Chapter 10 - The Fall of Dominic ValeFederal vehicles filled the driveway before sunrise.

Twenty-six years separated the brothers.

Dominic remembered Julian at twenty.

Tall.

Laughing.

Always arguing.

Always promising Dominic that someday they would leave their father’s shadow.

Now Julian was forty-six.

His hair had gone silver near the temples.

There were scars along one cheek.

Blood soaked his shirt.

But the eyes were unchanged.

“You look terrible,” Julian said.

Dominic stared.

“That’s what you say?”

“What would you prefer?”

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

Julian’s expression softened.

“I know.”

“You let Mother bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let me believe our enemies burned you alive.”

Julian lowered his gaze.

Noah squeezed his hand.

Dominic almost lost control.

“Get away from my son.”

Noah immediately wrapped both arms around Julian.

“No.”

The word stopped Dominic.

Julian gently touched the boy’s hair.

“He found me.”

Clara descended with Marcus.

Sophie remained upstairs with Lydia.

“How?” Dominic demanded.

Julian pointed toward the tunnel.

“This shelter connects to an old utility passage beneath the property. I entered two nights ago.”

“You’ve been inside my house?”

“Yes.”

“Watching us?”

“Watching Hargrove.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“You’re always watching.”

Julian accepted the accusation.

“Probably.”

“Were you the one who photographed Noah?”

“No.”

“The shooter in the passage?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“Arthur’s man. He escaped through the same tunnel I used.”

Marcus crouched near Julian’s wound.

“You need a doctor.”

“I’ve had worse.”

Dominic snapped.

“That doesn’t make this less stupid.”

Julian almost smiled.

“There’s my little brother.”

Dominic punched him.

Hard.

Julian fell against the wall.

Noah screamed.

Clara grabbed Dominic’s arm.

“Enough!”

“He abandoned us.”

“And punching a wounded man in front of Noah fixes it?”

Dominic looked at his son.

Noah was shaking.

Dominic stepped back.

Julian wiped blood from his mouth.

“I deserved that.”

“No,” Clara said. “You didn’t. He just needed to do it.”

Dominic glared at her.

She shrugged.

“What? Both things can be true.”

They moved upstairs.

A doctor treated Julian in Elena’s sitting room.

There, he finally told the full story.

Vittorio Vale had been more dangerous than Dominic remembered.

He controlled judges.

Police commanders.

Union leaders.

Politicians.

When Julian tried to expose him, federal investigators warned that the entire family could become targets.

Vittorio offered Julian a deal.

Disappear forever.

Or Dominic and their mother would pay for his betrayal.

“So you chose us,” Dominic said.

“I thought I did.”

“You should have told me later.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“After Father died.”

Dominic frowned.

“I never heard from you.”

“Hargrove intercepted the message.”

Silence.

Julian continued.

“She believed keeping us apart was necessary. By then she had built her identity around preserving my mission.”

“Your mission?”

“Destroying Father’s criminal network.”

Dominic laughed harshly.

“By stealing from me?”

“Your companies inherited his infrastructure.”

“So you decided I was guilty.”

“I decided you were compromised.”

“You never asked.”

“No.”

Julian looked ashamed.

“I stopped seeing you as my brother. You became a symbol.”

Clara watched Dominic absorb the words.

“You were wrong,” Julian said.

Dominic did not answer.

“No,” Julian continued. “You’ve done terrible things. I know enough to say that.”

Marcus shifted uncomfortably.

Dominic remained still.

“But you also moved many of Father’s operations into legitimate industries. You stopped narcotics trafficking. You ended several protection schemes. You paid families Father destroyed.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve been watching for twenty-six years.”

Dominic’s mouth twisted.

“Convenient.”

Julian nodded.

“Very.”

Noah climbed onto the sofa between them.

The brothers looked down.

He held one of Elena’s photographs.

“Mommy.”

Dominic’s expression softened instantly.

Julian swallowed.

“She saved me.”

Dominic looked up.

“What?”

“The night she died.”

Julian explained.

He had arranged a driver to take Elena and Noah to a safe location.

Hargrove rerouted the car.

When Julian realized, he followed.

He reached the ambush after the first shots.

Elena was injured but alive.

Noah was hiding beneath the rear seat.

Julian tried to pull them out.

Hargrove’s men fired.

“Elena shoved Noah toward me,” Julian said.

Dominic’s eyes filled.

“She told me to save him.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“I tried.”

Julian’s voice broke.

“Hargrove hit me from behind. I woke near the river. By the time I returned, police were there.”

Dominic looked furious.

“You knew Noah had been in the car.”

“Yes.”

“And you still disappeared.”

“I believed if Hargrove thought Noah remembered, she would kill him. So I let everyone believe he hadn’t been there.”

Clara whispered, “But she knew.”

Julian nodded.

“She found out months later.”

“And drugged him.”

“Yes.”

Dominic turned away.

“Why not tell me?”

“Because I thought you would start a war.”

“I would have.”

“I know.”

“You decided for me.”

“Yes.”

“You all did.”

That sentence silenced the room.

His father.

Julian.

Elena.

Hargrove.

Everyone had chosen secrets in the name of protecting someone.

Noah had paid the price.

Julian reached inside his coat.

He removed a small digital recorder.

“Elena said something before she died.”

Dominic froze.

“You recorded her?”

“My phone did.”

He placed it on the table.

For twenty-six months, Julian had not listened to it again.

Dominic pressed play.

Wind.

Distant gunfire.

Julian shouting.

Then Elena’s weak voice.

“Dominic needs to know.”

Julian said, “Save your strength.”

“No.”

“Elena—”

“Tell him… I was leaving.”

Dominic’s face changed.

Clara looked at him.

Elena continued.

“Not him.”

A long breath.

“I was leaving the house… because Hargrove knew.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“Tell Dominic I loved him.”

Another breath.

“And tell Noah…”

The recording became faint.

Dominic leaned closer.

“…none of this was his fault.”

The file ended.

Noah stared at the recorder.

“Mommy?”

Dominic pulled his son into his arms.

He cried silently.

Not like a dangerous man.

Like a husband.

Like a father.

Julian looked away.

Clara did too.

After several minutes, Dominic wiped his face.

“What happens now?”

Julian answered.

“Hargrove and Keller know enough to destroy you.”

“They’re arrested.”

“They prepared insurance.”

“What kind?”

“Financial records. Murders. Bribes. Your father’s crimes mixed with yours.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Mine?”

“Some legitimate. Some forged.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus entered with urgent news.

“We do.”

He placed a tablet on the table.

News alerts were exploding across every Chicago station.

VALE EMPIRE LINKED TO DECADES OF ORGANIZED CRIME.

LEAKED FILES IMPLICATE DOMINIC VALE.

FEDERAL AGENTS RAID VALE CORPORATE OFFICES.

Dominic read silently.

His phone began ringing.

Then Marcus received another message.

His face changed.

“What?”

“The district attorney issued warrants.”

“For Keller?”

Marcus looked at him.

“For you.”

Outside, sirens approached the estate.

Dominic glanced at Noah.

Then Sophie.

Then his brother.

For years, Dominic had believed power meant never allowing anyone to put you in a corner.

Now the entire world was closing around him.

May you like

And for the first time, he chose not to run.

“Open the gates,” he said.
