Chapter 5 - THE UNCLE WHO HAD BEEN WAITINGThe police placed Richard Bennett under investigation immediately.

It was evidence.
For nearly six hours, she knew Camille had left something meant for her but had no idea what it contained.
Adrian called twice during that period.
The second time, Olivia answered.
“Where is Camille?”
Silence.
Then Adrian said, “Why are you asking me?”
“Her car was found abandoned.”
“What?”
His surprise sounded genuine.
That frightened Olivia more.
“She left me a voicemail about a file.”
Adrian went quiet.
“What file?”
“You tell me.”
“Olivia, listen to me. Camille is unstable.”
“You were planning to replace me with her yesterday.”
“I made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”
“She manipulated me.”
Olivia almost laughed.
“How convenient.”
“I’m serious. I didn’t know about the medical records.”
“Then why did your company pay for them?”
“I approved hundreds of invoices.”
“The firm belongs to Martin Voss.”
Adrian stopped breathing for a second.
Olivia heard it.
“You remember him.”
“Of course I remember him.”
“Why was he accessing my pregnancy records?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why did he have my patient number?”
“I said I don’t know.”
“Why are there photographs of me?”
“I don’t know!”
His voice cracked.
Then softened.
“Liv, please. Whatever you think of me, I would never hurt you or the baby.”
She hated the familiar nickname.
She hated that part of her still reacted to it.
“What were you doing with Camille?”
Another silence.
Finally:
“I was sleeping with her.”
“How long?”
“Eight months.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
Their baby had been conceived seven months ago.
“So while we were trying to have a child.”
“Yes.”
She hung up.
That evening, police released a copy of Camille’s letter.
Jonathan read it first.
His face hardened.
Olivia took it from him.
The handwriting was rushed.
Camille claimed she had begun seeing Adrian because he told her his marriage was effectively over.
He told her Olivia was emotionally unstable.
Controlling.
Dependent.
He claimed the Hawthorne house belonged to him and promised Camille they would live there after the divorce.
None of that surprised Olivia.
Then came the second page.
Camille wrote that she had discovered Adrian was meeting Dr. Voss without telling her.
She became suspicious.
One night, she searched Adrian’s private apartment and found a locked cabinet.
Inside were copied medical files, trust summaries, life insurance documents, photographs, and notes about Olivia’s daily routine.
One page contained projected dates.
Prenatal appointments.
Charity events.
A planned weekend at Olivia’s family lake house.
Beside the lake house date, someone had written:
LOW VISIBILITY. LIMITED STAFF.
Olivia stopped reading.
Jonathan said quietly, “You don’t need to finish.”
“Yes, I do.”
The final paragraph was worse.
Camille claimed she confronted Adrian indirectly but pretended she had seen nothing.
Then, the night she was thrown from Olivia’s house, Camille returned to Adrian’s River North apartment to collect her belongings.
The cabinet had been emptied.
Only one folder remained.
Camille took it.
She wrote:
If anything happens to me, Adrian knows more than he says. But I don’t think he’s the one I’m most afraid of.
Olivia’s fingers tightened.
Below that:
Martin Voss told Adrian, “The old man protected her better than we expected.” I heard it myself.
The “old man” could only mean Olivia’s grandfather.
The next morning, detectives located Camille.
She had not been kidnapped.
She had hidden in a suburban motel under another name after noticing the same black sedan follow her from Adrian’s apartment.
The irony wasn’t lost on anyone.
The mistress who helped destroy Olivia’s marriage had become Olivia’s most important witness.
Police arranged a secure interview.
Olivia chose not to attend.
She did not want revenge against Camille.
She wanted truth.
While investigators worked, Jonathan produced the original amendment to the Bennett trust.
Olivia read every page.
Her grandfather had protected not only the house and corporate shares but also a collection of commercial properties worth nearly ninety million dollars.
Olivia had known she was a beneficiary.
She had never realized how aggressively the trust insulated those assets from spouses.
A handwritten letter had been kept with the documents.
Jonathan finally gave it to her.
It was from her grandfather.
My Liv,
If you are reading this, then something I feared may have happened. Wealth does not always attract evil people. Sometimes it turns ordinary weaknesses into dangerous ones. Adrian may prove me wrong. I hope he does. But I have learned never to gamble a loved one’s safety on hope alone.
Olivia cried before finishing.
Her grandfather wrote that Adrian had repeatedly asked advisers about inheritance structures.
He had also tried to persuade Olivia to merge her trust assets with Cole Development.
She had refused without understanding why the request mattered.
Her grandfather had understood.
Never confuse someone needing you with someone loving you.
Olivia pressed the letter against her chest.
Her grandfather had died believing she was safe because he had protected her money.
But money had not protected her heart.
That afternoon, the forensic audit uncovered another shock.
Adrian had taken out a corporate key-person insurance policy.
The insured person was not Adrian.
It was Olivia.
Coverage: ten million dollars.
Beneficiary: Cole Development Group.
Olivia had never knowingly consented.
Jonathan immediately contacted regulators.
Adrian was called into another emergency board meeting.
This time, he arrived with his own lawyers.
He denied ordering the policy.
His chief financial officer produced an authorization bearing Adrian’s signature.
Adrian stared at it.
“That’s not my signature.”
“It’s electronic.”
“I didn’t approve this.”
The CFO looked confused.
“It came from your account.”
Adrian leaned toward the screen.
Then his expression changed.
“Martin.”
Everyone went silent.
Adrian stood.
“Voss had access.”
Jonathan spoke.
“Why would an outside medical consultant have access to your executive credentials?”
Adrian hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed whatever trust remained.
“Mr. Cole?”
Adrian finally said, “Because I hired him for something else.”
Olivia’s blood turned cold.
“What?”
Adrian looked toward the camera.
“Security.”
“For whom?”
“For Olivia.”
Nobody spoke.
He continued rapidly.
“After she got pregnant, I received letters.”
Olivia froze.
“What letters?”
“Threats.”
“You never told me.”
“I didn’t want to scare you.”
“What threats?”
Adrian rubbed both hands over his face.
“Someone claimed your grandfather had stolen property from their family. They said the Bennett heir would repay the debt.”
Jonathan frowned.
“Why did you hire Voss instead of contacting police?”
“Because Voss said the threats were probably extortion.”
Olivia felt fury rise.
“You gave him access to my medical records?”
“He said he needed to assess risk.”
“By stealing them?”
“I didn’t know he was stealing anything!”
Jonathan’s voice sharpened.
“Where are these threat letters?”
Adrian looked down.
“Gone.”
“Why?”
“I destroyed them.”
Jonathan laughed once in disbelief.
“Of course you did.”
Adrian slammed his fist on the table.
“I was trying to protect my wife!”
Olivia stared at him.
“You were cheating on me while secretly hiring a disgraced doctor to follow me.”
Adrian looked broken.
“I know how it sounds.”
“No. I don’t think you do.”
Before the meeting could continue, Jonathan received a message from his investigator.
He read it twice.
Then turned toward Olivia.
“What?”
“The black sedan that followed Camille has been identified.”
“Who owns it?”
Jonathan’s expression darkened.
“Not Voss.”
“Then who?”
He rotated his phone.
The registered owner was a property-management company.
Olivia recognized the company immediately.
Her grandfather had done business with it twenty years earlier.
The current president was Richard Bennett.
Her uncle.
Her mother’s younger brother.
The man who had spent Olivia’s entire childhood insisting the Bennett fortune should have belonged to him.
And fifteen minutes later, Richard called Olivia himself.
She answered.
His first words were not a greeting.
“Your grandfather should have left that house to me.”
Olivia went completely still.

Then Richard added:
“And if you want your baby to grow up with a mother, you’ll stop asking questions.”
