Chapter 11 - What Truth CostsVictoria Harrington was charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, falsifying financial records, and participation in illegal transactions.

The front door was broken.

Furniture overturned.

A bedroom window open.

But Sofia was gone.

Daniel told Maria at the hospital.

She tried to stand despite her wounded arm.

“I’m going with you.”

“No.”

“That is my daughter.”

“And I’m bringing her back.”

Maria stared into his eyes.

“Promise me.”

Daniel nodded.

“I promise.”

Police initially believed Victor had taken Sofia.

Then hospital records showed Victor had been under continuous guard.

He could not have done it.

Charles Bennett remained hospitalized.

Nathan was in custody.

Alexander was fleeing police.

Who remained?

Investigators searched Sofia’s apartment.

They found a dropped phone.

One partial fingerprint.

Brooks ran it.

Her expression changed.

“It belongs to someone we already interviewed.”

“Who?”

“Rebecca Sloan.”

Victoria’s attorney.

Daniel stared.

Rebecca had represented his mother for fourteen years.

She had attended family dinners.

Handled estate matters.

Visited the mansion weekly.

Brooks searched Rebecca’s financial history.

Hidden payments connected her to Alexander.

She was not merely an attorney protecting Victoria.

She had been Alexander’s legal architect for years.

Rebecca had helped create shell companies, false identities, and trusts.

Worse, she had access to every confidential Harrington investigation.

“She’s the reason Alexander stayed ahead of us,” Brooks said.

Daniel felt furious.

“Where would she take Sofia?”

Nathan provided the clue.

Alexander owned a property under another company name.

An abandoned coastal house near Gloucester.

Police surrounded it before dawn.

Rebecca was found inside.

So was Sofia.

But Alexander arrived first.

He had escaped Harrington Tower through underground parking and driven north.

By the time tactical officers entered the property, Rebecca was unconscious.

Sofia was gone again.

Tracks led toward the cliffs.

Daniel reached the scene minutes later.

Brooks tried to keep him away.

Then his phone rang.

Alexander.

Daniel answered.

“You have something I want,” Alexander said.

“Sofia?”

“She’s alive.”

“Let her go.”

“Bring me Richard’s DNA report.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I want to see the lie with my own eyes.”

“Where?”

Alexander gave coordinates near an old lighthouse.

“No police.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You know that isn’t happening.”

“Then the girl dies.”

The call ended.

Brooks had heard everything.

“He wants the report because his identity is collapsing,” she said.

Daniel looked toward the ocean.

“He spent his whole life believing he was a Harrington.”

“That belief justified everything he did.”

“Then I’m taking it away.”

Daniel carried a copy of the DNA report to the lighthouse.

Police positioned snipers far enough away not to be visible.

Wind tore across the cliffs.

Sofia stood near the lighthouse railing.

Alexander held a gun.

Daniel approached alone.

“Let her walk toward me.”

“Report first.”

Daniel held it up.

“Richard tested samples from Edmund’s personal belongings against yours.”

Alexander laughed.

“Fabricated.”

“Read it.”

Daniel slid the folder across the ground.

Alexander picked it up with one hand.

His eyes moved over the pages.

Something inside him cracked.

“No.”

“Alexander—”

“No!”

He tore the page.

“He stole everything from me!”

Daniel remained calm.

“Richard didn’t create the truth.”

“He hated me!”

“He tried to pay you because he felt guilty about what his father did.”

“He pitied me.”

“Yes.”

Alexander looked stunned by Daniel’s willingness to say it.

“Maybe he did.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“But Richard’s mistakes don’t make your crimes disappear.”

Alexander tightened his grip on Sofia.

“You stand there with his face and judge me?”

“No.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I’m telling you it can end.”

Alexander laughed wildly.

“For you, perhaps.”

Police sirens sounded faintly.

Alexander realized he had been surrounded.

His eyes shifted toward the cliff.

Sofia saw it too.

She suddenly drove her heel onto his foot.

Alexander shouted.

She pulled away.

Daniel ran forward.

Alexander raised the gun.

A shot fired.

Daniel stumbled.

Sofia screamed.

Police rushed from cover.

Alexander backed toward the cliff edge.

Brooks shouted:

“Drop the weapon!”

Alexander looked at Daniel.

Blood spread across Daniel’s shoulder.

Not fatal.

Alexander smiled bitterly.

“You still win.”

Daniel pressed a hand against the wound.

“This isn’t winning.”

Alexander looked toward the ocean.

“For men like us, it always is.”

Then he stepped backward.

His foot slipped.

For one second, Alexander hung at the cliff edge.

Daniel moved instinctively.

He grabbed Alexander’s wrist.

Everyone froze.

Alexander stared up at him.

“Why?”

Daniel strained to hold him.

“Because I’m not you.”

Police pulled Alexander to safety.

He was arrested.

Sofia ran to Daniel.

“You’re bleeding.”

“So are half the people I know this week.”

She laughed through tears.

Brooks helped him stand.

For the first time since Maria entered breakfast with that poisoned glass, Daniel believed the nightmare might finally be ending.

Then Brooks’s phone rang.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Daniel watched her carefully.

“What happened?”

Brooks ended the call.

“It’s your mother.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

“Is she hurt?”

“No.”

Brooks hesitated.

“Federal prosecutors just charged her.”

Daniel stared toward the ocean.

May you like

The family had survived Alexander.

But the consequences of thirty years of secrets were only beginning.
