Chapter 3 - A Legacy of Integrity

For several seconds, no one in the ballroom moved.

Hundreds of candles flickered beneath crystal chandeliers. White roses climbed from gold vases. Onstage, a podium waited beneath Dominic’s enormous portrait.

Vivienne could feel the guests trying to understand the procession that had entered the room.

A woman in green holding a little girl’s hand.

A blond woman in red holding a boy’s hand.

Dominic walking behind them with fury concealed beneath a practiced smile.

Julian Hart beside a lawyer carrying a briefcase.

Chloe Mercer following at a distance, as pale as the tablecloths.

The master of ceremonies, television journalist Nathan Cole, recovered first.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it appears our guest of honor has arrived with—”

“His family,” Vivienne said.

Her voice carried farther than she expected.

Celeste stopped beside her.

“Both of them,” she added.

A wave of murmurs swept across the room.

Dominic moved quickly.

He climbed the stage and took the microphone.

“My apologies, everyone. There has been an unfortunate personal misunderstanding.”

Vivienne almost admired the ease with which he lied.

His life was collapsing in front of six hundred people, yet his voice remained controlled.

“A misunderstanding?” Celeste called.

Noah gripped her hand.

Several guests raised their phones.

Dominic continued.

“I would ask everyone to respect the privacy of the children involved. Tonight’s event supports the Meridian Children’s Hospital Initiative, and I will not allow a private family dispute to overshadow—”

“You used the children’s charity account to hide corporate transfers,” Julian said.

The room went completely silent.

Dominic stared at him.

Gordon Pike pushed away from his table.

“What transfers?”

“Julian is making reckless allegations based on incomplete information,” Dominic said.

Miriam Kessler approached the stage.

“I have the transaction records.”

Dominic’s smile vanished.

“How did you obtain them?”

“Through a lawful audit authorized by the controlling trust.”

Dominic looked at Vivienne.

She saw fear now.

Not regret.

Not shame.

Fear.

He had known the marriages might be exposed someday. He had prepared excuses, manipulated records, and trained Chloe to control his calendar.

But he had not expected Vivienne to discover the money at the same time.

“What did he do?” Celeste asked.

Julian turned toward her.

“Over the last eighteen months, approximately twelve million dollars moved from Vale Meridian operating accounts into three shell entities.”

The board members began speaking at once.

Dominic raised his voice.

“The funds were transferred as part of the Caldwell acquisition.”

“The Caldwell acquisition has not closed,” Gordon said.

“Preliminary expenses.”

“Twelve million dollars?”

“You have not reviewed the full structure.”

“Then show us.”

Dominic looked toward the technical booth.

“End the presentation.”

No one responded.

Malcolm Pierce had entered the ballroom and stood beside the hotel’s audiovisual director.

“The system is under the control of hotel management,” Malcolm said.

Dominic stepped away from the microphone.

“You are all making a catastrophic mistake.”

Vivienne walked toward the stage.

Sophie’s hand remained in hers.

Every instinct told her to shield her daughter from what came next, yet another instinct told her that taking Sophie away would teach the wrong lesson.

Her daughter had been humiliated publicly.

Dominic had chosen appearances over her tears.

Vivienne would not hide Sophie as though the child were part of the scandal.

She helped her onto the stage.

Then she faced the room.

“My name is Vivienne Hart.”

A few people recognized the surname immediately.

Others looked toward Julian.

“I married Dominic Vale seven years ago. Our daughter, Sophie, is seven years old.”

Sophie stood close enough that her shoulder touched Vivienne’s hip.

“Until twenty minutes ago, I believed we were Dominic’s only family.”

Celeste walked up the stage stairs.

“My name is Celeste Arden Vale. I married Dominic eleven years ago. Our son, Noah, is ten.”

A shocked murmur moved through the tables.

Dominic reached for the microphone.

Vivienne pulled it away.

“You have spoken enough.”

“You do not control this event.”

“I control the building.”

A few nervous laughs rippled across the ballroom.

Dominic glared at her.

Celeste took the second microphone from its stand.

“Dominic told me Vivienne was a former employee who had become obsessed with him.”

“He told me Celeste was a charity partner.”

Celeste pointed toward Chloe.

“And apparently, he was sleeping with his secretary.”

Every face turned.

Chloe backed toward the doors.

Dominic stepped in front of Celeste.

“This is slander.”

Chloe stared at him.

“You said you loved me.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

The ballroom erupted.

Vivienne did not feel satisfaction.

She looked at Sophie and Noah.

Both children stood frozen beneath the enormous screen, their father’s portrait towering over them.

A legacy of integrity.

The words suddenly seemed obscene.

“Turn off the screen,” Vivienne said.

Malcolm signaled the technician.

The portrait disappeared.

The screen went black.

Miriam approached the stage and handed Vivienne a folder.

“The board should see this,” she said.

Dominic grabbed for it.

Julian intercepted his wrist.

“Touch my sister again, and this becomes a different kind of meeting.”

Dominic pulled free.

“I never touched her.”

“You controlled her, isolated her, lied to her, and used her inheritance. Don’t pretend violence begins with a fist.”

Vivienne opened the folder.

The first page showed a series of wire transfers approved with Dominic’s digital signature.

The receiving companies were called Northshore Development, Bracken Ridge Consulting, and Aster Holdings.

“Who owns these entities?” Gordon demanded.

Julian answered.

“We traced Northshore to a nominee director in Delaware. Bracken Ridge is registered through an attorney in Nevada. Aster Holdings appears to be controlled by someone using Celeste’s personal information.”

Celeste went still.

“What?”

Dominic looked at her.

“Celeste, there’s an explanation.”

“You created a company in my name?”

“It was part of our estate plan.”

“I have never heard of Aster Holdings.”

“You signed the documents.”

“I signed documents you told me were related to Noah’s school trust.”

Noah looked at his mother.

“Am I losing my school?”

Celeste knelt immediately.

“No, sweetheart.”

“But he took the school money?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Dominic’s irritation flashed.

“Stop frightening him.”

Celeste rose.

“You used my son’s name to hide money, and you’re worried that I’m frightening him?”

Dominic turned toward the board.

“Aster Holdings is a legitimate family entity. Celeste has benefited from it for years.”

“Without knowing it existed?” Gordon asked.

“She delegated financial decisions to me.”

“Because I trusted my husband,” Celeste said.

Vivienne understood the sentence too well.

She looked at Miriam.

“What about my accounts?”

The attorney removed another document.

“We found two refinancing applications secured by East Harbor Trust property.”

Vivienne’s heart stopped.

“I never signed them.”

“The signatures appear to be electronic copies taken from earlier documents.”

“You’re accusing me of forgery,” Dominic said.

Miriam looked at him.

“I’m informing your board that we have referred suspected forgery to outside counsel.”

Dominic’s control finally broke.

He knocked the microphone stand aside.

The metal pole hit the stage with a crash.

Sophie screamed.

Noah stepped backward.

Two security officers moved toward Dominic, but he raised both hands.

“I am not threatening anyone.”

“You frightened your daughter,” Vivienne said.

“I’m trying to protect the company that supports every person in this room.”

“No. You are trying to protect yourself.”

Dominic looked at her with hatred.

“You would have nothing without me.”

The words struck the ballroom harder than his outburst.

Vivienne stared at him.

“What did you say?”

“You spent years hiding behind your family’s money. I built Vale Meridian from nothing.”

“With a loan secured by my inheritance.”

“I repaid it.”

“With money borrowed against property you didn’t own.”

“I created value.”

“You created lies.”

“I gave you a life.”

Sophie began crying again.

Vivienne looked down.

Her daughter’s face was turned away from Dominic.

That was the moment something final happened inside her.

Until then, a small, irrational part of Vivienne had still been searching for the man she married. It had hoped Dominic would drop to his knees, confess everything, and tell his children that none of this was their fault.

Instead, he had chosen to wound her where he believed she was weakest.

Vivienne handed Sophie to Julian.

“Take her to the private lounge.”

“No,” Sophie protested. “I want to stay with you.”

Vivienne kissed her forehead.

“I need to do something that might be scary to watch.”

Sophie looked at her father.

“Is he going to yell again?”

“He won’t be allowed to.”

Julian lifted Sophie into his arms.

Noah hesitated, then turned to Celeste.

“Can I go with her?”

Celeste looked at Vivienne.

“Let him.”

The two children left with Julian and one security officer.

When the doors closed behind them, Vivienne faced Dominic.

“You told me I would have nothing without you.”

“I was angry.”

“No. You were honest.”

“Vivienne—”

“Let us be honest too.”

She opened the third folder.

“Vale Meridian’s original loan was guaranteed by the Hart Family Preservation Trust. When the company defaulted six years ago, the trust purchased its debt through Harbor North Capital.”

Board members began checking their phones.

Gordon stared at Dominic.

“You told us Harbor North was an institutional investor.”

“It is.”

“It belongs to her family?”

Dominic looked trapped.

Vivienne continued.

“Three years ago, Vale Meridian faced another liquidity crisis. Harbor North purchased preferred shares, which were later converted. Additional shares are held through East Harbor Ventures.”

A board member near the front stood.

“How much does the Hart family control?”

“Forty-six percent when the preferred conversion is included,” Miriam said.

Dominic looked sharply at her.

“The conversion was conditional.”

“The condition was triggered when Vale Meridian missed its debt-covenant ratio last quarter.”

“That calculation is disputed.”

“It was certified yesterday.”

Gordon sat down slowly.

“So Vivienne is not merely the largest shareholder.”

Miriam nodded.

“Together with the shares controlled by Julian Hart, the family has a majority.”

The ballroom filled with stunned conversation.

Dominic stared at Vivienne as though seeing a stranger.

“You planned this.”

“I planned to give our daughter cuff links.”

“You brought lawyers.”

“I called them after your secretary introduced me to your other family.”

“You cannot remove me without a board vote.”

Gordon looked toward the other directors.

“We can call one now.”

“This is a charity gala,” Dominic snapped.

“It became an emergency board meeting when we learned that twelve million dollars was missing.”

“No money is missing.”

“Then you won’t object to an independent audit.”

Dominic’s gaze moved around the room.

The directors who once competed for his attention avoided his eyes.

Executives whispered to their spouses.

Donors began leaving their tables.

His kingdom was turning away from him.

Chloe tried to slip through the ballroom doors.

Miriam noticed.

“Ms. Mercer.”

Chloe stopped.

“You may want to remain available.”

“I have done nothing illegal.”

“Then answering questions should be simple.”

Chloe looked at Dominic.

He offered her nothing.

Her lips parted as though she intended to speak.

Before she could, every phone in the ballroom vibrated almost simultaneously.

Vivienne removed hers from her purse.

A breaking-news notification filled the screen.

VALE MERIDIAN EXECUTIVE ACCUSED OF MAINTAINING TWO FAMILIES AT COMPANY GALA

A photograph had already been posted.

It showed Vivienne and Celeste standing on either side of Dominic.

Behind them, the screen displayed his portrait and the words A LEGACY OF INTEGRITY.

Dominic looked at the phones around him.

His face twisted.

“Who leaked this?”

No one answered.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Two police detectives entered with a woman in a navy coat.

Dominic’s anger disappeared.

The woman removed a badge from her pocket.

“Dominic Vale?”

He backed away from the edge of the stage.

“This is a private event.”

“I’m Special Agent Rebecca Sloan with the Financial Crimes Division.”

She climbed the stairs.

“We need to speak with you regarding unauthorized transfers from Vale Meridian and suspected falsification of federally insured lending documents.”

Dominic looked at Vivienne.

“You called federal agents?”

“I didn’t know enough to call them.”

Julian had returned to the ballroom.

He stood near the doors.

“I did.”

Agent Sloan approached Dominic.

“You are not under arrest at this time. However, you are instructed not to destroy, alter, or remove company records.”

Dominic’s gaze shifted toward Chloe.

It lasted less than a second.

But Vivienne saw it.

So did Chloe.

The secretary stepped away from the doors.

Her face filled with terror.

Agent Sloan followed the direction of Dominic’s glance.

May you like

“Ms. Mercer?”

Chloe ran.
