Chapter 2 - THE WIFE WHO NEVER SAID YESEmily woke to the sound of rain.

The ballroom had become a blur of shattered crystal, overturned tables, and people crawling beneath white linen while gunfire tore through one of Manhattan’s most exclusive charity galas.
Three minutes earlier, Emily had been carrying champagne.
Now she was dying on a marble floor.
She had never met the man kneeling beside her.
She only knew someone had tried to kill him.
And for reasons she could not explain, she had stepped between him and the gun.
“Stay with me.”
The stranger’s voice sounded distant.
Emily tried to focus on his face.
Dark hair. Expensive black tuxedo. Blood on his collar that did not belong to him.
Cold gray eyes that suddenly looked anything but cold.
“Why…” Emily whispered.
Blood filled her mouth.
The man pressed both hands against the wound beneath her ribs.
“Don’t talk.”
Emily almost laughed.
Waitresses were supposed to obey wealthy guests.
Apparently even while dying.
Across the ballroom, armed security men were shouting orders.
“East doors secure!”
“Shooter down!”
“Second shooter unaccounted for!”
Emily’s eyelids fluttered.
She remembered seeing the weapon.
A man dressed as catering staff had reached beneath his jacket.
The stranger had been standing with his back toward him.
Emily had seen the gun rise.
She could have run.
Instead, she had thrown herself forward.
The first bullet struck her shoulder.
The next two entered her side.
Then everything had happened too quickly.
The stranger had caught her before she hit the floor.
More bullets came.
He dragged her behind an overturned banquet table while his security team fired back.
Yet somehow Emily had been hit four more times.
Seven.
She had counted because counting kept her conscious.
One in the shoulder.
Two in her abdomen.
One through her upper arm.
One across her ribs.
Two somewhere she could no longer feel.
“Sir, we have to move you!”
A security guard grabbed the stranger’s shoulder.
He did not move.
“Mr. Vale!”
That name reached Emily through the darkness.
Vale.
Adrian Vale.
She knew the name.
Everyone in New York knew it.
Real estate.
Nightclubs.
Shipping.
Construction.
And rumors whispered in restaurant kitchens whenever men in dark suits entered through private doors.
Adrian Vale was officially a billionaire businessman.
Unofficially?
People said half the city’s criminals feared him.
Emily stared weakly at him.
“Oh,” she breathed.
Adrian leaned closer.
“What?”
“You’re… him.”
For the first time that evening, something almost like amusement crossed his face.
“Apparently.”
“You’re terrible at… choosing parties.”
Then her eyes closed.
“Emily.”
Her eyes reopened.
She froze.
“How do you know my name?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Only for half a second.
But she saw it.
He had known her name before looking at her employee badge.
Before she had spoken.
Before she had saved him.
That terrified her more than the bullets.
“How…” she whispered again.
A paramedic dropped beside her.
“We have massive blood loss!”
Another paramedic cut open her uniform.
Adrian finally released her only when they pushed him away.
“BP sixty over thirty.”
“Possible collapsed lung.”
“Get two large-bore IVs.”
“She needs surgery now.”
Emily was lifted onto a stretcher.
As they rushed toward the service hallway, her fingers slipped from Adrian’s hand.
For reasons she would never understand, he followed.
At 1:47 a.m., surgeons at St. Matthew’s Medical Center were still fighting to keep Emily alive.
Seven bullets.
Four surgeries scheduled.
Severe internal bleeding.
A damaged lung.
A shattered collarbone.
And enough blood loss that one trauma surgeon quietly told Adrian that survival was uncertain.
Adrian stood outside the operating room without removing his bloodstained tuxedo jacket.
Twelve armed men now controlled the hospital corridor.
Nobody questioned them.
Nobody wanted to.
His closest lieutenant, Gabriel Knox, approached.
“We identified the dead shooter.”
Adrian did not turn.
“Name.”
“Louis Ferra.”
That got his attention.
Adrian slowly looked over.
“The Ferra family?”
Gabriel nodded.
“And there’s more.”
He handed Adrian a phone.
Security footage appeared.
The shooter entering the ballroom.
Emily serving champagne.
Then another image.
Emily’s employee file.
Full name:
EMILY ROSE CARTER.
Date of birth.
Cleveland, Ohio.
Mother deceased.
Father listed as unknown.
Adrian stared at the screen for a long time.
Gabriel lowered his voice.
“You were right.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“The DNA?”
“Preliminary result came back ninety minutes ago.”
“And?”
Gabriel hesitated.
“Emily Carter is Helena Vale’s daughter.”
For the first time in years, Adrian looked shaken.
Helena.
His older sister.
The sister who had disappeared twenty-seven years ago.
The sister their father claimed had died.
The sister whose body had never been recovered.
Gabriel continued.
“If the Ferras know who Emily really is…”
“They do.”
Adrian looked toward the operating-room doors.
“That shooting wasn’t only about me.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“You think they were trying to kill both of you?”
“I think Emily stepped into bullets that were already meant to reach her.”
A surgeon emerged.
Adrian approached immediately.
“She survived the first operation.”
The tension in Adrian’s shoulders loosened slightly.
“But?”
“She’s unstable. Very unstable. We need consent for another procedure.”
“I authorize it.”
The surgeon frowned.
“You aren’t family.”
Adrian stared through the glass at Emily’s unconscious figure.
Twenty-seven years.
His sister’s child had been alive all this time.
And now the same families that had destroyed Helena were coming for her daughter.
Family.
That word suddenly carried a different meaning.
Adrian removed a gold ring from his little finger.
It had belonged to his grandmother.
The last woman who had kept the Vale family together before blood and money destroyed it.
He turned to Gabriel.
“Get Father Michael.”
Gabriel stared at him.
“You cannot be serious.”
“Get him.”
“Adrian—”
“If Emily wakes without Vale protection, the Ferras will try again.”
“You could publicly announce she’s your niece.”
“And paint a target on her before we know who else is involved?”
Adrian looked at the unconscious woman through the glass.
“No.”
Gabriel understood.
Marriage created immediate legal access.
Immediate protection.
Immediate control over who entered her room.
And more importantly, in their world, attacking the wife of Adrian Vale meant declaring war.
Twenty-two minutes later, under emergency legal arrangements prepared by one of Adrian’s attorneys and witnessed by hospital staff who barely understood what was happening, Adrian stood beside Emily’s bed.
She was unconscious.
Pale.
Connected to machines.
Alive only because strangers had filled her veins with donated blood.
Adrian slipped the gold ring onto her finger.
Then he bent close enough that only she could have heard him if consciousness still remained somewhere inside her.
“You saved my life without knowing who I was.”
His voice became colder.
“So now I’m going to save yours before you discover who you are.”
Outside the ICU, Gabriel received another message.
He read it once.
Then again.
His face went white.
Adrian noticed.
“What?”
Gabriel handed him the phone.
Only six words appeared on the screen.
HELENA CARTER IS STILL ALIVE.
Adrian stared at them.
May you like
Then the monitor beside Emily suddenly began screaming.
And every doctor in the room started running.
