Chapter 9 - What Caroline Was Trying to SaveAgent Shaw traced the call to an industrial district outside Yonkers.

Lucas screamed when officers approached her.

“No!”

It was the clearest word he had spoken all night.

Elena knelt.

“It’s okay.”

“No!”

He wrapped both arms around her waist.

An officer gently stepped back.

Harrison watched security footage repeatedly.

Elena entered his office.

She carried the fuel container.

There was no question.

But something felt wrong.

“What time did she enter?”

“11:47,” Daniel said.

Harrison looked at his phone.

“At 11:47 Elena was with Lucas.”

Daniel paused.

“You’re sure?”

“I was outside the dining table.”

Elena had remained beneath that table for nearly two hours.

Daniel checked secondary cameras.

The dining room footage showed Elena continuously from 10:58 until 12:51.

Two Elenas.

“That isn’t her.”

Daniel enlarged the office image.

Same height.

Same uniform.

Same dark hair.

But the face remained angled away.

Someone had dressed like Elena.

The fingerprints still bothered Harrison.

Elena looked at the gasoline container.

“My prints are on it because it came from the gardening shed.”

“You’ve handled it?”

“I moved supplies last week.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Frame job.”

Harrison turned toward the burning window.

Martin was getting desperate.

And desperate men made mistakes.

Federal agents arrived before sunrise.

The lead investigator, Special Agent Miriam Shaw, watched Caroline’s recording twice.

Then she examined the financial records.

“This may be bigger than attempted murder.”

Harrison frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“Your company has been moving funds through shell companies tied to organized cargo theft, bribery, and insurance fraud.”

“I didn’t authorize any of that.”

“I believe you.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever designed this system also created documentation suggesting you did.”

Harrison stared at her.

Martin had not merely planned to steal from him.

He planned to make Harrison the criminal.

“Why kill Caroline?”

“She found the structure.”

Daniel added, “And she might have found something else.”

He produced the final folder from Caroline’s safe.

It contained adoption records.

Harrison frowned.

“Whose?”

Elena leaned closer.

Then gasped.

The name belonged to Sofia Ruiz.

Her dead sister.

Harrison looked at her.

“I thought Sofia died at seventeen.”

“She did.”

“She had a child?”

Elena went pale.

“No.”

Agent Shaw examined the record.

“Sofia gave birth six months before her death.”

Elena shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

The father’s name was blank.

The child had been adopted privately.

Caroline Bennett signed as witness.

Elena sank into a chair.

“Why wouldn’t my mother tell me?”

Harrison read the adoptive family name.

Vale.

Martin Vale.

Everyone went silent.

Martin had adopted Sofia’s child.

A daughter.

“Martin never had children,” Harrison said.

Agent Shaw shook her head.

“According to this, he did.”

Daniel searched public records.

The adoption was later sealed.

A death certificate followed three years afterward.

Child: Natalie Vale.

Cause: accidental drowning.

Elena covered her mouth.

“Sofia’s baby died?”

Agent Shaw looked troubled.

“Maybe.”

She turned the page.

A handwritten note from Caroline had been clipped behind the certificate.

Natalie did not drown. Martin changed her identity. Find Rebecca.

Harrison frowned.

“Rebecca who?”

Elena suddenly looked up.

“My mother.”

Harrison stared at her.

“Your mother’s name is Rebecca?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Elena looked devastated.

“She died six years ago.”

Another dead witness.

Agent Shaw examined the papers.

“Caroline spent years researching Martin.”

“Why?”

Elena stared at Sofia’s picture.

“Because she knew Sofia’s baby.”

Harrison slowly understood.

Caroline’s fear had not begun months before her death.

It began seventeen years earlier.

“Who was the baby’s father?” he asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel returned from the computer.

His face had changed.

“I found Sofia’s hospital file.”

“How?”

“Archived insurance litigation.”

He turned the screen.

Sofia had been treated after the car crash that killed her.

At admission, the hospital recorded next of kin.

Mother: Rebecca Ruiz.

Sister: Elena Ruiz.

Brother: Miguel Ruiz.

Emergency contact:

Martin Vale.

Relationship:

Father of minor child.

Elena stood so quickly the chair fell.

“No.”

Harrison felt sick.

Martin, then in his late thirties, had fathered a child with seventeen-year-old Sofia.

If the dates were right, she may have been sixteen when she became pregnant.

Elena shook her head violently.

“No.”

Agent Shaw spoke gently.

“We need to verify.”

“No!”

Lucas ran toward Elena.

She held him while trembling.

Harrison finally understood Caroline’s connection to Martin.

Caroline had known what happened to Sofia.

She had helped hide the child from scandal.

Then discovered something worse.

Harrison looked at the fake death certificate.

“If Natalie didn’t die…”

Daniel’s fingers moved across the keyboard.

“Then she’d be seventeen now.”

Agent Shaw stood.

“Find her.”

Two hours later, they did.

Natalie Vale had another name.

Natalie Parker.

She lived twenty miles away.

And according to school records, she had vanished three days before Caroline’s accident.

Harrison stared at the date.

Not fourteen months ago.

Seventeen months.

“She disappeared before Caroline died.”

Agent Shaw nodded.

Then Harrison’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A girl whispered.

“Mr. Cole?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Natalie.”

Everyone froze.

Her breathing was ragged.

“I think Martin Vale knows you found the files.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you safe?”

“No.”

A door slammed somewhere behind her.

Natalie began crying.

Then she said the words that changed the investigation.

“Your wife didn’t die because of the money.”

Harrison gripped the phone.

“Why did she die?”

May you like

“Because she found me.”

The line went dead.
