Chapter 9 - Pier NineteenPier Nineteen looked abandoned from the road.

Then she remembered Room 814.

Mara had been pale.

Sick.

Nora had found her collapsed in the service corridor.

She had cut her hand on broken glass.

Nora, trained in basic first aid by the hotel, had helped clean the wound.

Mara had asked an odd question.

“What blood type are you?”

Nora had laughed.

“O negative. Why?”

“Lucky.”

At the time, Nora had assumed Mara meant universal donor.

Now the memory felt different.

Michael was taken to the hospital under police guard.

Nora sat inside Matteo's SUV while Detective Hale examined copies of Sofia's recording.

“What does ‘blood’ mean?” Nora asked.

Matteo didn't answer.

Dominic did.

“Biometric storage.”

Nora stared.

“What?”

“Some encrypted devices can use biological keys.”

“You mean fingerprints?”

“More sophisticated than that.”

Matteo finally spoke.

“There are systems that can encode access around genetic markers.”

Nora laughed nervously.

“You're telling me Mara turned my blood into a password?”

“Maybe.”

“Without telling me?”

“Maybe she thought ignorance kept you alive.”

“It nearly got me killed.”

Matteo looked at her.

“That part is over.”

“You keep saying things like that as if bullets respect your confidence.”

His mouth almost curved.

Then Hale received a call.

“We found the clinic where Mara was treated the week before her death.”

They drove there.

The clinic had closed, but archived laboratory records remained.

Mara had ordered one test shortly before dying.

A blood compatibility panel.

The donor listed was Nora Bennett.

Nora stared at the page.

“How did she get my blood?”

Hale pointed to an entry.

“Hotel medical response. When you helped her after the accident, you cut your thumb.”

Nora remembered.

Barely.

“A nurse treated both of us.”

“Mara bribed the nurse to preserve your sample.”

Nora felt violated.

Then she noticed another document.

“What's this?”

A patent record.

Biometric encryption company.

Founder: Lucas DeLuca.

Matteo stared.

“My brother.”

Luca had developed cybersecurity systems before entering the family business.

Mara had trusted him.

He had built an encrypted archive that required two biological keys.

One from a DeLuca.

One from someone unrelated to the family.

Nora.

“That's why Victor needs me alive,” she said.

“For now,” Matteo replied.

The archive itself was hidden on a physical drive.

According to Michael's records, Luca had moved it repeatedly.

Its final location was unknown.

Then Nora remembered the photograph in the dumpster.

“The picture.”

Matteo looked at her.

“What about it?”

“The photograph that exposed Luca.”

She stood.

“Why leave a physical photograph when Victor could send it digitally?”

Hale understood first.

“Because it contained something.”

They retrieved the evidence bag from police storage.

Under magnification, technicians found a microscopic memory strip embedded inside the photograph's laminate.

Luca had planted it.

Not Victor.

The photograph was never meant to accuse Luca.

It was meant to reach Matteo.

The reflection had been deliberate.

A signal.

The memory strip contained coordinates.

Pier Nineteen.

And a message recorded by Luca.

“If you're seeing this, Victor got closer than I expected.”

Luca looked exhausted.

“Matteo, listen before you get angry.”

Nora glanced at Matteo.

Even recorded Luca knew his brother.

“The night Isabella was taken, Celeste and I planned to move her. We discovered Victor had placed someone inside the house. We thought the safest option was to make Isabella disappear for several hours while we identified the traitor.”

Matteo stood.

“You kidnapped my daughter?”

Luca continued as though anticipating him.

“Yes. You can hit me later.”

Nora almost laughed.

“We had a safe house ready. But someone attacked Celeste before we could leave. I arrived too late. I found Isabella gone.”

His voice broke.

“I followed Victor's men. I managed to recover her in the alley, but they caught me.”

Nora stared at the screen.

“Then who put Isabella in the dumpster?”

The video answered.

“I did.”

Matteo's face became murderous.

“I had no choice. They were thirty seconds behind me. I wrapped her in thermal lining and placed the photo beneath her. I knew the dumpster had been emptied. I knew someone would pass.”

Nora whispered, “Me.”

Luca continued.

“I chose the alley because Nora Bennett walked there whenever Franklin Station flooded.”

Matteo looked at Nora.

She had been chosen.

“I knew from Mara's records that Nora was the second key. I needed Victor to believe she was random.”

The video glitched.

“If Nora finds Isabella, protect her.”

Nora swallowed.

“If you're watching this, Victor probably already knows.”

The screen went black.

Then one final line appeared.

THE ARCHIVE IS UNDER PIER 19.

Hale immediately mobilized officers.

Matteo stood.

“I'm going.”

“So am I,” Nora said.

“No.”

“Don't start.”

“Victor knows you're the key.”

“Which means he won't kill me before I open the archive.”

“That is not reassurance.”

“It gives us leverage.”

Matteo stepped close.

“You are not bait.”

Nora stared at him.

“Neither is your brother.”

Silence.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Matteo, you've spent your whole life solving fear with power. It's not working.”

He flinched.

“Let me help.”

“Why?”

The question seemed to surprise even him.

“After everything I've done, why are you still here?”

Nora thought of Isabella's tiny fingers around his shirt.

Of the broken man standing in the church.

Of the apology in the holding cell.

“Because Isabella deserves her father back.”

His eyes changed.

“And because,” Nora added, “I don't think you're as far gone as you want everyone to believe.”

Matteo lifted one hand.

Slowly.

He touched the bruise he had left on her cheek.

His voice became rough.

“I will regret that for the rest of my life.”

“Good.”

A faint smile touched her mouth.

“Regret can be useful.”

For one dangerous second, neither moved.

Then Dominic entered.

“We found Luca's tracker.”

“Where?”

“Pier Nineteen.”

Matteo's expression hardened.

“Alive?”

Dominic nodded.

“For now.”

Then he displayed a second signal.

A smaller one.

Nora recognized the device ID.

It belonged to Isabella's baby monitor.

Matteo went completely still.

“No.”

Dominic's face had turned pale.

Someone had taken Isabella from the mansion.

And they were bringing her to the pier.
