Chapter 12 - The First DanceSix months later, snow covered the DeLuca estate.

Recorded eight years earlier.

Bianca sat opposite Dr. Ames inside what appeared to be Saint Catherine's administrative office.

Luca watched it beside Matteo.

Neither spoke.

On-screen, Ames slid a folder across the desk.

"If Elena continues digging, Vittorio will remove her."

Bianca looked horrified.

"You mean kill her."

"Those are your words."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Convince Elena to stop."

"I tried."

"Then convince Luca to send her away."

"He won't."

"Then you have a choice."

Bianca stared.

Ames leaned forward.

"Your sons or your daughter-in-law."

The recording skipped.

Then Bianca said:

"Save Luca."

Luca stopped the video.

Matteo looked at him.

Neither breathed.

"She chose us."

Luca whispered.

Matteo shook his head.

"We don't know what happened after."

But they both knew enough.

Bianca had been given an impossible choice.

And she had chosen her sons.

Luca restarted the video.

Bianca was crying now.

"Promise me Elena won't suffer."

Ames said nothing.

"Promise me."

"Caroline."

"Promise me."

Ames answered quietly.

"It will look natural."

Luca turned away.

His stomach twisted.

Bianca had not administered the poison.

She had not killed Elena with her own hands.

But she had consented.

There was no gentler interpretation.

Matteo paused the video.

"I can't watch."

Luca understood.

But he continued.

After Elena's death, Bianca appeared again.

This time furious.

"You said she would be sent away."

Ames remained calm.

"I said we'd solve the problem."

"You lied."

"You heard what you wanted to hear."

Bianca slapped her.

Ames barely reacted.

Then Bianca threatened to go to Luca.

Ames showed photographs of young Luca and Matteo.

Cars.

Homes.

Schedules.

Bianca's defiance collapsed.

The rest of their history began there.

Blackmail.

Control.

Fear.

Complicity.

Luca stopped the video.

Matteo sat with his head in his hands.

"Our mother chose Elena to die."

Luca stared at the blank screen.

"Yes."

"But she saved us."

"Yes."

"And then destroyed Emilia."

"Yes."

Nothing was clean.

No hero.

No single villain.

Just people choosing smaller evils until they couldn't see the difference.

Bianca was still in the hospital.

Luca went alone.

She knew before he spoke.

"They found the video."

He nodded.

Bianca looked toward the window.

"I wondered whether Caroline kept it."

"Why would she?"

"Leverage."

Of course.

"Did you know Elena would die?"

Bianca closed her eyes.

"I knew it was possible."

"That's not what the video shows."

"I told myself Caroline meant exile."

"But you asked her not to let Elena suffer."

Bianca began crying.

"I knew."

Luca stood completely still.

His mother whispered.

"I knew enough."

He wanted to hate her.

Perhaps part of him always would.

But hatred seemed too simple now.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I would have lost you."

"You lost me anyway."

Bianca nodded.

"I know."

Luca sat beside her.

For several minutes neither spoke.

Then Bianca whispered, "Is Emilia walking?"

"Yes."

A faint smile.

"I'm glad."

"She asked about you."

Bianca's expression broke.

"What did you tell her?"

"That you were recovering."

"You didn't tell her?"

"She's eight."

Bianca nodded.

"Thank you."

"Don't."

Luca's voice sharpened.

"This isn't forgiveness."

"I know."

"I don't know if I will ever forgive you."

"I know."

"But I also won't teach my daughter that love means pretending harm never happened."

Bianca stared at him.

Luca continued.

"When you're discharged, you won't return to the estate."

Her face tightened.

"I understand."

"You will cooperate with federal investigators."

"Yes."

"You will testify."

"Yes."

"You will tell the truth."

"All of it."

"And after that?"

Bianca looked toward the window.

"I don't know."

Neither did Luca.

Some endings weren't punishments or reconciliations.

Sometimes consequences simply began.

Outside the hospital, Anna waited.

Her father stood beside her.

Marco had shaved his priest's beard.

He looked different.

More like the photographs Anna remembered from childhood.

She had not forgiven him either.

But they were talking.

That was something.

Luca approached.

"How is she?" Anna asked.

"Alive."

Anna understood what he meant.

More complicated than medical condition.

"Emilia is asking for you."

They returned to the rehabilitation center.

Emilia was painting at a table.

Her wheelchair sat folded in the corner.

She still needed it for long distances.

Dr. Brooks expected months of rehabilitation.

Possibly years before her strength fully returned.

But there was no paralysis.

The word itself had been removed from her chart.

Emilia looked up.

"Anna!"

Anna smiled.

"Hey, sweetheart."

Emilia ran three uneven steps toward her.

Anna immediately crouched.

Emilia wrapped her arms around her neck.

Luca watched.

This was the moment that had begun everything.

A crowded ballroom.

His daughter running toward the woman everyone had tried to erase.

Now he understood why.

Anna was safety.

Before drugs.

Before conditioning.

Before lies.

Her arms had carried Emilia from fire.

Her voice had existed in the child's earliest memories.

Perhaps the mind forgot details.

The body did not always forget kindness.

Emilia looked at Luca.

"Can Anna live with us?"

Anna's eyes widened.

Luca almost smiled.

"That's a very big question."

"I have a big room."

"You have toys everywhere."

"I can clean."

Anna laughed.

Luca hadn't heard that sound often.

Emilia looked between them.

"Please?"

Anna touched her hair.

"Your dad and I need to talk about some grown-up things."

Emilia groaned.

"Grown-up things take forever."

She wasn't wrong.

That night, Luca and Anna sat outside the rehabilitation center.

No guards within earshot.

No family.

No secrets.

"Emilia loves you," Luca said.

"I love her."

"I know."

Anna looked down.

"I should have come back sooner."

"Vittorio threatened your family."

"I still left her."

"You were afraid."

Anna smiled sadly.

"Apparently that's the theme."

Luca looked toward the windows.

"I don't want fear making decisions anymore."

Anna looked at him.

"Then what will?"

"I don't know."

He thought.

"Maybe truth."

Anna smiled.

"That's harder."

"Apparently."

They sat quietly.

Then Luca said, "I'm leaving the organization."

Anna stared.

"What?"

"Matteo and I agreed."

"What does leaving mean for someone like you?"

"Complicated."

"Meaning?"

"Legitimate companies remain. Everything else gets dismantled or handed over to authorities."

"You realize people may come after you."

"Yes."

"You're doing it because of Emilia?"

"Partly."

He looked at her.

"Mostly because I found out my father wanted the same thing."

Carlo had tried to end the cycle.

Failed.

Luca would try again.

Anna nodded slowly.

"Then don't fail."

He smiled.

"Very comforting."

"I wasn't trying to be comforting."

"No."

He looked at her.

"You're rarely comforting."

She laughed.

Then his phone rang.

Matteo.

Luca answered.

"What?"

His brother sounded strange.

"We found Vittorio's final account."

"Money?"

"Not exactly."

"What?"

"A list."

Luca's stomach tightened.

"Of what?"

"Names of everyone who helped Ames."

"How many?"

Matteo paused.

"Forty-seven."

Luca closed his eyes.

One last cleanup.

Not with bullets.

With evidence.

With courts.

With exposure.

For once, consequences would be public.

Matteo continued.

"And Luca?"

"What?"

"One name is still active."

"Who?"

Matteo answered.

Luca's expression changed.

Anna noticed.

"What is it?"

Luca ended the call.

He looked toward Emilia's window.

"There was one more person reporting on her."

Anna stood.

"Who?"

May you like

Luca stared at the building.

"Her physical therapist."
