Chapter 11 - A House Without SecretsBlackwood Mansion could not be saved.

A nurse found his bed empty.

His IV cut.

Security footage showed a man wearing medical scrubs pushing him through a service exit in a wheelchair.

Grace stared at the report.

“He took Lily?”

Alexander didn’t answer.

Something felt wrong.

Marcus had warned him.

Marcus had helped expose Evelyn.

Marcus knew Grace found Rebecca alive.

Why kidnap Lily?

Then Detective Hayes found another piece.

The unconscious FBI officer at the cabin had not been shot.

He had been sedated.

No violence.

And Lily’s shoes were missing.

“She walked out,” Grace whispered.

“Meaning she knew whoever took her.”

Marcus had spent years at Blackwood Mansion.

Lily knew him.

But she had been afraid of him the day the passage opened.

Would she willingly leave?

Grace rushed to Lily’s bedroom.

On the desk was a drawing.

Three stick figures.

Mommy.

Mr. Blackwood.

Lily.

And a fourth person standing beside a car.

A woman with gray hair.

Grace pointed.

“Who is that?”

Alexander knew.

Rebecca Vale.

Marcus’s mother.

Lily had seen her.

Grace remembered taking Lily to meet Rebecca months earlier.

Rebecca lived under a new identity.

Grace had promised to protect her.

If Rebecca believed Marcus was in danger, she might have come herself.

They found them at a roadside motel eighty miles north.

No kidnapping.

No weapons.

Marcus lay in bed, pale from his injuries.

Rebecca sat beside him.

Lily was eating cereal.

Grace burst through the door.

“Lily!”

“Mommy!”

They collided.

Rebecca stood.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace glared.

“You took my daughter.”

“I saved her.”

“From whom?”

Rebecca looked toward Marcus.

“Tell them.”

Marcus struggled upright.

“There’s another player.”

Alexander’s patience snapped.

“Who?”

“My father.”

Everyone froze.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“The man who raised me wasn’t my biological father.”

Alexander understood before Marcus finished.

Richard.

Rebecca had been having an affair with Richard.

Marcus Vale was Richard Blackwood’s son.

Sebastian’s half-brother.

Lily’s uncle.

Another heir.

But Marcus shook his head.

“That’s not the problem.”

“What is?”

“Richard knew I was his son.”

“Then why manipulate you?”

“He didn’t.”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Sebastian forged letters pretending they were from Richard.”

Alexander’s head hurt from generations of lies.

Marcus continued.

“My real father contacted me two years ago. He wanted to expose Sebastian.”

“And?”

“I didn’t believe him.”

Rebecca touched her son’s shoulder.

“Richard asked me to help.”

Grace stared.

“You were in contact with him?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Everywhere.”

Rebecca’s voice trembled.

“He knew he was dying. He wanted to confess.”

Richard had recorded a complete statement before Sebastian killed him.

Not in Theodore’s archive.

Somewhere else.

A statement proving Blackwood financial crimes, Richard’s own abuse, Sebastian’s fraud, and Evelyn’s conspiracy.

“Where is it?” Alexander asked.

Marcus looked at Lily.

“She knows.”

Grace stared at her daughter.

Lily blinked.

“I do?”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Remember Mr. Teddy?”

Lily’s face lit up.

“The old man with candy!”

Grace almost stopped breathing.

Six months earlier Lily had met an elderly man in the estate garden.

Grace assumed he was a contractor.

Richard.

He had given Lily a stuffed bear.

Teddy.

The bear was still at Blackwood Mansion.

Or what remained of it.

Alexander called the fire chief.

The east guest cottage had survived.

Lily’s toys were intact.

Inside Teddy’s back seam, investigators found a memory card.

Richard Blackwood’s confession.

Three hours long.

Enough to collapse every remaining lie.

It cleared Alexander of the financial crimes Evelyn had framed him for.

It exposed Sebastian’s bribery.

It confirmed Marcus had participated under coercion but later attempted to stop the conspiracy.

Most importantly, Richard confessed to abusing Rebecca and Catherine.

He apologized by name.

Catherine watched the recording alone.

When she emerged, she had been crying.

“He finally said it.”

Alexander stood beside her.

“Does it help?”

“No.”

Then after a moment:

“Yes.”

Marcus negotiated with prosecutors.

He would serve time, but his cooperation reduced the sentence.

Rebecca promised to visit him.

For the first time since age six, Marcus had his mother.

Evelyn refused a plea deal.

Sebastian blamed everyone but himself.

The federal case against Alexander collapsed.

Blackwood Holdings’ board offered him immediate reinstatement.

He surprised them.

“No.”

The chairman stared.

“You built this company.”

“I inherited it.”

“You’re walking away?”

“I’m changing it.”

Alexander proposed separating ownership from family control.

Employee equity.

Independent governance.

A victims’ restitution fund for people harmed by historical Blackwood misconduct.

The board hated it.

Investors loved it.

Grace watched from the back of the meeting room.

When Alexander emerged, she smiled.

“You enjoy making powerful men angry.”

“It’s becoming a hobby.”

“Expensive hobby.”

“I can afford it.”

She rolled her eyes.

Then he became serious.

“Grace.”

“What?”

“When this is over…”

“It is over.”

“No.”

He looked at her in a way that made her heartbeat change.

“The investigation is over.”

She knew what he meant.

The danger had given them excuses.

Fear.

Adrenaline.

Lily.

Now only choice remained.

Alexander stepped closer.

“I don’t want you working for me anymore.”

Grace stared.

“That is an extremely bad way to start a romantic conversation.”

He blinked.

She laughed.

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

He took her hand.

“I don’t want you staying because I employ you.”

Grace’s laughter faded.

“And what do you want?”

“You.”

Simple.

No billionaire speech.

No dramatic promise.

Just one word.

Grace looked at him.

Then kissed him.

Across the hallway, Lily whispered loudly to Rebecca:

“I knew it.”
