Chapter 8 - The Secret Inside Her Sewing MachineBy six that evening, the wedding had become a crime scene.

Nearly four hundred wedding guests stood trapped beneath crystal chandeliers while men with weapons emerged from hidden passages along the ballroom walls.

The string quartet abandoned their instruments.

Women clutched husbands.

Politicians stopped pretending they were powerful.

At the center of the room, Sofia Rossi cried silently while Adrian Vale kept a pistol near her temple.

Elena took one step forward.

“Let her go.”

Vale smiled.

“Not yet.”

Sofia was forty-three now.

A mother herself.

But Elena saw the six-year-old who used to sleep curled against her after nightmares about her missing father.

“Mom, don’t—”

Vale pressed the weapon closer.

“Quiet.”

Luca stared at Enzo.

His father appeared almost skeletal, yet his eyes remained sharp.

“You’re alive.”

“Observant.”

“I carried your coffin.”

“A regrettable theatrical necessity.”

Salvatore stepped into the aisle.

“Enzo.”

For the first time, the old man in the wheelchair showed emotion.

“Little brother.”

Salvatore’s hands trembled.

“You let me bury you.”

“You helped create the circumstances that made it necessary.”

“Because you became insane.”

Enzo laughed weakly.

“Power always looks like insanity to people who lack the courage to use it.”

Luca approached.

Marco whispered, “Boss, no.”

Enzo’s armed men raised their weapons.

Luca stopped.

“You ordered Daniel Rossi taken.”

“Yes.”

Elena’s stomach twisted.

“Why?”

Enzo finally looked at her.

“Because your husband was brilliant and sentimental. A disastrous combination.”

“You stole twenty-seven years from us.”

“He stole something from me first.”

“The archive key?”

“The future.”

Enzo looked toward the fragments.

“The network Daniel built could have made our family untouchable for generations. Instead, he divided the access key and vanished.”

“You imprisoned him.”

“For a time.”

Sofia sobbed.

“Where is my father?”

Enzo smiled.

“A better question.”

Elena clenched her fists.

“Where is Daniel?”

“Close.”

Luca looked around.

“You planned this wedding.”

“No.”

Enzo’s gaze shifted toward Carlo DeLuca.

“Carlo did.”

Carlo’s face went pale.

Vivienne turned toward her father.

“What?”

Carlo shook his head.

“Don’t listen.”

Enzo laughed.

“Still lying to your daughter?”

Vivienne stepped away from Carlo.

“You arranged my marriage?”

“It was strategic.”

“You knew Luca’s father was alive?”

Carlo said nothing.

Her eyes filled.

“You knew I was being used.”

“I protected you.”

“You traded me.”

“No.”

“You built my entire life around a deal.”

Carlo reached for her.

She slapped his hand away.

Enzo enjoyed every second.

“Family loyalty,” he said. “Such a charming fiction.”

Luca’s voice was cold.

“What do you want?”

“The twelve fragments.”

“Then release Sofia.”

“After the archive opens.”

Elena looked at the transparent strips.

“What happens when it opens?”

Enzo smiled.

“Every secret in the eastern United States becomes mine again.”

Salvatore shouted.

“No.”

Several guns aimed at him.

He ignored them.

“You don’t understand. The system is twenty-seven years old. Daniel changed it after you took him.”

Enzo’s expression darkened.

“How would you know?”

“Because I helped him escape.”

Silence.

Elena turned.

“You?”

Salvatore looked at her.

“I couldn’t undo what we had done, but I could give him one chance.”

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

“Why didn’t he come home?”

“Because Vale caught him before he reached you.”

Vale smiled.

“Almost.”

Elena stared at Vale.

“You had him for twelve years?”

“Not continuously.”

“Where is he?”

Vale said nothing.

Enzo’s patience ended.

“Give me the key.”

Elena held the fragments tighter.

“No.”

Vale cocked the pistol against Sofia’s head.

Sofia whimpered.

Enzo leaned forward.

“You are a seamstress, Mrs. Rossi. You are standing among people who have ruled cities while you repaired their sleeves. Do not confuse one fortunate discovery with power.”

Elena looked at him.

“You made the same mistake my whole life.”

“What mistake?”

“You assume invisible means helpless.”

She opened her fist.

Eleven fragments lay in her palm.

Enzo frowned.

“Eleven?”

Everyone stared.

Luca looked at Elena.

Where was the twelfth?

Elena smiled faintly.

“When I cut Marco’s stitch, I didn’t put his piece with the others.”

Marco understood.

“It’s still in her sleeve.”

Enzo’s expression hardened.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

Vale pushed Sofia forward.

Elena’s courage nearly broke.

Her daughter cried.

“Mom, please.”

Elena slowly reached into her sleeve.

Then another voice rang through the ballroom.

“Don’t.”

Elena froze.

A man stepped from behind the musicians’ gallery.

Gray hair.

Scarred temple.

Thin frame.

Daniel Rossi.

Alive.

Sofia screamed.

“Dad?”

Elena could not move.

Daniel looked at her.

Twenty-seven years.

Twenty-seven birthdays.

Twenty-seven anniversaries.

Twenty-seven Christmas mornings with one chair that never stopped feeling empty.

He was older.

Broken in places she could see.

But alive.

“Elena.”

Her name in his real voice nearly destroyed her.

Vale spun his gun toward Daniel.

Daniel raised both hands.

“Shoot me and you lose the archive.”

Enzo’s face changed.

“You.”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“Still breathing, Enzo?”

Luca looked between them.

“How did you get inside?”

Daniel pointed upward.

“I built half the security systems in this house.”

Vale snapped.

“You were supposed to be at the compound.”

“I left.”

“How?”

“Your people are predictable.”

Enzo’s voice trembled with rage.

“You ruined everything.”

Daniel looked at Elena.

“No.”

His eyes filled.

“I ruined one thing.”

He swallowed.

“My family.”

Elena shook her head through tears.

“Not now.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Not now, Daniel.”

He nodded.

“Right.”

His eyes shifted toward Sofia.

“Vale.”

Vale tightened his grip on her.

“Stay where you are.”

Daniel reached into his coat.

Weapons lifted.

He slowly withdrew a small remote.

“You know what this is.”

Vale’s expression changed.

Enzo whispered, “No.”

Daniel smiled.

“The archive failsafe.”

Luca frowned.

“What does it do?”

“Deletes everything.”

Enzo shouted.

“You wouldn’t.”

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You took my wife. My daughter. My life.”

“I gave you purpose.”

“You gave me a cage.”

Daniel lifted the remote.

“Release Sofia.”

Enzo looked at Vale.

“No.”

“Then I erase it.”

“You won’t.”

Daniel pressed his thumb against the button.

Screens throughout the ballroom suddenly illuminated.

A countdown appeared.

60

Enzo’s face became monstrous.

“STOP HIM!”

Gunfire erupted.

Guests screamed and dropped.

Marco shoved Luca behind a marble pillar.

Elena crawled toward Sofia.

Vale fired at Daniel.

Daniel fell.

“Elena!” Sofia screamed.

Elena reached her daughter as Vale turned.

Before he could shoot, Vivienne smashed a champagne bottle across his wrist.

The gun flew.

Luca lunged.

He tackled Vale.

Marco’s men engaged Enzo’s guards.

The countdown continued.

42

Elena crawled to Daniel.

Blood soaked his shoulder.

“Daniel.”

“I’m okay.”

“You’re shot!”

“I’ve had worse.”

“You idiot.”

He smiled weakly.

“I missed that.”

She pressed her hand against the wound.

Across the room, Enzo shouted.

“The key! Someone get the key!”

Salvatore grabbed the eleven fragments from the floor.

Carlo DeLuca tackled him.

They crashed into a table.

Vivienne stared at her father.

“Dad!”

Carlo struck Salvatore.

The fragments scattered.

31

Luca wrestled Vale to the floor.

A shot fired.

Vale stopped moving.

Nobody knew who had fired it.

Marco kicked the gun away.

“Luca!”

24

Daniel grabbed Elena’s hand.

“Listen.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No more goodbye speeches.”

“It’s not goodbye.”

He looked toward the screen.

“The countdown is fake.”

She stared.

“What?”

“I needed Enzo to panic.”

“You—”

“I’m sorry.”

She punched him in the good shoulder.

He groaned.

“You deserved that.”

Across the ballroom, Enzo screamed at his men.

“GET THE PIECES!”

Everyone scrambled.

Carlo gathered several fragments.

Salvatore grabbed others.

Marco collected one.

Vivienne found another beneath her dress.

The screen reached:

Enzo shouted in terror.

The screens went black.

Nothing happened.

Daniel laughed weakly.

Enzo realized.

“You tricked me.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“No.”

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

“I made you reveal everyone who works for you.”

A dozen guests who had tried to help Enzo stood frozen.

Marco’s guards immediately surrounded them.

Senator Reed.

Judge Harper.

Two executives.

A police commander.

And Carlo DeLuca.

Vivienne stared at her father.

Carlo slowly raised his hands.

Enzo’s organization had just exposed itself.

But Enzo began laughing.

Luca looked toward him.

“What’s funny?”

Enzo lifted one trembling finger toward Daniel.

“You still don’t understand.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Enzo whispered:

“The archive isn’t beneath this house anymore.”

Daniel went pale.

“Where is it?”

Enzo smiled.

“Ask your wife.”

Everyone looked at Elena.

She frowned.

“What?”

Enzo’s smile widened.

“You have carried the master archive for twenty-seven years.”

And suddenly Elena remembered the one object Daniel had given her before disappearing.

Her old sewing machine.

May you like

The machine still sitting in her apartment.

The machine she had used almost every day since the night he vanished.
