Chapter 5 - THE HEIR VICTOR COULD NOT ALLOWRichard had spent his adult life in boardrooms where a wrong decision could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The bullet passed through her shoulder without striking an artery, and Richard had her transferred under a false name to a private hospital guarded by Marcus’s security team.

Maria stayed beside her until dawn.

Richard sat across the room.

Neither spoke much.

Everything between them remained too raw.

Father.

Daughter.

Twenty-eight stolen years.

At six thirty, Teresa opened her eyes.

Maria immediately stood.

“Teresa?”

Teresa looked around.

“Where am I?”

“Safe.”

Her eyes moved to Richard.

She stiffened.

Richard remained seated.

“I’m not Victor.”

“I know exactly who you are.”

Maria looked between them.

“You two have met.”

Teresa gave a weak laugh.

“A lifetime ago.”

Richard nodded.

“Teresa helped Elena leave Boston.”

Maria sat beside the bed.

“Tell me everything.”

Teresa looked at Richard.

“No more secrets?”

Richard answered quietly.

“No more.”

Teresa took a breath.

“Elena discovered she was pregnant shortly after Richard proposed.”

Maria’s eyes moved to Richard.

He looked down.

“She planned to tell him,” Teresa continued. “Then Edward Hale discovered the pregnancy first.”

“How?”

“Richard’s father had people watching everyone.”

Teresa’s mouth tightened.

“He told Elena that if she married Richard, he would destroy her family and make certain she never saw her baby after birth.”

Maria felt sick.

“She didn’t believe him at first.”

“What changed?”

“Thomas Bell.”

The dead accountant.

Teresa continued.

“Thomas showed Elena documents proving Edward had already bribed judges, police officers, and city officials. Elena realized Edward wasn’t bluffing.”

Richard stared at the floor.

“She should have told me.”

“She tried.”

Teresa looked at him sharply.

“You were sent to London for a supposed business emergency.”

Richard froze.

“My father arranged that?”

“Yes.”

“Elena went to your apartment the night before your flight. Victor intercepted her.”

Richard’s hands clenched.

“What did he tell her?”

“That you had chosen the company over her.”

Richard’s face changed with pain.

Teresa continued.

“Then Victor showed her a forged letter supposedly written by you.”

Maria whispered, “What did it say?”

“That Richard would deny the baby.”

Richard stood abruptly.

“That bastard.”

Teresa’s eyes softened slightly.

“Elena believed it.”

Richard walked toward the window.

“For twenty-eight years I thought she didn’t trust me.”

“She was terrified.”

Maria struggled to breathe.

“What happened after she left?”

“Elena took copies of the financial records. She thought they would protect her.”

“But Thomas died.”

“Yes.”

“Was it an accident?”

Teresa looked at Richard.

“No.”

The room went silent.

“Victor ordered it,” she said.

Richard turned.

“Can you prove that?”

“Elena could.”

Teresa pointed toward the music box on the table.

“The key.”

Maria picked it up.

“What does it open?”

Teresa explained that Edward Hale owned an estate in Vermont called Blackwood Lodge.

The property had been abandoned for twenty years.

Inside the wine cellar was a private vault that did not appear on any architectural plans.

“Elena learned about it from Thomas.”

“What’s inside?”

“Edward kept personal records there. Payments. Blackmail files. Recorded conversations. Evidence against businessmen, politicians, anyone he wanted control over.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“My father always kept leverage.”

“Elena believed proof of Thomas’s murder might be there.”

Maria stared at the silver key.

“Why didn’t she go get it?”

“She was pregnant. Alone. And Victor was searching for her.”

Teresa swallowed.

“So she waited.”

“For twenty-eight years?”

“No.”

Teresa’s expression changed.

“She went back sixteen years ago.”

Maria’s chest tightened.

“The year she died.”

Teresa nodded.

“Elena told me she had discovered the vault’s location again. She said she was finally going to end it.”

Maria stood.

“You knew?”

“I begged her not to go.”

“And then she died.”

“Yes.”

Maria’s voice shook.

“In a car accident.”

Teresa looked at her.

“I never believed it was an accident.”

Richard’s face turned hard.

Neither did I.”

Maria wiped her eyes.

“Then why wasn’t Victor investigated?”

“He was,” Richard said. “Quietly. Nothing connected him.”

Teresa reached for Maria’s hand.

“Elena left instructions. If anything happened to her, I was supposed to protect you. But years later I realized Victor had found me. So I disappeared.”

Maria looked down.

“And now?”

“Now Richard finally knows who you are. Victor knows the secret is coming apart.”

Richard picked up his phone.

“We go to Vermont today.”

Marcus objected immediately.

“Sir, Victor will assume exactly that.”

Richard replied, “Then we arrive before he does.”

They left Boston under heavy security.

Blackwood Lodge stood deep in the Vermont mountains.

The mansion was enormous, empty, and decaying.

Snow still covered patches of ground beneath the trees.

Richard unlocked the main doors.

Dust filled the air.

Maria looked around.

“You grew up here?”

“Summers.”

“Was Victor always like this?”

Richard hesitated.

“He always wanted what belonged to someone else.”

They descended into the wine cellar.

Rows of empty racks stretched into darkness.

Teresa had described a stone wall behind the oldest cabinet.

Marcus’s team moved it.

Behind it was a steel door.

Maria inserted the silver key.

It fit.

Richard looked at her.

“Ready?”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“Neither am I.”

She turned the key.

The lock opened.

Inside was a small room filled with boxes.

File cabinets.

Old computer drives.

Cassette tapes.

Richard stared.

“My God.”

Maria noticed one box labeled E.S.

She opened it.

Inside were letters from Elena.

Photographs.

Medical records.

And one sealed package addressed:

For Richard and Maria.

Maria’s hands trembled.

Richard opened it.

A small recorder lay inside.

He pressed play.

Elena’s voice filled the room.

“If you are hearing this, then something happened to me.”

Maria covered her mouth.

She had not heard her mother’s voice in twelve years.

“Elena,” Richard whispered.

The recording continued.

“Richard, I need you to know I never stopped loving you. And Maria… sweetheart, I’m sorry I never told you who your father was.”

Maria began crying.

Richard turned away, struggling to control himself.

Elena’s voice continued.

“But there is something worse you both need to know.”

A pause.

“If Victor learns Maria is Richard’s daughter, he will not only see her as a witness.”

Another pause.

“He will see her as the person who can take everything from him.”

Maria frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Richard looked equally confused.

The recording continued.

“Edward changed his will.”

Richard froze.

“Maria is the majority heir to the Hale family trust.”

Everyone stared at her.

Maria could barely process the sentence.

Then Marcus shouted from the cellar entrance.

“Sir!”

Richard turned.

Marcus’s face was tense.

“Vehicles approaching.”

“How many?”

“Five.”

Maria looked at the open vault.

Richard asked the question they were all thinking.

“Victor?”

Marcus checked the security feed.

His expression darkened.

May you like

“Yes.”

“And he brought armed men.”
