Chapter 9 - The Secret Charles Blackwood Took to His GraveBy sunrise, Richard Sloan was in federal custody.

Ethan crossed Long Island Sound alone in a twenty-four-foot fishing boat that federal agents had deliberately made look unremarkable.
Blackwood Island emerged through fog at 11:38 p.m.
The lighthouse still stood.
Red-and-white stripes faded by decades of salt.
A large stone house sat farther inland.
Several windows glowed.
Ethan carried no visible weapon.
Only the hard drive.
And a microphone hidden inside the seam of his jacket.
Rebecca’s team remained two miles offshore.
Too far to trigger Harlan’s surveillance.
Close enough to move when Ethan gave the signal.
The dock creaked beneath his shoes.
A spotlight activated.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Crane.
Ethan stopped.
The security man’s neck and jaw were bandaged from the flare.
He had escaped federal custody during transport with help from a compromised deputy.
That discovery had confirmed what Ethan already knew.
The conspiracy stretched beyond his family.
Crane searched him.
Removed his phone.
Found no gun.
“You should have killed me when you had the chance,” Crane muttered.
Ethan looked at his burns.
“I considered it.”
Crane shoved him toward the house.
Inside, Noah sat on a sofa.
Victoria held one hand on his shoulder.
Lily slept beside him wrapped in a blanket.
Ethan stopped.
For the first time, he saw his daughter in person.
Not through a phone.
Not in a photograph.
She had Claire’s mouth.
His dark hair.
Tiny fingers curled around the edge of her blanket.
Something inside him nearly collapsed.
Noah jumped up.
“Daddy!”
Victoria pulled him back.
Ethan’s voice hardened.
“Take your hand off him.”
Victoria smiled sadly.
“You always did sound like Charles when you were angry.”
Evelyn Harlan appeared from the hallway.
His half-sister.
Now that he knew, Ethan saw similarities he had missed.
Victoria’s cheekbones.
The same blue-gray eyes.
A slight tilt of the chin.
“You found the records,” Harlan said.
“I found enough.”
“Give them to me.”
“Children first.”
She laughed.
“You’re in no position to negotiate.”
“Neither are you.”
Ethan looked toward Richard Sloan.
Sloan entered behind him.
Fresh bandage across his forehead.
Apparently his federal custody had been equally temporary.
Ethan smiled.
“Uncle Richard.”
“Still making jokes.”
“Still sleeping with my mother?”
Victoria’s face hardened.
Sloan remained calm.
“That was unnecessary.”
“So was murdering my father.”
Harlan stepped closer.
“The drive.”
Ethan held it up.
“You know who you are to me?”
Her expression didn’t change.
“My mother told me years ago.”
“My sister.”
“Half.”
“Does that distinction help when kidnapping your niece and nephew?”
She slapped him.
Ethan didn’t move.
Noah cried out.
Ethan kept his gaze on Harlan.
“That make you feel better?”
Her composure cracked.
“You had everything.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
“You were born a Blackwood.”
The answer surprised him.
“All this because of a name?”
“Do you know where I grew up?”
Sloan looked uncomfortable.
“Evelyn.”
“No.”
She turned toward Ethan.
“I grew up with strangers in Connecticut while Victoria sent checks twice a year.”
Victoria said sharply, “We agreed—”
“You agreed!”
Harlan’s voice echoed.
“You married Charles because he was rich. Richard joined his company because you both wanted access to what he built. And I was hidden because a child from your affair would ruin the arrangement.”
Ethan looked at his mother.
Victoria’s face had gone pale.
Harlan laughed bitterly.
“Then Ethan was born.”
She pointed at him.
“The legitimate heir.”
For the first time, Ethan understood Harlan’s rage.
Not justified.
But real.
Richard stepped forward.
“We built Meridian so Evelyn would have something.”
“You stole billions.”
“Charles would never have given her a share.”
“She wasn’t his child.”
“She was Victoria’s!”
Richard lost control.
“For thirty years I watched another man raise sons inside a house that should have included my daughter.”
Ethan stared at him.
“So you killed him.”
Richard became quiet.
“Yes.”
Noah whimpered.
Victoria turned away.
Harlan held out her hand.
“Drive.”
Ethan placed it on the table.
Crane connected it to a laptop.
A password field appeared.
“What’s the password?” Harlan asked.
“Release my children.”
“No.”
“Then enjoy your blank screen.”
Harlan pointed a gun toward Noah.
Ethan’s entire body tightened.
“Password.”
He stared at her.
“BlackwoodNine.”
Crane typed it.
Files appeared.
Thousands.
Harlan smiled.
Then she noticed a digital clock in the corner.
00:14:22.
Counting down.
“What is that?”
Ethan said nothing.
“What did you do?”
“Insurance.”
Crane clicked frantically.
A message appeared.
ARCHIVE DISTRIBUTION ACTIVE. CANCELLATION REQUIRES BIOMETRIC AUTHORIZATION.
Harlan looked at Ethan.
“Cancel it.”
“No.”
She pointed the gun at Lily.
Victoria grabbed her wrist.
“No!”
Everyone froze.
Harlan stared at her mother.
Victoria’s voice trembled.
“Not the baby.”
“You threatened them yourself.”
“I threatened.”
Victoria looked toward Noah.
“I never intended—”
Richard laughed.
“You always were weak when it mattered.”
Victoria turned.
“Shut up.”
Richard stepped closer.
“This entire mess exists because you panicked when Charles found the accounts.”
“You poisoned him.”
“Evelyn did.”
Harlan’s face changed.
“Because you told me to.”
Richard stopped.
Victoria stared at them.
Years of buried resentment exploded.
Ethan listened.
Every word traveled through the microphone in his jacket.
Confessions.
Names.
Murder.
Kidnapping.
Fraud.
Rebecca was recording everything.
Harlan grabbed Ethan’s collar.
“Cancel it!”
“No.”
“Ten minutes.”
“No.”
“I will kill someone.”
Ethan looked directly at her.
“If you shoot Noah or Lily, you still go to prison and the files still release.”
Harlan’s hand shook.
“You think I care about prison?”
“No.”
Ethan glanced at Victoria.
“I think she does.”
Victoria went still.
He continued.
“She has spent her entire life protecting her name.”
Richard understood first.
“Victoria.”
Ethan smiled.
“The files include everything. Your affair. Evelyn’s birth. Dad’s murder. The money.”
Victoria’s breathing changed.
“Cancel it.”
“No.”
“Ethan.”
“For two years, my son believed I abandoned him. Claire lived like a fugitive. Lily grew up with strangers. My father was murdered at his desk.”
He stepped closer.
“You lose the name.”
Victoria whispered, “Please.”
“No.”
Richard drew a gun.
“Then this is finished.”
He aimed at Ethan.
A small voice interrupted.
“Grandpa Charlie said you were bad.”
Everyone turned.
Noah stood beside the sofa.
Richard frowned.
“What?”
Noah reached inside his stuffed rabbit.
Ethan’s heart stopped.
The rabbit Victoria had left at the estate.
Rebecca must have replaced it before Victoria took Noah.
Noah pulled out a tiny black device.
A tracker.
And pressed the button.
Three seconds later, the windows exploded inward.
Federal tactical agents breached from both sides.
“FBI!”
Richard fired.
Ethan tackled Noah.
Victoria grabbed Lily.
Crane reached for his weapon.
A federal agent shot him in the leg.
Harlan ran toward the rear door.
Claire appeared behind the tactical team.
Ethan shouted, “Claire!”
She ignored every order and ran toward Lily.
Victoria stood frozen with the little girl in her arms.
Claire stopped ten feet away.
“Give me my daughter.”
Victoria looked at Lily.
Then at Claire.
For one second, Ethan saw something human inside his mother.
Regret.
Perhaps even shame.
Victoria stepped forward.
Then Richard, wounded but conscious, lifted his gun from the floor.
He aimed at Claire.
Victoria saw him.
“No!”
The gun fired.
Victoria jerked.
She fell.
Lily screamed.
Claire caught the child before she hit the floor.
Ethan lunged at Richard.
Agents pinned Sloan down.
Victoria lay against the wall.
Blood spread across her cream blouse.
Ethan dropped beside her.
Despite everything, his hands tried to stop the bleeding.
She looked at him.
“My son.”
Ethan’s throat tightened.
“You need to stay still.”
“I’m sorry.”
He said nothing.
She looked toward Noah.
Then Lily.
“Your father was right.”
“About what?”
Her lips trembled.
“Blood is expensive.”
Paramedics rushed in.
Across the room, Claire held Lily for the first time in eight months.
Lily touched her mother’s face.
“Mama.”
Claire sobbed.
Ethan looked at the laptop.
The countdown reached zero.
For one second, nothing happened.
Then the screen displayed:
ARCHIVE DISTRIBUTED.
Blackwood’s secrets were no longer hidden.
But Harlan was gone.
May you like
During the chaos, his half-sister had disappeared into the storm.
And she had taken Ethan’s father’s original letter with her.
