Chapter 12 - The Wife’s Last Bargain

Reddick and Price kidnapped Vanessa during a transfer to federal court.
The operation was precise.
A false emergency order changed the transport time. Two uniformed officers collected her from the detention center using valid credentials. By the time the real marshals arrived, Vanessa was gone.
A video reached Daniel one hour later.
Vanessa sat inside a moving vehicle, bruised but conscious. Reddick occupied the seat beside her.
“You were always a disappointment,” he told her.
Vanessa looked into the camera.
“Don’t give him anything.”
Reddick struck her.
Daniel’s anger surprised him.
He did not want Vanessa back as his wife. He did not forgive her.
But he did not want her murdered.
Reddick demanded three things: the physical ledger, Robert’s journal, and the hospital-bracelet disk.
The government refused.
Daniel received a separate message from Vanessa through an old email account they had once used for household bills.
It contained only a string of numbers.
Daniel recognized them as dates: their wedding anniversary, Evelyn’s birthday, and the day Caroline disappeared.
Combined, they formed the access code to Vanessa’s private cloud storage.
Inside, Daniel found a recorded confession.
Vanessa had prepared it before surrendering.
She described every act she committed against Evelyn. She named Cassandra and the other women. She explained the forged medical evaluation and admitted she planned to have Evelyn declared incompetent.
Then she disclosed a secret account containing eleven million dollars taken from Reddick’s organizations.
“I told myself I was securing an escape,” she said in the recording. “But part of me wanted the money. I became skilled at explaining greed as fear.”
The confession ended with coordinates.
A quarry outside Gary, Indiana.
Federal agents surrounded it.
They found the vehicle abandoned near an underground service tunnel. Blood marked the rear seat, but no bodies remained.
Daniel noticed the coordinate file had been created months earlier. Vanessa knew Reddick used the quarry as a route to a hidden bunker.
Inside the tunnel, agents found surveillance equipment aimed at a nearby federal records facility.
Reddick and Price planned to enter through an old storm-drain connection.
The evidence vault held thousands of seized documents, including the original ledger and disk.
Security teams locked down the facility.
Reddick anticipated that.
He had placed explosives beneath an adjacent power station, forcing evacuation of the entire district.
During the confusion, he and Price entered wearing emergency-utility uniforms.
Daniel and Ortiz reached the control room as cameras showed the men approaching the vault with Vanessa between them.
“She’s helping them,” an agent said.
Daniel watched Vanessa enter the access code.
The vault opened.
Reddick forced her inside.
Price began filling bags with evidence.
Vanessa looked directly at the camera.
Then she pulled the fire alarm.
Steel shutters dropped over the exits.
Reddick shot her.
Daniel shouted her name though she could not hear him.
Agents flooded the corridor.
Price surrendered immediately.
Reddick held the gun against Vanessa’s neck and demanded an escape vehicle.
Blood soaked the side of her shirt.
Daniel entered the corridor before anyone could stop him.
Reddick smiled.
“The dutiful husband.”
“She needs medical help.”
“She needed moral help years ago.”
“Let her go.”
“Bring the ledger.”
Daniel held up a duplicate bag.
Reddick narrowed his eyes.
“Closer.”
Daniel moved forward.
Vanessa’s gaze met his.
She gave the smallest shake of her head.
Daniel remembered how she used to tap his wrist twice when she wanted him to stop talking during social events.
She tapped Reddick’s arm twice.
A warning.
Then she collapsed deliberately, dragging his gun hand downward.
Daniel threw the evidence bag into Reddick’s face.
Agents fired.
Reddick fell.
For several seconds, the corridor filled with smoke and alarms.
Daniel dropped beside Vanessa.
The bullet had entered below her ribs.
She looked at him with unfocused eyes.
“I opened the vault to lock them inside,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Save your strength.”
“No. I need to say it when it costs me something.”
Paramedics rushed forward.
Vanessa gripped Daniel’s hand.
“I loved you badly.”
He looked at the woman who had shared his home and betrayed his family.
“Yes,” he said. “You did.”
She began to cry.
“Will Evelyn ever forgive me?”
“That belongs to her.”
Vanessa released his hand as the paramedics lifted her.
She survived emergency surgery.
Reddick also survived and was returned to custody under heavy guard. Price began negotiating cooperation within hours.
The physical evidence remained secure.
For the first time, the network’s leaders had no remaining leverage.
Yet Daniel faced another crisis.
Evelyn’s toxicology results showed long-term neurological damage from the drugs Vanessa administered.
Doctors could not promise full recovery.
Her confusion might continue.
Her memory might fade.
The woman who had fought so hard to prove she was not losing her mind could now lose parts of it because of what had been done to her.
Daniel sat beside her bed.
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“You look like your father when you’re worried.”
“Which father?”
May you like
She touched his cheek.
“The one who stayed.”
