Chapter 7 - WHAT THOMAS SAWThomas had been eleven.

For ten years, Valerie had thought of him as family.
He had attended Thomas’s birthdays.
Spent Thanksgiving at their home.
Sent Valerie flowers after her mother died.
He had once held Thomas’s bicycle seat while the boy learned to ride.
Now Detective Ruiz believed he had helped hide Melissa Hale.
Police brought Michael in before dawn.
He asked for an attorney.
Then he changed his mind when Ruiz showed him Paul Mercer’s letter.
Valerie was not allowed inside the interview room, but hours later Ruiz came out.
“He wants to talk to you.”
“Why?”
“He says he owes you.”
Valerie entered.
Michael looked twenty years older than the man she remembered.
His tie was gone.
His collar open.
Hands trembling.
“Val.”
“Don't call me that.”
He lowered his head.
“Fair.”
“Where is Melissa?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why am I here?”
“Because I helped her disappear.”
Valerie stared.
Michael explained.
He had known Daniel since law school.
At first, he admired him.
Daniel was ambitious, brilliant, fearless.
Then Rebecca died.
Michael suspected the truth.
But he did nothing.
Years later, he became financially entangled with Daniel.
Shell companies.
Questionable real estate deals.
Aggressive tenant removals.
Michael convinced himself they were technical violations.
Then Melissa overheard Daniel and Warren Pike discussing a building fire meant to force out remaining tenants.
“That fire killed someone,” Michael whispered.
Valerie felt cold.
“Daniel killed someone?”
“No. The fire was supposed to be contained.”
“That’s your defense?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“No.”
Melissa threatened to expose them.
Daniel ordered Pike to frighten her.
Michael found out after she vanished.
Three days later, Melissa called him.
“Why you?”
“She’d seen me argue with Daniel. She thought I might help.”
“Did you?”
Michael nodded.
“I gave her cash. Got her a motel room. Found a shelter connection in Vermont.”
“And Nick?”
His face twisted.
“She wanted to take him.”
“Then why didn’t she?”
“Daniel had people watching his school.”
Valerie’s stomach turned.
“She thought if she went near Nick, Daniel would find both of them.”
Nick had spent eleven months believing his mother abandoned him.
While Melissa had been living with the agony of staying away to keep him alive.
“Why didn’t you tell police?”
Michael laughed without humor.
“Which police? Paul Mercer?”
“You could have told me.”
“I was a coward.”
Valerie stared at him.
“Yes.”
He flinched.
“Is she alive?”
“I believe so.”
“Where?”
“The last time I heard from her was six months ago.”
Michael gave Ruiz the location of a rural mailbox service in Vermont.
Police traced it.
Then found a rental cabin registered under Sarah Miller.
The cabin was empty.
But recently used.
Coffee grounds still in a kitchen bin.
Laundry hanging dry.
Fresh vegetables in the refrigerator.
Nick was told only that police had found evidence Melissa might still be nearby.
He insisted on going.
Ruiz refused.
“It's an active search.”
“She’s my mother.”
“And we don’t know whether Daniel has found her.”
That stopped him.
Valerie watched fear replace anger.
“Then find her before he does.”
Police searched throughout the afternoon.
At 6:42 p.m., they found Daniel’s abandoned car forty miles from the cabin.
The driver’s door was unlocked.
His phone sat inside.
Nick heard the news and went pale.
“He found her.”
Ruiz did not contradict him.
Search teams spread across the surrounding woods.
Night fell.
Rain began.
Valerie remained at a state police station with both boys.
Thomas paced.
Nick sat utterly still.
At 9:15, a trooper ran inside.
“Ruiz.”
She followed.
Minutes later, she returned.
Her face gave nothing away.
Nick stood.
“Tell me.”
“We found someone.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
Nick’s knees nearly buckled.
“Is she—”
“She’s alive.”
Nick made a sound Valerie would remember forever.
Not a cry.
Not laughter.
Something between both.
“Mom?”
“We’re confirming identity.”
“Take me to her.”
“Nick—”
“Take me!”
Ruiz put both hands on his shoulders.
“She’s injured.”
Nick froze.
“How bad?”
“She has a head wound. Hypothermia. But she’s conscious.”
“Daniel?”
“We don't know.”
An ambulance transported the woman to a hospital in Burlington.
Valerie drove behind with Thomas and Nick.
Nick said nothing the entire way.
At the hospital, a nurse stopped them.
“You’ll need to wait.”
“No,” Nick said.
“Please.”
“I’m her son.”
The nurse looked at Ruiz.
Ruiz nodded.
Five minutes later, the door opened.
Nick entered alone.
Valerie watched through the narrow glass panel.
Melissa Hale looked thinner than the photographs.
Older.
A bandage wrapped around her forehead.
Her face was bruised.
But alive.
Nick stopped several feet from the bed.
Melissa looked up.
Her mouth opened.
“Nick?”
The boy broke.
He crossed the room.
Melissa ripped out an IV line trying to reach him.
Nurses rushed forward.
Mother and son collided in the center of the room.
Melissa held his face.
Kissed his hair.
Touched his bruises.
“Oh my God.”
Nick sobbed.
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“You left me!”
“I know.”
“I thought you were dead!”
Melissa collapsed against him.
“I tried to come back.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“He knew where you were.”
“Who?”
Melissa looked toward the door.
Then at Valerie.
“Daniel.”
Nick grabbed her hands.
“He hurt Thomas.”
Melissa’s face changed.
“Thomas?”
She looked toward Valerie.
“You’re his wife.”
Valerie nodded.
Melissa whispered, “You need to get away from him.”
“We have.”
“No.”
Melissa shook her head frantically.
“You don’t understand.”
She grabbed Nick closer.
“He didn't come to Vermont for me.”
Valerie felt cold.
“What?”
Melissa looked at Thomas through the doorway.
“He came for your son.”
Thomas froze.
Valerie stepped inside.
“Why?”
Melissa swallowed.
“Because Thomas saw something.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
Melissa looked directly at him.
“Last year. The warehouse near the river.”
Thomas’s face drained of color.
Valerie turned.
“What warehouse?”
Thomas began trembling.
“I…”
Nick stared at him.
“You never told me about that.”
Thomas backed away.
“I forgot.”
Melissa whispered, “No, you didn't.”
Thomas started crying.
Valerie moved toward him.
“What did you see?”
Thomas covered his face.
“Dad.”
“What was he doing?”
Thomas looked at her.
The answer came in a whisper.
“Dragging a man into the building.”
Valerie’s blood went cold.
“Who?”
Thomas swallowed.
“I think…”
May you like
He stared at Melissa.
“I think it was the man who died in the fire.”
