Chapter 7 - The Groom’s ChoiceVanessa vanished from a guarded hospital room just before sunrise.

When Ethan played the recording, he simply closed his eyes.

“Yes,” he said.

Margaret stepped away from him.

Samuel looked ready to kill him.

Ethan stared at the man who had protected him since his twenties.

“You were with my father the night he died.”

“Yes.”

“You told me you were called away.”

“I lied.”

Samuel lunged.

Ethan caught him.

“Let him talk.”

Marcus slowly removed his pistol and placed it on the table.

“I drove Charles that night.”

“Then why was he found alone?”

“Because he ordered me out of the car.”

Marcus explained that Charles had received a call from Robert asking to meet at an unfinished development outside Chicago.

Charles knew it might be dangerous.

Marcus insisted on driving.

On the way, Charles received another call.

His face changed.

He told Marcus to stop.

“He said they had Margaret.”

Margaret stared.

“What?”

“They sent him a photograph of you leaving a restaurant.”

Margaret remembered that evening.

She had no idea anyone had been following her.

Charles believed Sterling would kill her if Marcus stayed with him.

“So he made me get out.”

“You obeyed?”

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“I was twenty-nine. Your father was screaming at me that my presence could kill his wife.”

“What happened next?”

“I called Samuel.”

Samuel frowned.

“My phone was disconnected that night.”

Marcus looked at him.

“I know that now.”

Charles drove alone.

Two hours later, his car went off a bridge.

Marcus arrived before police.

He saw Robert’s vehicle leaving the area.

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I did.”

“To whom?”

“Detective Paul Brenner.”

Margaret’s face went cold.

Brenner had led the investigation into Charles’s death.

“He told me Robert was home all night. He told me there was no evidence of sabotage. Then the next morning, two federal agents arrived.”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“They showed me financial records proving Charles had transferred money illegally. They said if I challenged the accident ruling, they would destroy the company and arrest Margaret as a co-conspirator.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“And you believed them?”

“I was stupid.”

“You were scared.”

“Yes.”

“Same difference tonight.”

Marcus accepted that.

For nine years he remained close to Ethan, secretly gathering evidence.

He never found enough.

Until now.

Samuel looked at him.

“You should’ve come to me.”

“I thought you were gone.”

“You could have looked.”

“I did. Someone erased you.”

The two men fell silent.

Sterling had spent decades making allies distrust one another.

That was its greatest weapon.

Not money.

Isolation.

The DNA results arrived the next morning.

Evelyn was not Charles Caldwell’s biological daughter.

She was Thomas Reed’s daughter.

Samuel sat beside her for an hour without speaking.

He had discovered a niece he never knew existed.

Evelyn did not care that Charles wasn’t biologically her father.

“He came looking for me,” she said. “He chose me.”

Ethan agreed.

That made them family enough.

But legally, the result changed everything.

Evelyn had no claim against the Caldwell estate.

Sterling’s entire plan had been built on false information.

When Vanessa heard, she laughed from her hospital bed.

“My mother destroyed lives over a DNA test she never bothered to take.”

Ethan looked at her.

“She still has the twins.”

The laughter disappeared.

“We need to get them back.”

Linda wanted the flash drive.

That gave them leverage.

Ethan agreed to the exchange.

Against police advice, he would appear alone.

But only appear.

Marcus embedded a tracker in Ethan’s watch.

Samuel placed a second transmitter inside the flash drive casing.

Margaret insisted on joining the operation.

Ethan refused.

She stared at him.

“I pretended to be helpless for fourteen months. I am finished being protected by being excluded.”

He knew he would lose the argument.

The exchange location was an abandoned equestrian estate outside Albany.

Ethan drove through the gates at midnight.

Alone.

Linda waited inside the stable.

Beside her stood Vanessa’s uncle, Adrian Hartwell.

Two armed men guarded Sophie and Grace.

The twins looked terrified but unharmed.

Linda smiled.

“My son-in-law.”

“Not for long.”

“Vanessa always did choose emotion over discipline.”

“You shot her?”

“Robert did.”

“You ordered him to.”

Linda’s smile faded.

“The drive.”

Ethan held it up.

“Girls first.”

Linda laughed.

“You’re bargaining because you think the police are listening.”

Ethan’s blood went cold.

Linda raised a small device.

“Signal jammer.”

Outside the estate, Marcus lost contact instantly.

Linda stepped closer.

“I built financial networks before you learned multiplication, Ethan.”

“You also raised your daughter to fear you.”

“I raised her to survive.”

“You don’t know what that word means.”

Linda’s eyes hardened.

“Your father said similar things.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You killed him.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Ethan waited.

Linda smiled again.

“Robert did.”

One of the twins gasped.

Linda continued.

“Charles was becoming sentimental. He wanted confession and redemption. Robert wanted preservation.”

“So Robert sabotaged the car?”

“No.”

Linda looked almost amused.

“He shot Charles before the car entered the water.”

Ethan’s breath stopped.

Police reports said Charles drowned.

“Brenner altered the autopsy.”

Everything fit.

Corrupt officers.

False reports.

Stolen records.

Linda held out her hand.

“The drive.”

Ethan tossed it toward the dirt.

One guard retrieved it.

Linda inserted it into a laptop.

“Password?”

“WATCHING.”

She opened it.

Then frowned.

The folders began disappearing.

Ethan smiled.

“What did you do?”

“Marcus improved Dad’s security.”

A timer appeared.

REMOTE DUPLICATION COMPLETE.

Linda screamed.

The flash drive had transmitted its contents the instant her jammer weakened enough to connect to the estate’s internal network.

Every Sterling file was being uploaded to multiple news organizations, federal investigators, and attorneys.

Linda pulled a gun.

“You idiot.”

“Maybe.”

“You just destroyed hundreds of people.”

“No. They did that themselves.”

She raised the weapon.

Then a voice came from behind her.

“Mom.”

Vanessa stood in the stable doorway.

Her shoulder was bandaged.

Ethan stared.

“You’re supposed to be in police custody.”

“I had a persuasive attorney.”

Linda looked stunned.

“You came here?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved to the twins.

“They’re family.”

“You were supposed to control Ethan.”

“I tried.”

“You failed.”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“I stopped trying.”

Linda fired.

Ethan tackled Vanessa.

The bullet missed.

Then lights exploded across the estate.

FBI vehicles smashed through the gates.

Marcus’s voice came from outside.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapons!”

Samuel entered from the rear.

Margaret was beside him.

Standing.

Linda stared at the woman she had tried to cripple.

Margaret walked directly toward her.

“Remember me?”

Linda raised her gun.

Before she could fire, Grace kicked the back of Linda’s knee.

Sophie pulled the rope around her wrists tight against Linda’s ankle.

Linda crashed to the ground.

Margaret kicked the gun away.

Federal agents flooded the stable.

It was over.

Or so they believed.

Robert Caldwell disappeared from police custody six hours later.

May you like

And he took the one person who could still destroy Ethan with him.

Vanessa.
