Chapter 10 - The Man Who Was Always in the RoomRebecca's kidnapping changed the investigation overnight.

Thomas answered on the second ring.
"Adrian."
The voice was warm.
Familiar.
The same voice that had taught him to negotiate.
The same voice that once congratulated him on graduating college.
The same voice that may have ordered his wife's death.
"Uncle Thomas."
A pause.
"I'm glad you called."
"I need this to stop."
Thomas sounded almost relieved.
"Then come home."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because I opened Rachel's vault."
Silence.
Adrian looked at Marcus across the hotel suite.
The call was being recorded by investigators.
Thomas finally spoke.
"And what did Rachel leave you?"
"Enough."
"Enough for what?"
"To ruin the company."
Thomas sighed.
"Rachel never understood consequences."
Adrian felt rage.
He let none of it into his voice.
"Maybe."
"What do you want?"
"I want Noah protected."
"He is family."
"Don't."
Thomas paused.
"Don't what?"
"Pretend."
Adrian walked toward the window.
"I know about VNX-17."
Long silence.
There.
Not denial.
Thomas asked carefully, "Who told you?"
"Does it matter?"
"Adrian, you are wandering into areas you don't understand."
"Then explain."
"Not by phone."
"Meet me."
Marcus gave a small nod.
Thomas answered.
"Where?"
Adrian named a private estate outside Geneva.
It belonged to a Vale subsidiary but had been cleared by Swiss authorities.
Thomas said, "Alone."
"Of course."
They both knew that meant neither would be alone.
Three hours later, Thomas arrived.
Adrian watched his uncle walk into the library where investigators had hidden cameras and microphones.
Thomas looked older than he remembered.
Not weak.
Just mortal.
That surprised Adrian.
Monsters should look different.
Usually they didn't.
"Where is Noah?" Thomas asked.
"Safe."
"And the evidence?"
"Safe."
Thomas smiled.
"Still dramatic."
"You killed Rachel."
Thomas's expression barely moved.
"No."
"You ordered it."
"No."
"I watched the video."
Now something changed.
Thomas crossed to the bar.
"Poured drinks?"
Adrian said nothing.
Thomas poured one for himself.
"Rachel recorded a conversation out of context."
"You said pregnancy was dangerous."
"It is."
"You told Victor nature could be encouraged."
Thomas took a sip.
"You think wealthy men never speak carelessly?"
"Not about killing my wife."
Thomas looked tired.
"Rachel threatened an operation she didn't understand."
"Illegal drug trials?"
"Medical innovation."
"On infants without proper consent."
"Standards differ internationally."
Adrian felt disgust.
"Children differ too, apparently."
"Don't become sentimental."
"My six-month-old son was drugged."
Thomas's face tightened.
"That was not authorized."
Adrian caught it.
"Authorized."
Thomas realized.
Too late.
Adrian stepped closer.
"So there was a plan involving Noah."
"No."
"You just said his drugging wasn't authorized."
"I meant if someone did it—"
"Stop."
Thomas's eyes hardened.
Finally, the family warmth disappeared.
"Do you know what Vale Meridian was when your father and I inherited it?"
"A shipping company."
"A dying shipping company."
Thomas pointed at him.
"I built the networks you used to become a billionaire."
"By smuggling."
"By doing what governments quietly needed done."
"Biological material?"
"Technology. Medicine. Information."
"People?"
Thomas didn't answer.
Adrian's stomach turned.
"You moved people too."
"We moved assets."
"Human beings are not assets."
"Everyone is an asset to someone."
The line explained Thomas more completely than any evidence could.
Adrian thought of Rachel.
Emma.
Noah.
To Thomas, each was either useful or dangerous.
Nothing more.
"Michael Sullivan," Adrian said.
Thomas's eyes flickered.
"You remember him."
"Should I?"
"He emailed you before he died."
"Thousands emailed me."
"He knew about the containers."
Thomas shrugged.
"Then perhaps he shouldn't have driven during a storm."
Adrian went completely still.
Thomas smiled faintly.
Not confession.
Close enough to cruelty.
Adrian moved closer.
"You threatened Laura's children."
"Celeste handled operational problems."
"Blaming her?"
"I'm describing hierarchy."
"Did Celeste know you intended Rachel to die?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Adrian believed it.
"Did Harrison?"
Thomas hesitated.
Interesting.
"No," he finally said.
"So Harrison helped with money but not murder."
"You've become very confident."
"You taught me."
Thomas smiled.
"Yes."
For one strange moment, Adrian saw the uncle who took him fishing when he was twelve.
The man who gave him his first office.
The mentor whose approval he once chased.
Then Thomas said:
"You were always my best investment."
And the illusion died.
Adrian's voice became soft.
"I'm not yours."
"No?"
Thomas set down his glass.
"Everything you have exists because I built the machine beneath it."
"My wife died because of your machine."
"Rachel died because she refused to understand scale."
"She died because you were afraid of her."
Thomas's eyes flashed.
"Rachel was a schoolteacher."
"And she beat you."
Silence.
Adrian smiled.
"A schoolteacher found the system you spent twenty-six years hiding."
"She found fragments."
"Enough that you're standing here."
Thomas's face hardened.
"What do you want?"
"Walk away."
"From what?"
"Vale Meridian."
Thomas laughed.
"You don't control me."
"Confess."
The laughter stopped.
"You're joking."
"Financial conspiracy. Medical crimes. Rachel."
"You have no proof of homicide."
"Maybe."
Thomas studied him.
Then understood.
"This meeting."
Adrian said nothing.
Thomas looked around slowly.
"You wired the room."
Adrian smiled.
"You taught me that too."
Thomas stepped toward the door.
Adrian blocked him.
"I'm offering one thing."
"What?"
"Noah stays out of this."
Thomas's expression changed.
"You brought him?"
"No."
"Where is he?"
"Somewhere you can't reach."
"You think I want to hurt that boy?"
"You want his genetics."
Thomas became still.
Adrian had hit the center.
"VNX-17," Adrian said.
"Noah carries Rachel's protective variant."
Thomas's eyes sharpened.
"Where did you learn that?"
"Her vault."
"Did she preserve samples?"
Now Adrian knew.
Thomas had never known exactly what Rachel possessed.
Adrian deliberately smiled.
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
Thomas stepped closer.
"That research could save thousands of children."
"Then release it publicly."
"You don't understand patents."
"I understand greed."
"Without capital there is no medicine."
"Without ethics there are victims."
Thomas shook his head.
"Rachel infected you with her simplicity."
Adrian's anger became pride.
"Best thing she ever did."
Thomas stared.
Then the library doors opened.
Swiss police entered.
Thomas looked almost amused.
"On what charge?"
An officer responded.
"Conspiracy, financial crimes, obstruction, and matters pending further investigation."
Thomas turned to Adrian.
"You think this ends with me?"
"No."
Adrian looked at his uncle.
"I think it starts."
Thomas was escorted away.
Adrian exhaled.
Marcus entered from the adjoining room.
"That went well."
"He didn't confess to murder."
"No."
"But he admitted operational knowledge."
"And Noah."
"Yes."
Laura entered with Emma.
Emma looked disappointed.
"That's him?"
Adrian nodded.
"He doesn't look scary."
"No."
"He looks like somebody's grandpa."
"He is."
"That's weird."
Adrian agreed.
The case should have felt won.
It didn't.
Because one person remained missing.
Victor Lang.
And at 6:17 that evening, Adrian learned why.
Victor had not been fleeing Thomas.
He had been fleeing everyone.
Prague police found his hotel room empty.
Blood on the carpet.
A broken phone.
No body.
On the wall, written in black marker:
THOMAS ISN'T THE ARCHITECT.
Marcus stared at the photograph.
Laura whispered, "Rachel was wrong?"
Adrian shook his head slowly.
"No."
Rachel had called someone the architect.
Adrian had assumed she meant Thomas after reading the vault letter.
But now he remembered the exact wording.
Thomas built the network.
She never called him the architect.
A different person had designed the modern system.
Someone still free.
Someone cleaning up loose ends.
Renner dead.
Victor missing.
Thomas arrested.
Adrian looked at the message.
Thomas isn't the architect.
Then his phone rang.
Rebecca Shaw.
Adrian answered.
"Rebecca?"
Nothing.
Then a man's voice.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian's blood froze.
"Who is this?"
"We have Ms. Shaw."
Rebecca screamed in the background.
The voice continued.
"And if you ever want to see her alive, bring Rachel's medical case to New York."
The call ended.
Emma whispered, "Who was that?"
Adrian stared at the phone.
Someone who had remained invisible while everyone blamed Thomas.
Someone who knew Rachel's evidence existed.
Someone close enough to abduct Vale Meridian's chief operating officer.
Someone who understood exactly where Adrian would go next.
May you like
He looked at Marcus.
"We're going home."
