Chapter 8 - THE ENGAGEMENT WAS A TRAPThe recording began with the sound of ice dropping into a glass.

She was forty-two, composed, brilliant, and usually impossible to read.

Not tonight.

Tonight her face was wet with tears.

For six years, Rebecca had sat beside Adrian in board meetings.

She had negotiated acquisitions.

Protected the company during a recession.

Celebrated record profits.

And never once had Adrian known that his father was responsible for her father’s death.

Rebecca looked at Elena first.

Then the blue ledger on the table.

“That’s it?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

Rebecca walked toward it.

Marcus shifted instinctively.

Adrian raised a hand.

Let her.

Rebecca opened the book.

Adrian watched her read the page documenting Thomas Avery’s death.

Her hand began trembling.

“My mother told me he drowned.”

“I’m sorry.”

Rebecca looked at him sharply.

“You’re sorry?”

Adrian accepted the anger.

“Yes.”

“Your family paid people to call my father’s murder an accident.”

“Yes.”

“You inherited billions.”

“Yes.”

“My mother worked double shifts in a hospital laundry.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“I didn’t know.”

“Does that make it better?”

“No.”

The answer surprised her.

Adrian continued.

“Nothing I say makes it better.”

Rebecca looked at Elena.

“You saw him die?”

Elena nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”

“I tried.”

“Not hard enough.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Elena stopped him with one look.

She would answer for herself.

“You’re right,” Elena said.

Rebecca blinked.

“I was twenty-six. I had a baby. Charles controlled the police, lawyers, money, everything around me.”

Her voice trembled.

“But your father deserved someone who kept fighting no matter what it cost.”

Rebecca’s anger softened for a fraction.

“I failed him.”

“No.”

Adrian interrupted.

“You were threatened.”

Elena shook her head.

“Both things can be true.”

Rebecca stared at her.

Elena continued.

“I was a victim, Rebecca. But your father was still left without justice. I can’t ask you to pretend that doesn’t hurt.”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“My mother died believing he made a stupid mistake.”

Elena stepped closer.

“She deserved the truth too.”

For several seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then Rebecca looked at Adrian.

“What are you going to do?”

“Turn everything over to federal investigators.”

Rebecca laughed once.

“You’ll destroy Whitmore Holdings.”

“Maybe.”

“Thousands of people work for us.”

“I know.”

“Pensions. Families. Projects.”

“I know.”

“And if the company collapses?”

“Then we separate what my father did from what those employees earned.”

“How?”

“We cooperate completely. Establish an independent trust. Repay every dollar stolen from the pension funds plus interest. Remove every director connected to the cover-up.”

Rebecca studied him.

“Victoria will fight you.”

“She already has.”

“Your board will fight you.”

“Then they can explain publicly why they oppose restitution.”

Rebecca almost smiled.

Almost.

“You sound less like your father than I expected.”

“That’s the goal.”

Before anyone could respond, the mansion’s front doors opened.

Victoria entered with two attorneys.

“This meeting is over.”

Rebecca turned.

Victoria’s face was calm again.

“Rebecca, I understand you’re upset.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“You called me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make sure Adrian understands the consequences of releasing that ledger.”

Adrian laughed.

“You thought Rebecca would stop me?”

“I thought she might be more rational than you.”

Rebecca closed the ledger.

“You told me Charles killed my father because you wanted to use my grief against Adrian?”

Victoria’s confidence faltered.

“I wanted you to understand—”

Rebecca walked forward and slapped her.

The sound echoed through the room.

Nobody moved.

Rebecca’s voice remained quiet.

“You knew for thirty-six years.”

Victoria touched her cheek.

“Your father threatened thousands of jobs.”

“My father was trying to protect those workers!”

Victoria’s eyes hardened.

“You are emotional.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“You always use that word when a woman refuses to obey you.”

Elena looked at Victoria.

The observation landed.

Victoria shifted tactics.

“Adrian, the board has called an emergency meeting tomorrow.”

“Good.”

“They intend to remove you as CEO.”

Adrian was silent.

Victoria smiled slightly.

“You control twenty-three percent of voting shares. I control nineteen. The remaining directors can remove you.”

“Why would they?”

“Because I told them you intend to hand federal prosecutors evidence that could expose Whitmore Holdings to catastrophic liability.”

Rebecca turned to Adrian.

“She’s right. They could suspend you.”

Victoria continued.

“Give me the ledger.”

“No.”

“I can protect the company.”

“You mean bury the evidence.”

“I mean contain the damage.”

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“The Whitmore definition of protection.”

Adrian walked toward her.

“My father protected me by stealing my mother.”

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

“You protected the family by covering up a death.”

“Adrian—”

“No more.”

He picked up the ledger.

“Tomorrow I’m telling the board everything.”

Victoria looked at Elena.

“This is what you wanted?”

Elena answered calmly.

“I wanted my son to know the truth.”

“You’ve poisoned him against his family.”

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“She is my family.”

Elena’s eyes filled instantly.

Adrian realized what he had said.

So did everyone else.

He did not take it back.

Victoria looked suddenly old.

“You’ll regret this.”

“No.”

“You think morality will save you when banks freeze credit and employees panic?”

“I’ll handle it.”

“You can’t.”

Rebecca stepped beside Adrian.

“He won’t handle it alone.”

Victoria looked at her.

Rebecca continued.

“As CFO, I can structure a restitution reserve without destroying operating companies.”

Victoria stared.

“You would help him?”

“My father died trying to protect employees from theft. I won’t honor him by destroying their jobs.”

Victoria’s mouth tightened.

Then Vanessa appeared at the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Adrian’s expression became guarded.

Vanessa walked inside carrying a small flash drive.

“I’m sorry to interrupt.”

Victoria looked furious.

“What are you doing here?”

Vanessa held up the drive.

“Ending something.”

Adrian did not move.

“What is it?”

“My father kept copies of everything.”

“Everything?”

“Payments. Surveillance. Recordings.”

Elena’s face paled.

Vanessa nodded.

“Including videos from 1998.”

Adrian’s stomach tightened.

“Videos of what?”

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“The place where they held her.”

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

Adrian immediately faced Vanessa.

“Don’t.”

“I won’t show it unless she wants.”

Elena’s breathing became shallow.

Vanessa lowered the drive.

“But there’s another file you need.”

“What?”

“A recording made six months ago.”

Adrian frowned.

“My father and Victoria.”

Victoria’s face changed.

Vanessa noticed.

“So it’s real.”

Victoria stepped toward her.

“Give me that drive.”

Vanessa backed away.

“No.”

“You stupid little girl.”

Vanessa looked at her without flinching.

“You sound like my father.”

Victoria stopped.

Vanessa handed the drive to Adrian.

“I haven’t listened to all of it.”

“What did you hear?”

Her eyes met his.

“Enough to know Elena’s kidnapping wasn’t a panic reaction.”

Adrian felt cold.

“It was planned?”

“Before our engagement party.”

“How long before?”

“Six months.”

Elena stared at Victoria.

Vanessa continued.

“And according to the recording, kidnapping Elena wasn’t their final plan.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What was?”

May you like

Vanessa swallowed.

“They planned to make her disappear permanently after our wedding.”
