Chapter 2 - The Man in the BasementThe attacker was tied to a metal chair beneath Blackridge Estate.

Claire did not see him at first.

She stayed upstairs with Elena, checking vital signs every fifteen minutes, adjusting blankets, watching for fever, bleeding, shock, anything that could turn survival into tragedy.

But the mansion carried sound strangely.

Low voices moved through the floors.

Doors opened.

Men walked with purpose.

Somewhere below, a man screamed once.

Claire closed her eyes.

She had worked in hospitals too long to romanticize pain. Pain was not justice. Pain was information broken out of a body. Sometimes it was useful. Usually, it was ugly.

Elena stirred just after sunrise.

Claire leaned close.

“Elena? Can you hear me?”

The woman’s lips parted.

“Dom…”

“He’s here. He’s safe.”

Elena’s fingers twitched against the sheet.

“Don’t… trust…”

Claire lowered her voice.

“Don’t trust who?”

Elena struggled against the fog of medication.

“Marcus…”

Then her eyes closed again.

Claire froze.

At the door, the guard assigned outside glanced in.

Claire stepped backward slowly.

Marcus.

The scarred man.

Dominic’s right hand.

The man who had said no ambulance.

The man who had raised his weapon when Claire challenged him.

Claire moved fast.

She checked Elena’s lines, made sure the sedative was stable, then slipped into the hall.

Two guards stood near the door.

“I need Dominic,” she said.

One of them nodded.

“Mr. Vale is downstairs.”

“I know.”

“We can call him.”

“No. I need to see him now.”

The second guard looked uncertain.

“Marcus said no one goes downstairs.”

Claire’s heartbeat kicked.

“Marcus isn’t bleeding through a surgical dressing. Elena is. If Dominic wants his sister alive, he will want to hear what I have to say.”

The first guard hesitated, then guided her toward the elevator.

The basement level smelled of concrete, gun oil, and old rain.

Dominic stood behind a glass wall, watching the masked attacker on the other side. The man’s mask had been removed. He was younger than Claire expected. Maybe thirty. Bruised face. Split lip. Fear dressed as defiance.

Marcus stood beside Dominic.

Claire stopped at the entrance.

Dominic saw her reflection first.

“What happened?”

Claire looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked back without blinking.

“I need to speak to you alone.”

Dominic’s gaze sharpened.

Marcus gave a humorless laugh.

“Now the nurse gives orders in the basement too?”

Claire did not answer him.

Dominic studied her face.

“Leave us.”

Marcus turned slowly.

“Boss?”

“You heard me.”

For one dangerous second, Marcus did not move.

Then he smiled.

“Of course.”

He walked out, brushing past Claire close enough that she could feel the threat in his shoulder.

When the door shut, Dominic stepped toward her.

“Elena woke?”

“Briefly.”

“What did she say?”

Claire looked toward the hallway where Marcus had gone.

“She said not to trust him.”

Dominic’s face became unreadable.

“Marcus has been with me for fourteen years.”

“Elena was shot tonight.”

“She was delirious.”

“Maybe.”

Claire stepped closer.

“But she used the strength she had to warn you. You can ignore it because loyalty is comfortable, or you can listen because your sister nearly died.”

Dominic’s jaw flexed.

On the other side of the glass, the prisoner laughed weakly.

“You should listen to her, Vale.”

Dominic turned.

The prisoner smiled through blood.

“Your sister was smart. Smarter than all of you. She figured it out before midnight.”

Dominic opened the door and walked into the interrogation room.

Claire followed before anyone could stop her.

Dominic looked back.

“Stay outside.”

“No.”

“This is not your world.”

“My hospital is in this now. My brother may be in this now. So unless you plan to erase my memory, I’m staying.”

The prisoner’s eyes flicked to Claire.

“You’re the nurse.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“How do you know that?”

His smile widened.

“Everyone knows you now.”

Dominic moved so fast Claire barely saw him. One second he stood near the door; the next, his hand was around the prisoner’s throat.

“Who sent you?”

The prisoner gagged, but laughed.

Dominic released just enough for air.

“Roman Calder,” the man rasped.

Marcus had mentioned Calder earlier in the hallway, Claire remembered. A rival name spoken like a curse.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Calder doesn’t touch my blood without a reason.”

“He had a reason. Your sister had his ledgers.”

“What ledgers?”

“Ask your doctor.”

Claire felt a chill.

“Hale?”

The prisoner looked at her.

“Dr. Victor Hale is just a pretty face on a rotten machine. He supplies hospitals. Calder moves product. Someone inside Vale protection keeps the port inspectors blind.”

Dominic leaned closer.

“Who?”

The prisoner’s smile faded.

“I say the name, I die.”

Dominic’s voice became soft.

“You are already in my basement.”

The prisoner swallowed.

Claire saw something then.

Not guilt.

Terror.

The man was not afraid of Dominic.

He was afraid of someone else.

“You don’t understand,” he whispered. “Calder wanted Elena dead. But the order to bring her into the woods came from inside this house.”

Dominic went still.

The door behind them opened.

Marcus stood there with a gun in his hand.

He was not pointing it at Dominic.

He was pointing it at the prisoner.

“No,” Claire shouted.

Marcus fired.

Dominic shoved Claire behind him as the bullet hit the prisoner in the chest.

The room erupted.

Dominic’s men grabbed Marcus. He did not resist. He only looked at Dominic with cold, exhausted eyes.

The prisoner gasped once.

Claire rushed forward by instinct, pressing her hands to the wound.

Dominic caught her shoulder.

“Claire.”

“He’s dying.”

“He tried to kill my sister.”

“He has answers.”

The prisoner’s eyes rolled toward her.

“St. Agnes,” he breathed.

Claire leaned closer.

“What?”

“Pier… tonight… shipment…”

Blood bubbled at his lips.

“Ledger… nurse… watch…”

His eyes fixed on Claire’s scrub pocket.

Then his body went still.

Claire slowly looked down.

Her father’s broken brass pocket watch pressed against her thigh through the fabric.

Dominic saw the movement.

“What did he mean by watch?”

Claire pulled it out with shaking fingers.

The old watch had not ticked in ten years.

She opened the scratched cover.

The hands still pointed at 9:17.

But something was wrong.

Inside the lid, beneath the old photograph of her father, a thin piece of folded paper had been tucked where there had never been paper before.

Claire stared at it.

“I didn’t put that there.”

Dominic took one step closer.

She unfolded it.

Three words had been written in Elena Vale’s handwriting.

TELL DOMINIC EVERYTHING.

Below that was a string of numbers.

Dominic stared at the paper.

His face lost color.

“What is it?” Claire asked.

“A vault code.”

“For what?”

May you like

Dominic looked toward the ceiling, toward the bedroom where his sister lay unconscious.

“For the one account no one in my organization is supposed to know exists.”
