Chapter 10 - THE CHAMBER OF NAMESThe tunnel beneath the old warehouse was the deepest yet.

He was placed under federal guard.
Eli refused to release my hand for the next twelve hours.
I didn’t blame him.
Neither of us wanted to sleep.
The black drive Samuel carried was encrypted.
Federal technicians estimated days to break it.
Samuel offered the password.
For one condition.
Protection for Caleb.
Not himself.
His son.
Caleb refused.
“I don’t want anything from him.”
Samuel watched him through the hospital glass.
“You’re alive because of me.”
Caleb stepped closer.
“No. I’m alive despite you.”
Samuel looked almost proud.
Then he gave the password.
PHOENIX1987.
The drive opened.
Inside were financial records showing Desert Line’s modern operations.
And one folder labeled BISHOP.
No name.
Just communications.
Orders.
Payments.
Surveillance instructions.
One message instructed operatives to sabotage Rachel’s vehicle.
The sender used Bishop’s code.
Samuel’s claim was true.
He hadn’t ordered Rachel’s murder.
Bishop had.
The question became obvious.
Who was Bishop?
Then we found a message from six months earlier.
CONTINUE OBSERVATION OF DANIEL/ELEMENT E.
Element E.
Eli.
Another read:
SUBJECT SHOWS SIGNS OF HEARING TUNNEL MOVEMENT. IF DISCOVERY OCCURS, USE ANIMAL INCIDENT AS COVER.
The rattlesnake hadn’t been planted.
But someone had planned to use the snakes as an explanation if Eli discovered activity.
The most disturbing message came later.
KEEP MARA CLOSE. SHE TRUSTS FAMILY.
Mara read it twice.
Her face changed.
“Family.”
Everyone thought Thomas.
But I remembered something.
Mara wasn’t Thomas Keene’s biological daughter.
Her mother died when she was five.
Thomas raised her.
Who else counted as family?
Captain Evelyn Ross asked federal analysts to trace old personal associations.
Within hours, they found a connection.
Mara’s mother had a brother.
Dean Vance.
Son of former Sheriff Harold Vance.
Mara’s uncle.
Dean had worked as a county building inspector for thirty years.
He had inspected the farmhouse after Walter died.
He knew tunnels.
He knew electrical systems.
He knew local law-enforcement procedures.
And he had access to evidence-storage layouts.
Most importantly, Dean Vance had a scar beneath his left ear.
He smoked cedar pipe tobacco.
And collected vintage motorcycles.
Sophie had mistaken Samuel for Bishop because the two men intentionally dressed similarly during prisoner transfers.
A method of confusing witnesses.
Dean Vance was the current Bishop.
Mara called his phone.
Disconnected.
Agents went to his home.
Empty.
Garage empty.
Safe empty.
He had fled.
Then the hospital fire alarm activated.
Samuel’s security camera went black.
Mara sprinted toward his room.
Dean was already there.
Disguised as a maintenance worker.
He shot one guard.
Grabbed Samuel.
And disappeared into a service elevator.
The building locked down.
We searched every floor.
Nothing.
Then Caleb found me.
“Where’s Eli?”
“With an agent.”
“What agent?”
I turned.
The chair beside me was empty.
Again.
My blood turned to ice.
A maintenance cart sat abandoned near the stairwell.
Inside was Eli’s stuffed fox.
Dean hadn’t come for Samuel alone.
He had come for the only person who could force all of us to cooperate.
My son.
A hospital security camera showed Dean entering an ambulance bay with Samuel in a wheelchair and Eli walking beside him.
Three minutes later, an ambulance left.
Its GPS tracker had been disabled.
But Samuel dropped something in the bay.
A torn piece of paper.
Three words written in blood.
WHERE FIRE STARTED.
Caleb understood first.
“The quarry.”
“No,” I said.
Rachel’s words returned.
Grandpa put something important where fire couldn’t touch it.
Fire.
The fireplace.
But Samuel wrote where fire started.
Walter’s archive mentioned the first Desert Line operation began in 1989 after a warehouse fire.
The warehouse still existed.
At the edge of Cedar Ridge.
Abandoned.
Agents raced there.
Inside, we found the ambulance.
Empty.
And beneath it, another tunnel.
Dean had brought Eli to the birthplace of Desert Line.

For one final purpose.
To destroy every witness underground.
