Chapter 4 - The Price of a DaughterJulian West had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without raising his voice.

That night it felt like a trap.

Julian ordered every gate closed.

Security swept the estate.

The intruder had entered through an old service entrance and gone directly to the third-floor archive.

Nothing expensive was missing.

No jewelry.

No electronics.

No art.

Only one locked cabinet had been forced open.

Eleanor’s personal files.

Julian stared at the broken cabinet.

“Who knew these were here?”

The head of security, Thomas Reed, shook his head.

“Very few people.”

“Names.”

“You. Mrs. West, when she was alive. Me. Mr. Harrow. Possibly household management.”

“And Vivian?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She has access to the residence.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I don’t know.”

Vivian appeared behind them.

“You are treating me like a criminal.”

Julian turned.

“I’m treating everyone like someone broke into my dead wife’s files tonight.”

Vivian’s face hardened.

“I was standing beside you when it happened.”

“Yes.”

“So how could I possibly have done it?”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“You didn’t need to.”

Downstairs, Anna sat with Sophie.

The little girl had refused to go to bed unless Anna stayed.

Julian had surprised everyone by agreeing.

Anna helped Sophie change into pajamas and noticed something odd.

A cardboard box sat beside the child’s closet.

Inside were framed photographs of Eleanor.

Anna recognized them from the house.

“Why are these here?”

Sophie lowered her eyes.

“Vivian took them down.”

“When?”

“After she moved in.”

“She lives here?”

“Sometimes.”

Anna’s stomach tightened.

“Did your dad know she removed the pictures?”

Sophie shook her head.

“She said Daddy needed to move on.”

Anna touched Eleanor’s face in one photograph.

She remembered her only vaguely.

Elegant but warm.

The kind of wealthy woman who remembered employees’ birthdays.

The woman who had once paid Anna’s college application fees without telling anyone.

Sophie crawled onto the bed.

“Anna?”

“Yes?”

“Do you think my mommy knew your mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Do you think they were friends?”

Anna smiled sadly.

“I think they trusted each other.”

Sophie considered that.

Then she whispered, “Mommy left something in my room.”

Anna froze.

“What?”

Sophie climbed off the bed.

“My secret.”

She went to the bookshelf.

Behind a row of children’s novels was a tiny brass key.

Anna stared at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“Mommy gave it to me.”

“You were five when she died.”

“I remember.”

Sophie’s eyes became distant.

“She told me it opened the place where songs sleep.”

Anna’s pulse quickened.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

They searched the room.

Music box.

Piano bench.

Toy chest.

Nothing.

Then Anna noticed an old wooden panel behind the nursery rocking chair.

Small carved musical notes decorated the edge.

“Songs sleep.”

She moved the chair.

There was a keyhole.

Sophie’s eyes widened.

Anna inserted the brass key.

Click.

The panel opened.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay a small digital recorder.

And an envelope.

Sophie reached for it.

Anna stopped her.

“Wait.”

She called Julian.

He arrived two minutes later with Thomas.

Vivian followed.

“What is going on now?” Vivian demanded.

Sophie pointed.

“Mommy’s secret.”

Julian’s face broke when he saw the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

JULIAN — ONLY IF I CANNOT TELL YOU MYSELF.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside was one page.

Julian,

If you are reading this, then I waited too long.

The foundation accounts are being manipulated. I believe Miles is moving charitable funds through shell vendors connected to Mercer Holdings.

Vivian stumbled backward.

Julian read on.

Vivian Mercer knows. I confronted her. She claims she was trying to protect her family, but millions are missing.

Julian stopped.

His eyes lifted.

Vivian’s face was white.

“That’s a lie.”

Anna stared at her.

Julian continued.

Rosa helped me copy the records because I no longer know which company systems are safe. There are two copies. One with me. One hidden by Rosa.

If something happens, do not assume it was an accident until you know the truth.

Julian lowered the letter.

The room was silent.

Vivian shook her head rapidly.

“Eleanor hated me.”

“You told me you barely knew her,” Julian said.

Vivian opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Julian looked destroyed.

Anna realized the truth was worse than betrayal.

He had let Vivian into Sophie’s life.

Into Eleanor’s home.

He had almost married a woman Eleanor herself had warned him about.

Thomas stepped forward.

“Sir, we should contact law enforcement.”

“Yes.”

Vivian panicked.

“Julian, please. I can explain.”

“Then explain.”

“My family’s company was in trouble. Miles moved funds temporarily.”

“You knew?”

“I knew something.”

“How much?”

“I don’t know.”

“You lied.”

“I was scared!”

“And Eleanor?”

“I never hurt Eleanor.”

Julian’s eyes sharpened.

“I didn’t accuse you of hurting her.”

Vivian realized her mistake.

So did everyone else.

Then the digital recorder beeped.

Sophie had pressed a button.

Eleanor’s voice filled the room.

Soft.

Tired.

Alive again after two years.

“October seventeenth. Miles came to the house again. Vivian was with him. They are desperate for the copies.”

Julian gripped the edge of the desk.

The recording continued.

“If Rosa disappears, I’ll know they found out she helped me.”

Anna covered her mouth.

Then Eleanor said something that made Vivian run.

“If anything happens to me, Julian needs to look at the crash report himself. Especially the service record on my car.”

Vivian turned and sprinted toward the hallway.

Thomas reacted instantly.

“Stop!”

Security blocked the staircase.

Vivian screamed, “You don’t understand!”

Julian followed.

“What don’t I understand?”

She spun toward him.

Tears streaked her perfect makeup.

“Miles said he only wanted to scare Eleanor!”

Julian stopped.

Anna stopped.

Even Vivian seemed horrified by the words that had escaped her.

Julian’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Scare her how?”

Vivian pressed both hands over her mouth.

Then every light in West House went out.

Darkness swallowed the corridor.

Sophie screamed.

A crash came from downstairs.

Thomas shouted for security.

Anna reached for Sophie.

But Sophie was no longer beside her.

“Sophie?”

No answer.

“SOPHIE!”

Emergency lights flickered on.

The hallway was empty.

And from the open service door below came the sound of a car engine racing away.
