Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT EVELYN WAS BORNEmergency lights flickered red along the corridor.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then hospital staff shifted into crisis mode.

Nurses pushed Claire’s bed manually toward the operating suite.

Dr. Ford shouted instructions.

I heard security alarms downstairs.

The generator failure was not an accident.

Someone had entered the hospital’s utility system.

Reynolds grabbed my arm.

“Stay with your wife.”

“I can help.”

“You help by keeping Claire alive.”

Another sound echoed through the darkness.

Gunfire.

One shot.

Far away.

Then two more.

Patients began shouting.

A nurse screamed.

I ran alongside Claire’s bed until we reached the restricted surgical wing.

“Mr. Mercer, you can’t come farther.”

“I’m her medical proxy.”

“And we are performing an emergency C-section.”

Dr. Ford looked at me.

“I will take care of both of them.”

The doors closed.

I stood there useless.

That was the hardest battlefield I had ever faced.

Because there was nothing to shoot.

Nothing to carry.

Nothing to fix.

Only waiting.

Reynolds’s voice came through the hallway.

“They found the sabotage point.”

“Who?”

“Two contractors using stolen hospital credentials.”

“Pike?”

“One may be.”

Then an alarm sounded inside surgery.

My body moved before my mind did.

A nurse stopped me.

“They’re working.”

I pressed both hands against the wall.

Minutes stretched.

Five.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Then a sound came through the doors.

Small.

Thin.

Furious.

A baby crying.

My daughter.

I covered my face.

For the first time since returning home, I cried.

Not quietly.

Not carefully.

Everything I had held since seeing Claire broke loose.

A nurse came out smiling through exhaustion.

“Your daughter is here.”

“Claire?”

“She’s stable.”

“Baby?”

“Three pounds, fourteen ounces. Breathing with assistance. NICU team has her.”

“What’s her name?”

I remembered the ultrasound.

“Evelyn.”

The nurse smiled.

“Evelyn Mercer.”

At that exact moment, my phone began vibrating.

Then Reynolds’s.

Then Ortiz’s.

Then every phone in the hallway.

Claire’s dead-man trigger had activated.

Emails.

Files.

Video archives.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Evidence copied simultaneously to federal prosecutors, investigative journalists, and Claire’s attorney.

Victor had lost control.

Ortiz opened one file.

Her face changed.

“Ethan.”

“What?”

“Claire recorded the attack.”

My stomach turned.

A nursery camera.

The same system we installed to monitor the baby after birth had been running early.

Claire had hidden the cloud backup inside the encrypted archive.

I did not want to watch.

But I needed to know.

The video began at 8:14 p.m.

Claire stood in the nursery folding tiny clothes.

Then Graham Pike entered.

No forced door.

Claire let him in.

Because he claimed Samuel had been injured.

Four more men followed.

Claire immediately understood.

She backed toward the crib.

Pike demanded passwords.

She refused.

He threatened me.

She still refused.

Then the violence started.

The footage did not show every injury clearly, and I was grateful for that.

But it showed enough.

Most importantly, it captured voices.

Pike called someone.

“Mr. Blackwood, she still won’t give it up.”

Victor’s voice came through speakerphone.

“Then remind her what happens to soldiers who come home early.”

My hands curled into fists.

Claire shouted, “If you touch Ethan, everything releases.”

Pike asked what she had done.

Claire smiled through blood.

“Something none of you can stop.”

Then another figure entered the nursery.

Not one of the attackers.

Daniel.

He looked horrified.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Pike told him to leave.

Daniel tried to stop them.

Two men restrained him.

That explained why Daniel had claimed he never touched Claire.

He hadn’t.

And he had tried to intervene.

The video ended when one attacker smashed the camera.

But the cloud upload had already saved everything.

Reynolds exhaled.

“This is enough.”

“For Victor?”

“For conspiracy, assault, obstruction, fraud. Combined with the financial records, probably much more.”

“Where is he?”

“We’re searching.”

Then one of her agents approached.

“We found Pike.”

“Alive?”

“Dead.”

The hallway went quiet.

“Where?”

“Hospital electrical room.”

“What happened?”

“Single gunshot. Looks like someone silenced him.”

Victor was cleaning up loose ends.

Reynolds looked at me.

“He’s not running.”

“What?”

“He’s eliminating witnesses.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Victor.

“Congratulations,” he said.

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“Where are you?”

“Your daughter is beautiful.”

I stopped breathing.

“How do you know?”

He chuckled softly.

“Turn around.”

Through the glass wall at the end of the corridor, I could see the NICU entrance.

A nurse was shouting.

Security guards were running.

Then I saw a man in blue medical scrubs pushing an incubator into a service elevator.

My daughter’s incubator.

Victor whispered into the phone.

“You took my family away from me, Ethan.”

May you like

The elevator doors began closing.

“So I’m taking yours.”
