sofia’s face was furious.
“She took Lily.”
Monroe smiled.
“She is safe.”
“For now,” Adrian added.
Luca’s hands curled.
“You used Matteo’s evidence to eliminate your own people.”
“People loyal to Salvatore,” Monroe corrected.
“Adrian and I have different ambitions.”
Adrian looked toward her.
Luca noticed the tension.
Not partners.
Rivals.
Useful.
“What ambition?”
Monroe smiled.
“A legitimate empire.”
She wanted Luca’s businesses after forfeiture.
Construction.
Real estate.
Logistics.
Billions in assets transferred through government seizures, then quietly sold to controlled corporations.
The oldest trick.
Steal with paperwork.
“Where is my daughter?”
Monroe glanced at Adrian.
That tiny glance told Luca something.
She didn’t know.
Adrian had changed the plan.
Sofia saw it too.
“You lost control of him.”
Monroe’s expression hardened.
Adrian laughed.
“I never belonged to you.”
He pulled a gun.
Everything happened at once.
Monroe pushed Sofia aside.
Agents below heard shouting.
Luca tackled Adrian.
A shot fired.
Monroe ran toward the stairs.
Sofia grabbed her.
They crashed against the door.
Adrian punched Luca.
Luca drove him into the railing.
“You should have died in the lake.”
Adrian smiled through blood.
“So should Sofia.”
Luca hit him again.
“Where is Lily?”
“Where it started.”
“What?”
Adrian shoved away.
“Where your father died.”
The Moretti family home.
Not the mansion Luca lived in now.
The old house in Lincoln Park where Giovanni had collapsed at breakfast.
Adrian jumped toward the adjacent roof using a narrow maintenance platform.
Luca followed.
Federal agents reached the roof.
Monroe was arrested.
Adrian disappeared down a fire escape.
Luca didn’t chase.
He already knew where to go.
Dominic drove.
Sofia sat beside Luca.
They raced through Chicago.
The old Moretti house had been empty for years.
When they arrived, the front door stood open.
Luca entered.
No guards.
No alarms.
Then music began playing.
The rooftop song.
Soft piano.
Luca moved toward the dining room.
Lily sat at the enormous table.
Untouched.
A plate of chocolate-chip pancakes in front of her.
Adrian stood behind her.
A gun rested on the table.
“Daddy!”
Luca almost collapsed with relief.
Adrian placed one hand on Lily’s shoulder.
“Stay there.”
Sofia whispered, “Baby, don’t move.”
Lily looked frightened.
Adrian smiled.
“This is the room Giovanni Moretti died in.”
Luca stared at him.
“I know.”
“Salvatore thought killing him would create the future.”
Adrian lifted the pistol.
“I’m going to prove he was right.”
Lily suddenly looked at the floor.
Then at Luca.
Her little foot moved.
One tap.
Two.
Luca stared.
The dance.
Lily spun from the chair exactly as Sofia had taught her.
Adrian instinctively reached to grab her.
May you like
That single innocent spin moved Lily away from the gun.
Luca lunged.
