Chapter 9 - The Last TraitorAgent Mason vanished for eleven hours.

According to Sofia, Matteo Moretti had quietly moved portions of the family's legitimate holdings into a trust shortly before his death.
The beneficiary was Sofia.
And if Sofia was dead, Elena.
Hotels.
Warehouses.
Shipping interests.
Real estate.
Potentially hundreds of millions of dollars.
Elena listened for five minutes.
Then she said, “I don't want it.”
Everyone stared.
Adrian almost smiled.
Sofia did.
“You really are my daughter.”
Walsh wasn't amused.
“Unfortunately, whether you want it isn't the issue. Dominic believes control of those assets gives him leverage.”
“Then give them to him.”
Adrian shook his head.
“He won't stop.”
“Why?”
“Because this isn't about money.”
Sofia answered.
“It's about humiliation.”
Dominic believed the family had stolen his life.
Money only represented victory.
The real goal was to erase everyone connected to Matteo.
Including Adrian.
Including Lily.
Including Elena.
They traveled to Lake Mercer the following morning under federal protection.
The Moretti summer house had burned sixteen years earlier.
Only the stone foundation remained.
Nearby stood an abandoned boathouse.
Sofia led them inside.
“Marco loved fishing.”
She touched a rotted wooden beam.
“He hid things beneath the floor.”
Adrian found the loose boards.
Inside a metal case lay the Black Ledger.
After two decades of lies, the truth fit inside something smaller than a shoebox.
Walsh opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Photographs.
Recorded statements on microcassettes.
And one handwritten confession from Matteo.
Adrian read it.
His face changed.
“What?”
He handed the page to Elena.
Matteo admitted helping cover up Marco's death.
He also admitted something else.
For decades, he and Dominic had built the family's criminal network together.
Matteo wasn't innocent.
Adrian's father had simply regretted it later.
Elena watched Adrian absorb that.
“You didn't know?”
“No.”
For someone who had spent his life appearing immovable, Adrian suddenly looked tired.
“My father told me he was trying to clean things up before he died.”
“He was,” Sofia said.
“That doesn't erase what came before.”
“No.”
Elena touched Adrian's arm.
He looked at her hand.
She almost withdrew it.
He covered it with his own.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Touching.”
Dominic.
He stood at the boathouse entrance holding a gun.
How he had bypassed federal security became clear immediately.
Agent Mason, one of Walsh's own men, stood beside him.
Corrupt.
Walsh swore.
Dominic smiled.
“Every institution has a price.”
He ordered them inside.
Gunmen appeared from the trees.
Adrian shifted toward Lily.
Dominic noticed.
“Always the protective father.”
“Let the child go.”
“She is the reason you're predictable.”
“And Elena?”
Dominic looked at his granddaughter.
“She is the reason I'm disappointed.”
Sofia stepped between them.
“You ruined enough lives.”
“I created yours.”
“You controlled mine.”
“I loved you!”
“No.”
Sofia's voice broke.
“You loved obedience.”
Dominic flinched.
Elena saw something she'd never expected.
He was hurt.
Not redeemed.
Not innocent.
But human enough to be wounded by truth.
Sometimes monsters were more frightening because they were human.
Dominic pointed toward the ledger.
“Burn it.”
Sofia shook her head.
“Dad—”
“Burn it.”
“No.”
He aimed at Elena.
Sofia immediately grabbed the ledger.
“Fine.”
Adrian looked at Elena.
Their eyes met.
He subtly moved one finger.
Wait.
Sofia carried the ledger toward an old metal stove.
Dominic watched her.
Walsh watched Agent Mason.
Elena watched Lily.
The little girl was holding something behind her back.
A phone.
She had taken it from Rosa's pocket.
Elena almost smiled.
Smart kid.
Sofia stopped.
“I spent my whole life afraid of you.”
Dominic's jaw tightened.
“Put it in the fire.”
“I won't.”
Dominic raised his gun.
Adrian moved.
Everything happened at once.
Walsh struck Mason.
Rosa pulled Lily down.
Elena kicked a loose board into one gunman's knees.
Adrian tackled Dominic.
A shot fired.
Sofia screamed.
Adrian and Dominic crashed through the rotten railing onto the frozen edge of the lake.
The ice cracked.
Elena ran.
“Adrian!”
Dominic pulled a knife.
Adrian caught his wrist.
They struggled.
The ice fractured beneath them.
Elena grabbed a rope from the boathouse wall.
Another crack.
Dominic fell through.
Adrian caught the edge.
Elena threw the rope.
“Grab it!”
Adrian did.
Dominic surfaced beside him.
“Help me!”
Adrian looked at him.
For one terrible second, Elena wondered what he would choose.
Revenge would be easy.
Nobody would blame him.
Dominic had kidnapped his daughter.
Threatened his family.
Destroyed lives.
Adrian reached down.
And grabbed his uncle's hand.
Dominic stared at him in disbelief.
“Why?”
Adrian pulled.
“Because Lily is watching.”
That was the moment Sofia's condition was fulfilled.
Adrian chose his daughter over the Moretti legacy.
Federal agents arrested Dominic the moment he reached shore.
He looked at Elena as they led him away.
“All of this was meant to be yours.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward Lily.
“That's exactly why it never will be.”
But the crisis wasn't over.

Because while everyone focused on Dominic, corrupt Agent Mason disappeared.
And he took the Black Ledger with him.
