Chapter 12 - The Vault Under WabashThe Marlowe Club was chaos wrapped in velvet.

Sprinklers hissed from the ceiling. Emergency lights flashed red. Men shouted over alarms. Somewhere behind the walls, sirens approached.

Emma moved low, clutching the stolen radio.

She had no gun. No plan good enough to count. Only adrenaline, anger, and the memory of her mother telling her that courage was not the absence of fear.

It was deciding something else mattered more.

She found Dominic near the vault corridor.

He was behind an overturned table with Cole, returning fire toward the lounge. His face changed when he saw her.

Not anger.

Terror.

“Emma!”

She slid behind the table. “Before you yell, Moretti is leaving east with the ledger.”

Dominic stared at her. “You came inside?”

“I said before you yell.”

Cole, bleeding from a cut near his temple, said, “I’m going to resign emotionally.”

Dominic grabbed Emma’s shoulders. “Listen to me. You cannot—”

She held up the radio. “East exit. Service hall. Two men with Moretti.”

Dominic looked at Cole.

Cole nodded. “She’s right.”

Dominic closed his eyes once, as if praying for patience he knew he would not receive.

Then he handed Emma to Cole. “Stay with him.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“The ledger proves everything.”

“You are worth more than evidence.”

The words hit her hard.

For a second, the chaos faded.

Dominic seemed to realize what he had said only after it left him.

Emma’s voice softened. “Then let’s make sure nobody else has to prove their worth by surviving men like Moretti.”

They moved together.

Through the service hall.

Down concrete steps.

Past a kitchen where terrified staff hid behind steel counters.

At the east exit, Moretti stood with Adrian.

That was the first surprise.

The second was Detective Harris on his knees, blood on his forehead, hands zip-tied behind him.

The third was the flash drive in Adrian’s hand.

Moretti smiled when Dominic appeared. “Family reunions are so emotional.”

Dominic’s gun lifted.

Adrian pressed his weapon to Harris’s head.

Emma stopped breathing.

“Drop it,” Adrian said.

Dominic did.

The gun clattered across the floor.

Adrian’s gaze slid to Emma. “You again.”

Emma smiled tightly. “I’m persistent.”

“You’re annoying.”

“I contain multitudes.”

Moretti’s patience snapped. “Enough. Dominic, you built an empire and then developed a conscience. Do you know how insulting that is to men who still understand business?”

Dominic’s voice was steady. “You lost.”

Moretti laughed. “No. I leave with the ledger. Adrian takes your seat. The detective dies tragically in a gang dispute. The waitress becomes a cautionary tale.”

Emma’s eyes moved to the ceiling.

Sprinklers.

Red lights.

Security camera near the door.

Camera.

She remembered Sarah posting the video. Public pressure. Witnesses.

Visibility.

Emma slowly lifted the stolen radio and pressed the side button twice.

Not to speak.

To transmit.

The small red light blinked.

Moretti kept talking.

He confessed without realizing it.

Harris saw what she was doing. His expression did not change, but his eyes sharpened.

Dominic saw too.

So did Adrian.

His face twisted. “She’s broadcasting.”

Everything happened fast.

Adrian lunged for Emma.

Dominic lunged for Adrian.

Moretti ran.

Harris kicked backward, knocking Adrian’s aim aside. Cole tackled one of Moretti’s men. Emma ran after Moretti down the service corridor.

She had no hope of overpowering him.

But she knew restaurants.

She knew wet floors, storage racks, grease traps, and the fact that powerful men rarely looked down.

Moretti shoved through the kitchen.

Emma grabbed a container of cooking oil from a prep station and hurled it across the tile ahead of him.

He slipped hard.

The flash drive flew from his hand.

Emma dove for it.

Moretti grabbed her ankle.

Pain shot up her leg.

“You stupid girl,” he snarled.

Emma kicked him in the face with her borrowed heel.

“Waitress,” she snapped.

Dominic arrived behind him.

One look at Emma on the floor beneath Moretti’s hand, and the old Dominic Vale appeared.

The deadly one.

The one built from fire and graves.

Emma saw it.

More importantly, Dominic saw her seeing it.

His fist clenched.

Moretti smiled through blood. “Do it. Show her.”

Dominic stood over him, shaking with restraint.

Emma held his gaze.

Not pleading for Moretti.

Pleading for Dominic.

“Don’t let him choose who you are,” she whispered.

Sirens filled the hall.

Harris appeared with officers.

Dominic stepped back.

Moretti screamed curses as police dragged him up.

Adrian tried to run.

Elena blocked the exit with her cane, face pale and fierce.

“You always were slow,” she said.

Adrian stopped.

Cole appeared behind him.

“Hands,” Cole said.

Adrian looked at Dominic, hatred burning in his eyes.

Dominic did not look away.

But he did not move toward him either.

For the first time in his adult life, Dominic Vale let the law take someone from him alive.

Emma knew what it cost.

And what it saved.
