Chapter 11 - HE CAME FOR THE PASSWORDFederal agents separated us immediately.

I was taken to the bedroom.
Liam went to the kitchen.
Our mother remained in the living room.
Sarah Bell was escorted outside.
Agent Cole reviewed the house cameras.
The photograph had been captured through a tiny device hidden inside a smoke detector.
It transmitted automatically.
No one inside the house had necessarily taken it.
That should have relieved us.
It did not.
Someone had installed the device before we arrived.
Only government personnel and the property-management contractor knew the safe-house address in advance.
Daniel’s reach extended into federal protection.
We were moved again.
This time, no house.
No clinic.
No location connected to an outside contractor.
Agent Cole placed us inside an unused wing of a federal training facility.
Concrete walls.
Controlled access.
Armed guards at every entrance.
Liam called it a bunker.
I called it proof that Daniel was winning.
Every move reduced my life.
Every precaution built a smaller cage.
Ethan had once controlled me through locks.
Now fear controlled me through security.
I told Agent Cole I wanted to cooperate with the trap.
“No,” Liam said.
“We need Daniel to believe he can get the authorization.”
“No.”
“He will keep coming.”
“Then let law enforcement find him.”
“They haven’t.”
“They will.”
“When? After another nurse is threatened? After Brooke is killed? After Mom disappears?”
Miriam flinched.
Liam lowered his voice.
“You are not bait.”
“I am already the target.”
“That doesn’t mean we hand you to him.”
Agent Cole listened without interrupting.
I faced my brother.
“For six months, I gathered evidence because I thought proof would create safety. It didn’t. Evidence only made dangerous men desperate.”
“So your answer is to walk toward them?”
“My answer is to stop reacting.”
The plan was simple in theory.
A false access session would be scheduled from the original Apex headquarters.
Daniel would receive a message suggesting I had agreed to transfer Northstar funds in exchange for immunity and protection.
The building would be filled with agents.
The authorization terminal would connect only to a mirrored account.
Daniel would have to appear physically or send someone with his security token.
Liam opposed every detail.
Miriam surprised us by supporting me.
“She knows what fear costs,” she said.
“You left because of fear,” Liam replied.
“Yes. And I lost twelve years with my children.”
The words silenced him.
The operation began on a Thursday evening.
Apex headquarters had been closed early due to the investigation.
I entered through the underground garage wearing a dark coat over a protective vest.
The lobby lights remained on.
The company name stretched across the marble wall.
APEX DEVELOPMENT.
Ethan had chosen the word because he liked being associated with the highest point.
I looked at the letters and felt nothing.
Agent Cole led me to the executive conference room.
A biometric scanner and secure terminal had been installed on the table.
Agents occupied offices on three floors.
Liam waited inside a command vehicle across the street.
The false message went out.
CLAIRE PRESENT. AUTHORIZATION WINDOW TWENTY MINUTES.
Daniel responded.
BEGIN SESSION.
The screen activated.
A request appeared for my fingerprint.
I placed my hand on the scanner.
A second request appeared.
VOICE CONFIRMATION.
“I authorize review of Northstar Meridian account controls.”
The mirrored account opened.
Then the building fire alarm began ringing.
Agent Cole touched his earpiece.
“No fire detected. Hold positions.”
Smoke entered through the ventilation system.
Not real smoke.
A chemical fog designed to reduce visibility.
The lights failed.
Emergency power did not activate.
The hospital attack repeated in my mind.
Daniel understood systems.
He attacked infrastructure.
Gunfire sounded in the lobby.
Agents shouted.
Agent Cole pulled me beneath the conference table.
“Stay down.”
A window shattered.
A rope dropped from the roof.
A figure descended outside the glass.
Victor Shaw kicked through the remaining pane.
Cole fired.
Victor rolled behind a cabinet.
Bullets struck the table.
Agent Cole pushed me toward a side door.
“Move!”
We entered Ethan’s private office.
The room smelled of smoke and broken glass.
A hidden panel in the wall stood open.
I had not known it existed.
Victor knew.
He emerged from the passage behind us and struck Cole with the side of his weapon.
Cole fell.
Victor grabbed my injured shoulder.
Pain blinded me.
“Walk.”
He dragged me through the hidden corridor.
The passage led to a private elevator Ethan had installed during renovations.
“Daniel is here?” I asked.
Victor said nothing.
The elevator descended below the garage.
A service tunnel opened into an unfinished subway access corridor beneath the building.
A black vehicle waited.
Victor pushed me into the rear seat.
Daniel Price sat inside.
He looked exactly as he always had.
Plain navy suit.
Thin glasses.
Calm expression.
“You made this unnecessarily difficult, Claire.”
“Rachel probably disagrees.”
“Rachel was never supposed to be harmed.”
“Someone burned down a house around her.”
“Victor can be excessive.”
Victor entered the front seat without reacting.
Daniel placed a tablet across his knees.
“Northstar requires your live biometric confirmation.”
“You already know I won’t give it.”
“You will.”
He turned the tablet toward me.
A live video showed Liam inside the command vehicle.
A man in federal tactical clothing stood behind him.
At first, I assumed it was an agent.
Then the man raised a gun.
“You compromised the operation,” I said.
“I designed the communication software used by half the agencies investigating me.”
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
“Systems are loyal to whoever understands them best.”
“What happens after I authorize the transfer?”
“You and your brother survive.”
“And Ethan?”
“Ethan became inefficient.”
The answer was almost bored.
“You’re going to kill him.”
“I am going to close a liability.”
The vehicle began moving through the tunnel.
I focused on the tablet.
Liam appeared unaware of the gunman behind him.
I needed to warn him without revealing what I was doing.
Daniel opened the Northstar screen.
“Place your thumb here.”
I looked at the amount.
Two hundred forty-three million dollars.
Money stolen through ruined lives.
False projects.
Blackmail.
My father’s death.
My marriage.
“You misunderstood Dad,” I said.
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“Thomas was sentimental.”
“He built a system you never fully understood.”
“I improved his system.”
“No. You corrupted it.”
“Authorize the transfer.”
I placed my thumb on the scanner.
The system requested a voice phrase.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Say it.”
I looked directly at the tablet showing Liam.
Then I spoke the phrase our father taught us during emergencies.
“Liam protects the living.”
Liam’s head lifted.
He heard me through the command channel.
He understood.
He dropped to the floor as the gunman fired.
The video spun wildly.
Daniel grabbed the tablet.
“What did you do?”
The Northstar screen turned red.
BIOMETRIC COERCION DETECTED.
ACCOUNT LOCKED.
AUTHORITIES NOTIFIED.
My father had built a safeguard into the system.
The phrase did not authorize the transfer.
It reported that I was acting under threat.
Daniel’s calm finally disappeared.
Victor looked back.
Sirens echoed inside the tunnel.
Daniel struck me across the face.
“You stupid woman.”
I tasted blood.
Then I smiled.
Ethan had called me that too.
Men like them always mistook refusal for stupidity.
The vehicle accelerated toward the river exit.
Ahead, steel security barriers dropped across the tunnel.
Victor raised his weapon.
Daniel grabbed my throat.
“If I lose Northstar, you lose your brother.”
A gunshot exploded inside the car.
Daniel’s body jerked.
His grip loosened.
May you like
Victor stared at him through the rearview mirror.
Then Victor turned the gun toward me.
