Chapter 3 - The Sister Who Came HomeIsabella Moretti arrived from Milan the next morning wearing black.

She always wore black.

After their mother died, she claimed colors felt dishonest.

Alejandro watched from the top of the staircase as his younger sister entered the house, removed her sunglasses, and ran toward him.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

“I heard you almost died.”

Her voice broke.

Alejandro closed his eyes.

He wanted to believe the grief in her voice.

He wanted Daniel Carter’s recording to be wrong.

He wanted the camera footage of Sebastian to be some elaborate misunderstanding.

Most of all, he wanted his family back.

Instead, he kissed Isabella’s forehead and lied.

“It was an accident.”

Isabella stepped back.

“An accident?”

“Kitchen contamination.”

Her shoulders relaxed almost imperceptibly.

Alejandro noticed.

Before yesterday, he would not have.

“You should replace everyone,” she said.

“I’ll consider it.”

She glanced toward the study.

“And Sebastian?”

“What about him?”

“He called me. He’s furious.”

“About my allergy?”

“About your security.”

Alejandro smiled faintly.

“He worries.”

“He loves you.”

The words landed like glass.

Later that day, Elena sat in the staff kitchen staring at a photograph of Daniel on her phone.

For seven months she had believed her husband died because a truck crossed the centerline during a storm.

Police said the crash was immediate.

Closed casket.

Identification made through dental records.

She had never questioned it.

Why would she?

Daniel had been careful.

Ordinary.

He complained about grocery prices and baseball scores.

He forgot anniversaries.

He made terrible pancakes every Sunday morning.

He had never once told her he was investigating powerful criminals.

Now every memory felt altered.

Sophie colored beside her.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Why are you sad?”

Elena forced a smile.

“I miss Daddy.”

Sophie nodded.

“I miss Daddy too.”

She drew a yellow circle.

“Daddy liked the moon.”

Elena froze.

“What did you say?”

“Daddy liked the moon.”

Sophie pointed at her rabbit.

“He said Mr. Buttons knows moon secrets.”

Elena stared.

“When did Daddy say that?”

“Before he went away.”

“Do you remember anything else?”

Sophie scrunched her face.

“He said if Mommy gets scared, follow the rabbit.”

Elena stood abruptly.

She took the stuffed toy.

The seam had already been opened where Alejandro found the USB.

But she felt along the rabbit’s body.

Nothing.

Then she pressed one floppy ear.

Something crackled.

She tore a few stitches carefully.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

A handwritten address.

NEWARK STORAGE — UNIT 314.

Below it:

Elena only.

Her heart hammered.

She folded the paper quickly.

A shadow appeared in the kitchen doorway.

Isabella.

“What did you find?”

Elena spun around.

“Nothing.”

Isabella smiled.

They had never met.

Yet Isabella looked at Elena as if she already knew exactly who she was.

“You’re the maid whose daughter saved my brother.”

“Elena Carter.”

“I know.”

The way she said it chilled Elena.

Isabella walked inside and crouched beside Sophie.

“And you must be the little hero.”

Sophie hid behind her mother’s hip.

Isabella reached toward her.

Sophie stepped backward.

“Don’t.”

Elena touched her shoulder.

“Sophie.”

But Sophie was staring at Isabella’s wrist.

A silver bracelet circled it.

Small crescent moons hung from the chain.

Sophie pointed.

“Daddy had that.”

Silence.

Isabella slowly stood.

“What?”

“My daddy had one.”

Elena stared at the bracelet.

Daniel had indeed owned a crescent-moon keychain during the final months of his life.

He claimed it was promotional merchandise from work.

Isabella laughed lightly.

“Many people own moon charms.”

She walked toward the door.

Then turned.

“Children remember strange things.”

After she left, Elena immediately found Marcus.

“I need to go somewhere.”

“No.”

“You don’t even know where.”

“I know enough.”

“It’s something Daniel left.”

Marcus’s face hardened.

“That makes it dangerous.”

“It also belongs to me.”

Alejandro appeared behind him.

“Take her.”

Marcus turned.

Alejandro continued, “Two cars. Four men. Nobody knows where she’s going except you.”

Elena looked at him.

“I don’t need your permission.”

“No.”

Alejandro’s voice softened.

“But you need protection.”

Two hours later they arrived at Newark Storage.

Unit 314 had been prepaid for three years.

The lock opened with a small key Daniel had hidden inside the rabbit’s other ear.

Inside the unit stood three filing cabinets and a metal trunk.

Elena opened the trunk first.

There were photographs.

Sebastian meeting dock supervisors.

Isabella entering warehouses at night.

Bundles of counterfeit manifests.

Then Elena uncovered a child’s blue blanket.

She stared.

It was Sophie’s hospital blanket.

“What is that doing here?”

Marcus looked inside.

Beneath the blanket lay a sealed envelope.

Elena’s name was written across it.

She opened it.

Daniel’s handwriting filled three pages.

Elena,

There is something I should have told you before we married.

Something about Sophie.

Elena stopped breathing.

Marcus noticed.

“What?”

She kept reading.

The room tilted.

Daniel had discovered evidence that Sebastian was moving drugs through Moretti shipping routes without Alejandro’s knowledge.

Isabella managed the offshore accounts.

Daniel tried to collect enough proof to take directly to Alejandro.

But during the investigation, Daniel learned something else.

Something personal.

Something impossible.

He had run a DNA test.

Sophie was not his biological daughter.

Elena whispered, “No.”

Marcus moved closer.

She backed away.

Daniel’s letter continued.

I knew from the beginning she might not be mine.

You told me about the night before we met. You told me you had been drugged at a charity event and remembered almost nothing until waking in a hotel room.

I promised it didn’t matter.

But when I found a medical record while investigating Moretti’s finances, I recognized a date.

Elena’s hands shook violently.

Daniel had found a hospital payment authorized secretly four years earlier.

A payment for emergency medical treatment.

For Alejandro Moretti.

The charity gala.

The same night.

Elena looked at Marcus.

“What happened to Alejandro four years ago?”

Marcus frowned.

“He was attacked after a foundation fundraiser. Someone put something in his drink. He disappeared from the event for several hours.”

Elena couldn’t speak.

Daniel’s letter ended with one sentence.

If my suspicion is correct, Sophie’s biological father is Alejandro Moretti.

The storage facility lights suddenly went out.

Marcus reached for his gun.

“Down!”

A shot exploded through the darkness.

Elena screamed.

Another bullet struck the metal cabinet.

Marcus shoved her behind the trunk.

Men were moving outside the unit.

At least three.

Maybe four.

And one voice carried clearly through the darkness.

“Find the letter.”

Marcus fired toward the doorway.

Elena recognized the voice.

May you like

She had heard it that morning.

Isabella.
