Chapter 11 - THIS TIME HE TOOK THE BULLETAdrian heard the gunshot.

The door was open.
The bed was empty.
So was Vivienne.
His face became terrifying.
“MOTHER!”
Sarah ran behind him.
Rosa emerged from another corridor.
“What happened?”
“Where is Ethan?”
“With Mrs. Vale.”
“Where?”
“She said she was taking him to the greenhouse.”
Adrian was already moving.
Security surrounded the greenhouse.
Inside, Ethan sat at a table painting a flowerpot.
Vivienne drank tea beside him.
Adrian entered with his gun drawn.
His mother looked up.
“What on earth?”
“Step away from Ethan.”
Vivienne froze.
“Adrian.”
“Now.”
Ethan looked frightened.
“Daddy?”
Sarah hurried toward him.
“Come with me, buddy.”
Vivienne stood.
“What happened?”
Adrian showed her the photograph.
Her expression changed.
“That's my car.”
“I know.”
“I haven't used it in three days.”
“Who has?”
“My driver.”
“Name.”
“Peter Lang.”
Mason spoke from behind Adrian.
“Lang didn't report today.”
Vivienne went pale.
Adrian lowered the gun slightly.
“Where does he live?”
Queens.
They arrived too late.
Peter Lang's apartment had been emptied.
No clothes.
No photographs.
No computer.
Nothing except one envelope lying deliberately on the kitchen counter.
Inside was a photograph of Vivienne entering a bank.
Dated two weeks earlier.
Adrian looked at his mother.
“What bank?”
Vivienne sighed.
“The ledger vault.”
“Why were you there?”
“To move it.”
“Without telling me?”
“Yes.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“This family desperately needs a group chat.”
Nobody laughed.
Vivienne continued.
“I received a threat.”
“What kind?”
“Someone knew the vault number.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was trying to protect—”
“Don't.”
Adrian's voice cracked.
“Never say that word to me again when you mean lie.”
Vivienne's eyes filled.
“I deserved that.”
“Where is the ledger?”
“A different vault.”
“Who knows where?”
“Only me.”
A phone rang.
Vivienne's.
Unknown number.
Adrian answered.
A man's voice said, “Bring Vivienne Vale and the ledger to Pier 19 tonight.”
“Who is this?”
“You've spent days looking backward, Adrian.”
A pause.
“You should have looked upward.”
The call ended.
Sarah frowned.
“Upward?”
Mason looked at Adrian.
“Someone above you in the legitimate company.”
Adrian slowly turned.
There was only one person above the CEO in Vale International's corporate structure.
The chairman of the board.
Charles Whitmore.
Adrian's godfather.
His father's closest friend.
The man who had helped raise him.
By dusk, evidence began unraveling everything.
Whitmore controlled shell corporations connected to the stolen charity funds.
His private security company had provided contractors to the Grand Marlowe.
Richard Bell had worked for him.
Peter Lang's bank account had received money from one of Whitmore's subsidiaries.
Julian had believed he was dismantling Adrian.
In reality, Whitmore had been manipulating both brothers.
“He wants the ledger destroyed,” Sarah said.
Adrian nodded.
“It contains evidence against him.”
“And he used Julian's return as cover.”
“Yes.”
Vivienne sat silently.
“This began with your father.”
Adrian looked at her.
She swallowed.
“Charles managed the foundation finances. Your father discovered money missing.”
“Then why did Father blame Julian?”
“Because Charles convinced him Julian was responsible.”
Julian, his shoulder bandaged, sat across the room.
“I told you.”
Adrian glanced at him.
“Try enjoying this less.”
“I've waited fifteen years.”
“You kidnapped my child.”
“That remains regrettable.”
Sarah stared.
“Regrettable?”
Julian looked at her.
“I am working on accountability.”
“You're terrible at it.”
“Runs in the family.”
Adrian almost smiled.
Then his face hardened.
“We're ending this.”
At 11 p.m., Vivienne drove toward Pier 19 with a case containing what appeared to be the Black Ledger.
Adrian's men followed discreetly.
Police units remained outside the perimeter.
Julian insisted on coming.
Adrian refused.
Julian came anyway.
Sarah was ordered to remain behind.
Again.
She ignored him.
Again.
“Do you ever listen?”
Adrian demanded when he found her inside Mason's vehicle.
“Frequently.”
“To me?”
“Almost never.”
“This is dangerous.”
“You keep saying that as though the last month hasn't established a pattern.”
“Sarah.”
She touched his face.
His anger disappeared.
“Bring your mother home.”
He stared at her.
“I intend to.”
“And yourself.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He kissed her.
This time there was no hesitation.
No accident.
No fear disguised as strategy.
When they separated, Adrian rested his forehead against hers.
“If we survive this…”
“When.”
His mouth twitched.
“When we survive this, I need to ask you something.”
“If it's another fake marriage announcement, workshop it first.”
He smiled.
A real smile.
Then left.
Pier 19 was nearly abandoned.
Vivienne stood beneath a warehouse light with the case.
Charles Whitmore emerged from the darkness.
Seventy years old.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
He looked like someone's distinguished grandfather.
Not the architect of fifteen years of blood.
“Vivienne.”
“Charles.”
“Where's Adrian?”
“Not here.”
Whitmore smiled.
“Lying never suited you.”
Armed men appeared.
Adrian stepped from cover.
Neither man looked surprised.
“Godson.”
“Don't call me that.”
“What an ugly way to greet family.”
“You aren't family.”
Whitmore sighed.
“Your father said the same thing near the end.”
Adrian froze.
“You killed him?”
Whitmore smiled.
“Eventually, cancer did.”
“But you helped?”
“I helped him become sick enough that cancer had assistance.”
Julian stepped from another direction.
Whitmore laughed.
“Both brothers. How sentimental.”
Adrian's men appeared.
Weapons rose.
Whitmore's men raised theirs.
A stalemate.
Then Whitmore looked toward Sarah's vehicle.
And smiled.
“Unfortunately, I brought insurance.”
Sarah heard a click behind her.
Peter Lang pressed a gun against her neck.
“Out.”
Her stomach dropped.
He had been hiding inside Mason's vehicle.
Sarah stepped into the light.
Adrian's face changed instantly.
Whitmore smiled.
“There she is.”
“Let her go.”
“You've become predictable, Adrian.”
“Take me.”
“I already tried killing you.”
Whitmore gestured toward Sarah.
“Apparently emotional attachment does the job better.”
Peter forced Sarah forward.
Adrian lowered his gun.
“Don't,” Sarah said.
Whitmore smiled.
“Yes, Adrian.”
He held out his hand.
“The ledger.”
Vivienne looked at Adrian.
Sarah saw everything happening at once.
The fear.
The calculation.
The impossible choice.
Then Ethan's words seemed to echo in her head.
Daddy doesn't panic.
Sarah looked at Adrian.
He looked back.
She smiled.
Just slightly.
Trust me.
Then Sarah stomped backward onto Peter Lang's foot and slammed her head into his nose.
The gun fired.
May you like
Chaos erupted.
And Sarah fell.
