Chapter 9 - The Sterling BloodlineWilliam read the letter three times.

Not Hale.

Not Miller.

Mercer.

She had been arrested at eighteen after confessing to killing Richard Sterling's personal physician, Dr. Elias Warren.

Except Detective Kane suspected the confession had been coerced.

The deeper she looked, the worse it became.

No fingerprints.

No murder weapon.

No eyewitness.

Just a signed confession from a terrified teenager who had spent her entire childhood moving through foster homes.

Claire had been released six months earlier after new evidence overturned the conviction.

Nobody knew where she went.

Until I opened the prison visitor records.

One person had visited her every month for eleven years.

Melanie Bell.

Anna's sister.

The missing catering supervisor.

Melanie hadn't only been helping Anna.

She had been protecting my sister.

We found Claire in a small town near the Pennsylvania border.

She worked at a veterinary clinic under a different last name.

When she opened her apartment door, she looked at me and Matthew.

Then she closed it again.

Matthew knocked.

“Claire?”

“Go away.”

“We're your brother and sister.”

Silence.

I exchanged a look with Matthew.

Then the door reopened.

Claire's eyes were red.

“You weren't supposed to find me.”

“Apparently nobody is supposed to find anyone in this family,” I said.

That almost made her smile.

Inside, she told us everything.

She remembered Dr. Warren.

He had been part of Richard's network.

When Claire was seventeen, Melanie found her.

Melanie explained that Claire had siblings and helped her secretly collect evidence.

Dr. Warren discovered what they were doing.

The night he died, Claire went to his office to steal records.

Someone else arrived.

Andrew Hale.

Claire hid.

She heard them arguing.

Dr. Warren wanted out.

Andrew refused.

Then came a gunshot.

Andrew killed him.

Claire ran.

Police arrested her two blocks away.

Richard arranged the confession.

“He told me if I fought the charge, he'd kill you.”

She looked at Matthew and me.

“I had just learned you existed.”

My throat closed.

“You went to prison for us?”

“I was eighteen and stupid.”

“No,” Matthew said quietly. “You were eighteen and alone.”

Claire looked away.

“Melanie spent eleven years trying to clear my name.”

“And now Andrew has her,” I said.

Claire stood.

“Then we're getting her back.”

She had something Andrew wanted more than the ledger.

Dr. Warren's original notebook.

She'd hidden it before her arrest.

It contained patient names, DNA records, and the biological identities of hundreds of children.

It could destroy every person connected to Richard's network.

Claire retrieved it from a storage locker.

William stared at the notebook.

“This ends them.”

“Only if Melanie survives,” Claire said.

Andrew finally called.

This time he asked for Matthew.

His brother.

“Come alone,” Andrew said.

Matthew gripped the phone.

“You kidnapped a woman.”

“She created this mess.”

“No. Richard did.”

“You don't understand Richard.”

“I understand enough.”

Andrew's voice softened.

“I raised you after Mom died.”

“You were my brother.”

“I am your brother.”

“No.”

Matthew swallowed.

“You helped steal me.”

Silence.

Then Andrew said, “I saved you.”

“You don't get to call it saving when nobody asked you.”

Andrew disconnected.

But the call lasted long enough to trace.

He was back in New York.

At Sterling Children's Hospital.

The cruelest location imaginable.

A building funded by the same foundation Richard used to hide his trafficking network.

Police surrounded it discreetly.

Andrew was on the unfinished eighteenth floor.

Melanie sat tied to a chair near the windows.

William, Matthew, Claire, Kane, and I entered through the construction elevator.

Andrew stood beside Melanie.

Gun in hand.

He looked exhausted.

Not monstrous.

That somehow made it worse.

“Matthew.”

“Let her go.”

“You brought everyone.”

“Of course I did.”

Andrew laughed.

“You were always terrible at following instructions.”

Matthew stepped forward.

“Why?”

Andrew looked at him.

“Because Father told me what happened after I turned sixteen.”

Andrew had been born naturally to the Hales.

His mother later suffered multiple miscarriages.

Then Richard offered them a baby.

Matthew.

“At first I believed it was legitimate,” Andrew said. “Then I learned the truth.”

“And you did nothing.”

“I was sixteen.”

“What about when you were twenty?”

Andrew looked away.

“Twenty-five?”

Silence.

“Thirty?”

Andrew shouted, “I was protecting the family!”

Matthew's voice stayed calm.

“No. You were protecting yourself.”

Andrew's gun trembled.

“You think truth fixes everything? Thousands of people will lose families.”

“Families built on kidnapping.”

“Some of those parents didn't know!”

“Then they deserve the truth too.”

Melanie lifted her head.

“Andrew.”

He looked at her.

“You were always weak.”

She smiled through a split lip.

“No. I was scared.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Scared people can still choose better.”

Andrew's eyes filled with tears.

For one second, I thought he might surrender.

Then another voice came from behind us.

“Don't listen to her.”

Richard Sterling stepped from the stairwell.

Impossible.

He was supposed to be in federal custody.

Detective Kane raised her weapon.

“Hands!”

Richard smiled.

“Detective, two of your officers work for me.”

Kane's radio went dead.

Richard aimed his gun at Matthew.

Andrew turned.

“You said you wouldn't hurt him.”

Richard laughed.

“You've always been sentimental about your little brother.”

Matthew stared at Andrew.

There it was.

The truth.

Andrew might have committed terrible things.

But he loved Matthew.

Richard knew it.

And used it.

“Give me the notebook,” Richard said.

Claire held it against her chest.

“No.”

Richard aimed at her.

“Then you die first.”

Andrew moved between them.

Richard frowned.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Andrew.”

“No more.”

Richard fired.

Andrew fell.

Matthew screamed.

Kane shot Richard in the shoulder.

Chaos exploded.

Police stormed the floor.

Richard dropped his weapon.

Claire ran toward Melanie.

I dropped beside Andrew with Matthew.

Blood spread beneath him.

Andrew looked at his brother.

“I’m sorry.”

Matthew held his hand.

“Stay awake.”

“I should've told you.”

“Yes.”

“I should've stopped him.”

“Yes.”

Andrew coughed.

“Did I ever tell you… you were the annoying one?”

Matthew laughed through tears.

“Every day.”

Paramedics arrived.

Andrew survived.

Richard survived too.

This time he was transported under federal guard.

No paid detective.

No corrupted officer.

No secret escape.

By sunrise, Project Mercy was national news.

Hundreds of investigations opened.

Families demanded DNA testing.

Judges issued warrants.

Richard Sterling's hidden empire began collapsing.

And William finally brought Ethan home.

But peace lasted exactly two days.

Because when William opened his father's old safe, he found one final letter.

Addressed to him.

Written thirty-two years earlier.

And the first sentence read:

Richard isn't your uncle.
