Chapter 19 - The Choice Nicolás MakesNicolás called a meeting one month after Mateo’s recovery.

Not in the formal dining room.
Not in the office where men had made threats for decades.
In the stripped clean library where Mateo had first slept without pain.
Present were Valeria, Leonor, Esteban, Sofía, the legal team, the head of security, and three senior executives from Velasco International who looked deeply uncomfortable sitting beneath shelves of children’s cotton blankets.
Nicolás stood at the front.
Mateo sat in Valeria’s lap, healthy cheeks full, legs kicking.
Sofía stood near the window, uncertain why she had been asked to attend.
Nicolás looked at the executives first.
“Velasco International will end all private enforcement contracts not subject to public legal oversight.”
One executive coughed.
“Señor, that is a significant portion of—”
“I know.”
Another leaned forward. “Some partners will consider this betrayal.”
“Yes.”
“They may retaliate.”
Nicolás’s face remained calm.
“Then we prepare legally.”
The men exchanged glances.
Legally was not a word they expected from him.
Leonor watched her son with unreadable eyes.
Nicolás continued, “The security division will be restructured under compliance review. Any client tied to trafficking, coercion, or unlawful intimidation is terminated.”
The room went silent.
This was not charity.
This was amputation.
Sofía understood before many of them did.
Nicolás was not trying to look clean.
He was cutting away the parts of his empire that made Rafael’s accusations believable.
He was choosing what kind of father Mateo would one day discover.
Valeria’s eyes filled.
One executive said, “Your father built—”
“My father is dead,” Nicolás said. “My son is not.”
No one argued after that.
When the meeting ended, Sofía remained by the window.
Nicolás approached.
“You did not have to include me.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Why?”
“Because you asked what kind of man I am when no one is forcing me.”
“And this is your answer?”
“This is the beginning of it.”
She looked at him.
The man before her was still dangerous. Still powerful. Still carrying shadows that would not vanish because of one decision.
But he was also changing.
Not for her.
Not entirely for Mateo.
For himself.
That mattered.
“People will come after you,” she said.
“They already did.”
“More will.”
“I know.”
“Are you afraid?”
He looked toward Mateo, who was trying to eat Valeria’s necklace while Leonor looked scandalized.
“Yes.”
Sofía smiled softly.
“Good.”
He looked back at her.
“Good?”
“Fear means you understand what you have to lose.”
His voice lowered.
“I understand that very well.”
The space between them tightened.
This time, Sofía did not step away.
He reached into his jacket and removed an envelope.
Her expression changed.
“If that is money—”
“It is not.”
He handed it to her.
Inside was a deed.
Not to a mansion.
Not a car.
A small clinic building near General Hospital, currently abandoned but structurally sound.
Sofía stared.
“Nicolás.”
“It is in the name of a foundation,” he said quickly, before she could refuse. “Not yours. Not mine. The board includes Dr. Torres, two public hospital physicians, Valeria, and, if you accept, you.”
She looked up.
“A clinic?”
“For children with environmental illness, skin conditions, and families who cannot afford fifteen specialists.”
Her eyes burned.
He continued, “You once said poor women are called wise only after they die. I would prefer they be listened to while alive.”
Sofía looked away, overcome.
“Nicolás, this is too much.”
“No,” he said. “The nursery cost more than the renovation estimate.”
That made her laugh through tears.
He smiled then.
Fully.
It changed his face so much she almost forgot to breathe.
“I am not buying you,” he said softly. “I am building something beside you, only if you choose to stand there.”
Sofía held the deed with trembling fingers.
“You are learning.”
“I have an excellent teacher.”
She shook her head.
“Do not make me holy.”
“I won’t.”
“Do not make me your redemption.”
“I won’t.”
“Do not lie to me.”
“Never.”
She believed him.
Not because he was incapable of lying.
Because he had finally learned what truth cost.
Mateo squealed from across the room.
Everyone turned.
The baby had pulled Leonor’s pearl necklace loose despite her attempt to avoid jewelry around him.
Pearls scattered across the cotton mat.
Leonor gasped.
Mateo laughed.
Valeria laughed.
Esteban covered his mouth.
Even Nicolás laughed.
Sofía watched them all and felt something inside her loosen.
The mansion was still too big.
The family still too complicated.
May you like
The past still too heavy.
But for the first time, she could imagine walking through its doors without feeling swallowed.
