Chapter 8 - The Empire Begins to FallThree weeks after Pier Seventeen, Dante Valenti appeared on the front page of every major newspaper in America.

Elena stood beside Dante inside an abandoned shipping office overlooking Pier Seventeen.

Below, Nathan's men moved between cargo containers.

Federal tactical teams waited three blocks away.

Agent Shaw wanted surveillance.

Dante wanted war.

Elena wanted both men to stop talking like the decision belonged exclusively to them.

“We follow the plan,” she said.

Dante looked at her.

“I didn't say anything.”

“You were thinking loudly.”

Marco checked his weapon.

“She does that.”

Dante ignored him.

“Elena, once we enter—”

“I stay behind you.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“Then why did I bother asking?”

“You didn't ask.”

She adjusted the tiny microphone beneath her collar.

“You announced.”

Dante stepped closer.

“If shooting starts—”

“I take cover.”

“Immediately.”

“Yes.”

“And if I tell you to run—”

“I assess whether you're being reasonable.”

His eyes narrowed.

“That isn't how running works.”

“It is tonight.”

Marco cleared his throat.

“We should go before this turns into couples therapy.”

Elena and Dante spoke simultaneously.

“We're not a couple.”

Marco nodded.

“Of course.”

They descended.

Nathan waited inside Warehouse Four.

Julian sat bound to a chair.

Alessandro sat opposite him.

When Elena entered, Julian's eyes widened.

“I told you not to come.”

Nathan slapped tape over his mouth.

“Romantic.”

Dante's gaze went to his uncle.

Alessandro looked terrible but conscious.

“You took your time,” he said.

Dante almost smiled.

Nathan stood behind them.

“Phones. Weapons.”

Dante placed his gun down.

Elena surrendered her phone.

Nathan searched them.

His hands paused at Elena's microphone.

She froze.

Nathan smiled.

Then ripped it away.

“Federal agents?”

Elena said nothing.

Nathan crushed the device beneath his shoe.

“Predictable.”

He looked at Dante.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

Nathan smiled.

“They won't enter.”

“Why?”

“Because I told them I wired the warehouse.”

Dante glanced upward.

Nathan raised a small trigger.

“Dead-man switch.”

Elena's heart slammed.

“If my thumb leaves this button…”

Nathan smiled.

“…we all become a news story.”

Dante looked around.

“You won't detonate.”

“Why?”

“You want the money.”

“Correct.”

Nathan led them toward a laptop.

“Biometrics.”

The screen requested fingerprints.

Elena placed her thumb.

Dante followed.

A second prompt appeared.

Retinal scan.

Nathan held the device.

After both scans, the trust unlocked.

Balance:

$42,846,119.08

Nathan stared like a starving man seeing food.

“Transfer authorization.”

Elena read the screen.

Two passwords required.

One for each beneficiary.

Dante looked at her.

They didn't know them.

Nathan noticed.

“Don't test me.”

“We don't have passwords.”

“Your fathers left them.”

Elena thought.

Birthdays had opened the files.

But final transfer passwords would be different.

Her father's letter.

Give our children something we never had.

A clean future.

She looked at Dante.

He understood at the same moment.

“Future,” he said.

Nathan frowned.

Elena typed:

FUTURE

Denied.

Nathan lifted the trigger slightly.

“Again.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her father used to say one phrase constantly.

Whenever she was afraid.

Whenever she failed.

Whenever something seemed impossible.

Choose what comes next.

She typed:

WHATCOMESNEXT

Accepted.

Dante's password remained.

He stared at the screen.

Nathan grew impatient.

“Dante.”

“My father said something.”

“Remember faster.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Sofia's stories.

Vittorio's letter.

Build something worth leaving behind.

Dante typed:

WORTHLEAVING

Accepted.

Nathan smiled.

“Transfer everything.”

“No.”

The smile vanished.

Nathan pointed the gun toward Julian.

“Elena.”

Julian shook his head violently.

Elena looked at him.

Fourteen months.

Sunday mornings.

Dinners.

Plans.

A wedding that had never been real.

And yet some of it had.

That was what made betrayal cruel.

Truth rarely erased every good memory.

Nathan cocked the gun.

“Transfer.”

Elena clicked.

A confirmation appeared.

Destination account required.

Nathan entered offshore details.

Dante watched.

“Cayman account?”

“Old habits.”

Nathan confirmed.

The screen loaded.

Then displayed:

TRANSFER FLAGGED — FEDERAL HOLD ACTIVE

Nathan stared.

“What?”

Elena smiled.

“You really thought Agent Shaw gave us access to forty-two million dollars without monitoring it?”

Nathan's face twisted.

“You—”

The warehouse lights went out.

Marco.

Dante moved.

Elena dropped.

Gunfire exploded.

Nathan shouted.

Julian's chair crashed sideways.

Alessandro rolled behind a crate.

Elena crawled toward him.

“Can you move?”

“At my age? Barely on good days.”

She cut his restraints using a piece of broken metal.

Dante fought Nathan in the darkness.

The dead-man trigger skidded across the floor.

Elena saw it.

So did Julian.

He threw himself from the chair.

Caught it with his bound hands.

“Got it!”

A gunman raised his weapon toward him.

Elena screamed.

Dante fired.

The gunman fell.

Federal agents stormed the exits.

“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!”

Nathan ran.

Dante followed.

“Elena, stay!”

She ignored him.

Of course.

Nathan reached the pier.

Dante tackled him.

The two crashed against a railing.

Nathan swung a knife.

Dante caught his wrist.

Elena stopped twenty feet away.

Nathan looked at her.

Then smiled.

He let the knife fall.

And pulled another trigger from his coat.

Dante froze.

Nathan laughed.

“You thought there was only one?”

He pressed it.

Nothing.

Again.

Nothing.

From behind them, Alessandro raised a severed wire.

“Looking for this?”

Nathan's face collapsed.

Alessandro smiled.

“I was dismantling bombs before you were stealing lunch money.”

Nathan lunged at Dante.

Dante hit him once.

Hard.

Nathan collapsed.

Dante stood over him.

For one terrifying second, Elena saw what he wanted to do.

Kill him.

End it.

Nathan laughed through blood.

“Go ahead.”

Dante's fists tightened.

Nathan whispered:

“Be your father.”

Dante's face changed.

He looked toward Elena.

Then toward Alessandro.

Then down at Nathan.

“No.”

He stepped backward.

“My father wanted out.”

Federal agents surrounded Nathan.

Dante continued.

“So do I.”

Nathan was handcuffed.

Taken away alive.

Elena exhaled.

Behind them, Julian was being freed.

She walked toward him.

He looked exhausted.

“Ellie.”

“Are you okay?”

“Probably not.”

“Fair.”

He looked at Dante.

Then back at her.

“I never meant for this.”

“I know.”

“I did use you.”

“Yes.”

“But I loved you.”

Elena's throat tightened.

“I know that too.”

Julian looked at the ring she was no longer wearing.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He smiled sadly.

“Probably too late.”

“Yes.”

“I hope one day you forgive me.”

Elena considered it.

“I might.”

His eyes lifted.

“But I'm not marrying you.”

He laughed softly.

“I figured.”

Paramedics led him away.

Elena watched.

Dante approached quietly.

“Are you all right?”

“No.”

“Reasonable.”

She looked toward Nathan being placed inside a federal vehicle.

“Is it over?”

“The shooting?”

“Yes.”

“The rest?”

“No.”

Dante looked toward Manhattan.

“There will be trials. Investigations. People inside my organization who won't accept change.”

Elena nodded.

“And Valenti Holdings?”

“May collapse.”

She looked at him.

“You okay with that?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

He smiled.

Elena moved closer.

“Dante?”

“Yes.”

“Are you still in love with me?”

His smile disappeared.

“Yes.”

“Even after I ignored every instruction you gave me tonight?”

“Unfortunately, that seems to be part of the problem.”

Elena touched his lapel.

“And you're still not going to ask for anything?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you're still healing.”

She nodded.

Then kissed him.

Dante froze.

Completely.

Elena pulled back.

For once the most dangerous man in New York had absolutely nothing to say.

She smiled.

“That wasn't a proposal.”

“I know.”

“It wasn't even a promise.”

“I know.”

“It was just something I wanted.”

Dante's voice was rough.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“Can you want it again?”

She kissed him again.

Behind them, Alessandro groaned.

“For God's sake. I was kidnapped for this?”

Elena laughed against Dante's mouth.

Dante didn't.

He simply wrapped his arms around her.

Carefully.

May you like

As if she were something he had wanted for so long he was afraid reality might break her.

And for the first time, Elena understood the difference between being possessed and being held.
