Chapter 8 - WHEN STONE FELLAdrian woke to the sound of someone whispering.

“Daisy says hospital food is gross.”
He opened his eyes.
Emma sat beside the bed.
Her feet did not reach the floor.
Daisy sat on her lap wearing a child-sized surgical mask.
Adrian blinked.
Pain burned through his side.
“Daisy talks now?”
Emma nodded solemnly.
“When important.”
Adrian looked toward the window.
Daylight.
“How long?”
“Two sleeps.”
Sofia appeared from the corner.
“You’ve been awake on and off.”
He looked at her.
Dark circles beneath her eyes.
Same clothes as the warehouse.
“You stayed.”
She folded her arms.
“Unfortunately.”
His mouth twitched.
“What happened?”
“Lucian is alive.”
The humor vanished.
“Where?”
“Federal custody.”
“Charges?”
“Agent Sloan says conspiracy, weapons trafficking, attempted murder, and more once they finish processing Daniel’s files.”
“Elena?”
Sofia’s eyes softened.
“The recording got everything.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Lucian’s confession.
She wasn’t supposed to be in the car.
Claire’s death had been collateral damage in his brother’s ambition.
Adrian felt sick.
Emma slid from the chair.
She climbed carefully onto the edge of the hospital bed.
Sofia moved to stop her.
Adrian shook his head.
Emma touched the bandage.
“Does it hurt?”
“Yes.”
She frowned.
“Mommy says brave doesn’t mean no hurt.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
She shrugged.
“I say lots of things.”
Emma whispered, “I was scared.”
Adrian swallowed.
“Me too.”
Her eyes widened.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“You’re Stone.”
“Apparently stones get scared.”
Emma thought about this.
“Okay.”
Then she rested her cheek against his arm.
Adrian stared at the ceiling.
His eyes burned.
Sofia turned away to give him privacy.
He noticed.
“Don’t.”
She looked back.
“What?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t see it.”
Her expression softened.
So she stayed.
Three days later, Adrian returned home.
Claire’s wing remained closed for repairs.
He refused to restore the bedroom exactly as it had been.
That surprised everyone.
Instead, he told the contractor to preserve what could be saved and pack the rest carefully.
“The room shouldn’t be a tomb,” he told Marco.
It was the first time he had admitted that.
The investigation expanded quickly.
Daniel’s USB drive revealed financial records tying Lucian to shell corporations, corrupt customs officers, and illegal shipments.
But one mystery remained.
The original audio file Daniel had made.
The digital recorder was still missing.
Sloan believed Lucian had taken it the night Daniel died.
Lucian refused to speak.
Until he made one request.
He wanted to see Adrian.
Alone.
Federal detention center.
No lawyers.
No Sofia.
Adrian said no.
Then Lucian sent a message.
ASK EMMA ABOUT THE MUSIC.
Adrian’s blood ran cold.
He drove directly home.
Emma sat in Elena’s old sunroom building towers from wooden blocks.
“Little bird.”
She looked up.
“What music did Daddy like?”
Sofia entered behind him.
“What is this?”
“Lucian sent a message.”
Her face hardened.
Adrian crouched.
“Did your dad ever give you something that played music?”
Emma thought.
“Daddy phone?”
“Maybe.”
“No.”
“Toy?”
She looked at Daisy.
Then shook her head.
Adrian pointed to the rag doll.
“What about Daisy?”
Emma hugged her.
“Daisy doesn’t sing.”
Sofia froze.
“What?”
“What?”
“Daniel bought Daisy.”
Adrian looked at the doll.
“When?”
“The week before he died.”
They stared at each other.
Emma tightened her grip.
“No.”
Sofia knelt.
“Baby, can I see Daisy?”
“No.”
“It’s okay.”
“No cutting.”
Adrian’s chest tightened.
“Who said anything about cutting?”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“Daddy said don’t let anybody cut Daisy.”
Silence.
Sofia slowly covered her mouth.
“Emma.”
The child began crying.
“Daddy said keep her safe.”
Sofia pulled her close.
Adrian looked at the doll.
Daniel had hidden the evidence in the one object he knew would stay beside his daughter.
For three years, Emma had carried it everywhere.
Into grocery stores.
Onto buses.
Into the Moretti estate.
Past Lucian.
Adrian almost laughed at the brilliance.
They opened a seam beneath Daisy’s dress.
Inside the stuffing was a tiny memory card wrapped in plastic.
Sofia wept.
Adrian called Sloan.
The audio was seventeen minutes long.
Daniel’s voice came first.
Testing.
Then Lucian.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
He discussed shipping weapons through Moretti freight routes.
Then another man asked, “What about your brother?”
Lucian answered.
“He won’t cooperate.”
“And Elena?”
Pause.
“She’s become a problem.”
The second man laughed.
“You planning divorce for them?”
“No.”
Lucian’s voice turned colder.
“Grief is more persuasive.”
Adrian stopped the recording.
He could not continue.
Sofia sat beside him.
“Enough.”
“No.”
“You don’t have to hear every second.”
“Yes.”
He pressed play.
Lucian discussed the fundraiser route.
The car.
The disabled cameras.
The remote trigger.
Daniel had captured everything.
Not just conspiracy.
Premeditation.
Murder.
Adrian listened until the recording ended.
Then he sat in silence.
Sofia reached for his hand.
He let her.
That night, Adrian entered Claire’s damaged room alone.
Construction lights illuminated the stripped walls.
The music box survived.
Blackened at one corner.
He turned the key.
The melody played unevenly.
Adrian sat on the floor.
“I’m sorry, princess.”
He had apologized to Claire a thousand times in his head.
But this time was different.
“I thought I failed you.”
His voice cracked.
“Maybe I did.”
He wiped his face.
“But I’m trying to stop dying with you.”
A tiny voice behind him said, “Good.”
Adrian turned.
Emma stood in the doorway.
Sofia appeared behind her.
“I told her not to come in.”
Emma frowned.
“He needs me.”
Adrian almost laughed.
She walked over and sat beside him.
“Claire can still be your girl.”
He looked at her.
“And?”
Emma leaned against his arm.
“You can still be here too.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
Something in her expression frightened him more than gunfire.
Hope.
Weeks passed.
Lucian was formally indicted.
Rossi’s killers were arrested.
Corrupt officers began cooperating.
Federal prosecutors offered Adrian limited immunity in exchange for records exposing the weapons network.
He gave them everything related to Lucian.
Then he surprised everyone by giving them more.
Old Moretti accounts.
Bribery routes.
Illegal gambling books.
Marco stared at him.
“Boss.”
“I’m done.”
“With Lucian?”
“With all of it.”
Marco looked genuinely stunned.
“You’re shutting down?”
“I’m converting what can be legitimate.”
“And what can’t?”
“Close it.”
“People won’t like that.”
“I’m not asking.”
Marco studied him.
“What happened to Stone?”
Adrian looked through the window.
Emma was helping Sofia plant winter roses in the repaired garden.
“He got tired.”
Christmas approached.
The mansion changed.
Lights appeared.
Mrs. Delaney baked cookies.
Someone put a wreath on the front door.
Adrian blamed Emma.
She confessed proudly.
One evening, Sofia found him in the library.
“You gave me this.”
She placed an envelope on the desk.
Inside was the deed to a small house.
Paid in full.
Three bedrooms.
A yard.
Good school district.
“You wanted to leave.”
Sofia stared.
“You bought us a house?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You need somewhere safe.”
She looked toward the Christmas tree.
“And if I don’t want to go?”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
Sofia’s voice softened.
“Emma calls this home.”
His chest tightened.
“What do you call it?”
She stared at him for a long moment.
Then smiled sadly.
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Whether you keep trying to send us away every time you feel something.”
Adrian’s heart began pounding.
He stood.
“Sofia.”
She stepped closer.
“You saved my daughter.”
“You saved me.”
“What?”
“You came into a dead house carrying a child and somehow made it loud again.”
Her eyes filled.
Adrian touched her cheek.
“Tell me to stop.”
She whispered, “I won’t.”
He kissed her.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Not like a crime boss claiming something.
Like a grieving man asking permission to live.
Then a small voice shouted from the doorway.
“EW!”
They jumped apart.
Emma stood with both hands over Daisy’s eyes.
“Daisy saw everything.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
May you like
Sofia started laughing.
And for the first time in three years, Adrian Moretti laughed too.
