Chapter 8 - The Wife Who Came Back from the DeadGabriel refused to open the door.

Every television station showed security footage from Pier Seventeen.

The footage had been edited.

It showed Gabriel arriving armed.

It showed him confronting police.

It showed him running.

It did not show Charles Vale holding Rosa hostage.

It did not show corrupt officers helping Charles escape.

The narrative was perfect.

Gabriel Vale had kidnapped a homeless child who had supposedly saved him from drowning.

Rosa Vega was portrayed as an unstable woman assisting him.

Aurelio watched from an abandoned farmhouse Simon owned outside the city.

“They’re lying.”

Rosa sat beside him.

“That’s what powerful people do when truth becomes dangerous.”

Aurelio looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me about Dad?”

Rosa closed her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.”

“You always told me fear shouldn’t make decisions.”

“I was better at giving advice than following it.”

Aurelio almost smiled.

Then his expression hardened.

“I thought he didn’t want me.”

Rosa’s face crumpled.

“He adored you.”

She opened an old wallet.

Inside was a photograph Aurelio had never seen.

Daniel Vale was asleep on a couch.

Baby Aurelio lay on his chest.

Daniel’s hand rested protectively across the infant’s back.

“He used to walk you around the apartment at three in the morning,” Rosa said. “You had terrible colic.”

Aurelio touched the photograph.

“What was he like?”

“Stubborn.”

Gabriel answered from behind them.

“Annoying.”

Rosa looked up.

Gabriel continued.

“He cheated at cards. Sang badly. Never remembered birthdays unless somebody reminded him. And he once broke my nose because I called his first girlfriend boring.”

Aurelio laughed.

It surprised everyone.

Gabriel sat down.

“But Daniel was the bravest person I knew.”

Aurelio studied him.

“Did he know he was going to die?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he stop?”

Gabriel looked toward Rosa.

She answered.

“Because people were dying.”

Meridian had moved weapons, trafficked vulnerable people, bribed port authorities, and financed violent organizations.

Daniel had found manifests proving it.

Walking away meant letting it continue.

Aurelio stared at his father’s photograph.

For years he had imagined a coward.

Instead his father had died because he refused to become one.

Simon entered carrying a laptop.

“We have a problem.”

Marcus sighed.

“Only one?”

“The files Gabriel uploaded are being called fabricated.”

Gabriel frowned.

“Digital signatures?”

“Meridian’s experts are claiming Daniel created fake documents before his death.”

Captain Ruiz joined them by encrypted video.

“We need something physical. Something they can’t dismiss.”

Rosa suddenly became very still.

“There is.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Daniel recorded his final meeting with Charles.”

Gabriel stood.

“What?”

“The night before Daniel died.”

“Where?”

Rosa looked at Aurelio.

“In his father’s grave.”

Silence.

Daniel and Gabriel’s father, Michael Vale, was buried at St. Matthew’s Cemetery.

Daniel had hidden an analog microcassette inside the hollow base of the family monument.

Digital files could be accused of manipulation.

An original twelve-year-old tape was harder to dismiss.

There was only one problem.

Police were watching the cemetery.

Gabriel smiled grimly.

“So we give them someone else to follow.”

That afternoon, reports surfaced that Gabriel had been seen heading north.

A vehicle matching his was deliberately spotted near Oregon.

Police resources shifted.

At 2:00 a.m., Rosa, Aurelio, Simon, and Marcus entered St. Matthew’s through a service gate.

Gabriel stayed away.

His face was too recognizable.

Rain began falling.

Aurelio followed Rosa between gravestones.

They reached a black granite monument.

MICHAEL AND ELEANOR VALE.

Rosa found a metal plate near the base.

Marcus pried it open.

Inside was a sealed plastic container.

The tape remained dry.

Simon stared.

“This could end them.”

A flashlight suddenly appeared behind them.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Marcus reached for his weapon.

“Don’t.”

Captain Ruiz stepped from the darkness.

Aurelio exhaled.

“You scared me.”

“Good. Means your survival instincts work.”

They brought the tape to a retired audio expert Ruiz trusted.

The recording crackled.

Then Daniel’s voice filled the small room.

“Charles, sit down.”

Aurelio froze.

Charles answered.

“You’re making a catastrophic mistake.”

“I copied everything.”

“You don’t understand what you’re interfering with.”

“I understand children disappear through our ports.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“I understand weapons are being shipped under humanitarian manifests.”

Charles’s voice lowered.

“Walk away.”

“No.”

“You have a son now.”

Rosa covered her mouth.

Daniel replied, “That’s why I can’t.”

Aurelio’s eyes filled.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

Charles said:

“Kane says the boy becomes leverage if you refuse.”

Everyone froze.

Senator Kane.

His voice wasn’t on the tape, but Charles named him directly.

Daniel responded.

“If anybody touches Aurelio, I burn Meridian to the ground.”

The tape continued.

Then footsteps.

A door.

A new voice entered.

A woman.

“Daniel?”

Gabriel, listening remotely, suddenly spoke through the laptop.

“No.”

Aurelio looked at the screen.

Gabriel’s face had gone white.

“You recognize her?”

Gabriel didn’t answer.

Rosa whispered the name.

“Victoria Vale.”

Aurelio knew it.

Gabriel’s wife.

The woman who had supposedly died of cancer eight years earlier.

Daniel’s recording had been made twelve years ago.

Victoria entered the conversation.

Charles said, “Tell him.”

Victoria’s voice became cold.

“Daniel, stop digging.”

Gabriel stared at the screen.

His dead wife had known about Meridian.

Worse—

She had been part of it.

Then the tape delivered the final blow.

Daniel said, “Does Gabriel know?”

Victoria answered.

“No.”

“And he never will.”

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Aurelio watched him experience the same devastation he had experienced days earlier.

The discovery that someone you loved had built your life on a lie.

Simon whispered, “We publish everything.”

Rosa shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Victoria might still be alive.”

Gabriel looked up sharply.

“She died in my arms.”

Rosa’s eyes filled with dread.

“No, Gabriel.”

She placed an old medical document on the table.

“I checked her hospital records after Daniel died.”

Gabriel stared at it.

“The woman you buried wasn’t Victoria.”

Aurelio felt cold.

Gabriel whispered, “Then who was she?”

Rosa answered.

“I don’t know.”

Outside, a vehicle pulled into the farmhouse driveway.

Marcus reached for his gun.

Headlights swept across the room.

A woman stepped from the car.

Gabriel saw her through the security camera.

His knees nearly gave out.

Older.

Different hair.

May you like

But unmistakable.

Victoria Vale was alive.
