Chapter 10 - The Last SecretLauren waited until Mia was asleep.

A call placed at 3:47 a.m.

Answered.

Not voicemail.

Not disconnected.

Forty-two seconds.

Daniel remembered sleeping in a chair inside Vanessa’s hotel suite.

His phone had been on the nightstand charging.

Vanessa claimed she had slept in the bedroom.

But someone had answered.

Police obtained hotel security footage.

At 3:39 a.m., Vanessa was awake.

At 3:43, she walked from the bedroom into the sitting area.

At 3:51, she returned.

Daniel watched the footage with investigators.

No audio.

But the timeline was undeniable.

Detective Moran leaned back.

“She had access.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

“If the hospital employee remembers who answered…”

“Five years is a long time.”

“But they documented the call.”

“We’re working on identifying the employee.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“What can she be charged with?”

“That depends on evidence and jurisdiction. The bribery and unauthorized record issues are clearer. What she said or did with your phone requires proof.”

Daniel looked at the frozen image of Vanessa standing beside the nightstand.

“She answered.”

Moran said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She knew my daughter lived.”

“We need evidence.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Daniel looked at him.

The detective’s voice softened.

“Because anger makes people want certainty faster than facts can provide it.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

That night, he went to Lauren’s apartment.

Mia was building a blanket fort.

“Daddy!”

The word still stopped his heart.

She ran toward him.

“Shoes off.”

“What?”

“Fort rule.”

Daniel removed his shoes.

“Any other regulations?”

“No boring people.”

He glanced at Lauren.

“She’s in trouble.”

Lauren smiled.

“Get in the fort.”

Daniel crawled beneath a sheet draped between the couch and dining chairs.

Mia had arranged flashlights, books, crackers, and Bubbles the dragon inside.

“This is impressive.”

“It has security.”

“What kind?”

Mia pointed at Mr. Henry.

Daniel nodded.

“Terrifying.”

Lauren crawled inside after them.

For an hour, there was no Vanessa.

No investigation.

No attorneys.

Just three people under a blanket eating crackers.

Then Mia fell asleep halfway through a book.

Daniel carried her to bed.

Lauren followed.

He tucked the blanket beneath Mia’s chin.

“Goodnight, sweetheart.”

Mia opened one eye.

“Are you leaving?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Eventually.”

“Why?”

Lauren said softly, “Daddy has his own house.”

Mia frowned.

“He has too many houses.”

Daniel looked offended.

“I have one.”

“You have a big one.”

“That’s still one.”

Mia yawned.

“Sleep here.”

Lauren and Daniel exchanged a look.

“Mia,” Lauren began.

“Please?”

Daniel crouched.

“I can stay until you fall asleep.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Five minutes later, Mia was asleep.

Daniel remained another twenty.

Lauren waited in the living room.

When he emerged, she handed him a glass of water.

“She likes you.”

“I know.”

“That scares me.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“I know.”

“If you disappear now…”

“I won’t.”

“You can’t guarantee that.”

“Yes, I can.”

“No one can.”

“Then I can guarantee effort.”

Lauren looked at him.

“I’ll show up unless something outside my control physically stops me.”

“And if you meet someone?”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“If you build another life.”

He understood.

“You think Mia becomes inconvenient.”

“I think people make promises when they’re emotional.”

Daniel sat.

“So give me a measurable promise.”

Lauren crossed her arms.

“What?”

“Something you can hold me to.”

“This isn’t a contract.”

“Maybe it should be.”

She almost smiled.

Daniel continued.

“I will not cancel plans with Mia for work unless there is an actual emergency. I will not introduce romantic partners to her without discussing it with you. I will not make major decisions involving her without you. I will not use money to override you.”

Lauren raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve thought about this.”

“Every night.”

“And me?”

“What about you?”

“What promise do you want?”

Daniel was quiet.

“I want you to tell me when I’m doing something wrong before deciding I’ll never change.”

Lauren stared at him.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

She looked away.

“I can try.”

“Good.”

His phone rang.

Detective Moran.

Daniel answered.

“We found the hospital employee.”

His heart jumped.

“And?”

“She remembers the call.”

Daniel stood.

Lauren watched.

“What did she say?”

Moran paused.

“The person who answered identified herself as your fiancée.”

Daniel went cold.

“Vanessa.”

“The employee says she doesn’t remember the name, but yes, a woman.”

“What did she tell her?”

“She informed the woman that the earlier infant-death notification was incorrect. Your daughter had survived and been transferred.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Lauren covered her mouth.

Moran continued.

“The woman said you were sedated after a medical emergency and could not come to the phone.”

“I wasn’t.”

“We know.”

“What else?”

“The employee asked her to tell you to contact Boston Children’s immediately.”

Daniel could barely speak.

“And she said she would.”

“Yes.”

The call ended.

Daniel remained standing.

Lauren whispered, “She knew.”

He nodded.

“She knew.”

Five years.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not uncertainty.

Vanessa knew.

Daniel sank onto the couch.

Lauren sat beside him.

He stared forward.

“I left you.”

“Daniel—”

“I left you, and then the hospital called, and she had one chance to undo part of what I’d done.”

His eyes filled.

“She chose not to.”

Lauren reached for his hand.

It was instinct.

Daniel looked down at their fingers.

Then at her.

Lauren almost pulled away.

Instead, she held on.

“You came back eventually,” she said.

“Five years late.”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“But you came back.”

A knock sounded downstairs.

Lauren frowned.

It was nearly ten.

Daniel stood.

“I’ll check.”

He opened the apartment door.

A process server stood outside.

“Daniel Parker?”

“Yes.”

The man handed him an envelope.

Daniel opened it.

His expression changed.

Lauren approached.

“What is it?”

He handed her the page.

A temporary restraining order.

Filed by Vanessa.

She alleged Daniel had threatened her, harassed her, and used his wealth and corporate influence to destroy her career.

Lauren read the final paragraph.

Then looked at him.

“This is war.”

Daniel folded the paper.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“It’s panic.”

The next morning, Vanessa Reed was arrested.

Not for the phone call.

Not yet.

For bribery, unlawful access to medical records, conspiracy to conceal evidence, and suspected identity fraud connected to the custody filing.

Reporters surrounded the courthouse.

Daniel watched from his office television.

Vanessa emerged in handcuffs.

For the first time in twenty years, she looked small.

Then she saw the cameras.

And smiled.

That afternoon, her attorney released a statement.

Vanessa would fight every charge.

And she was prepared to reveal “deeply damaging information” about Daniel Parker and Lauren Parker’s marriage.

Lauren read the headline twice.

Then her phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

Ask Daniel where he was the week before you gave birth.

May you like

Lauren’s stomach dropped.

The past, apparently, still had another secret left.
