Chapter 7 - The Shot Beneath the Chandelier

The confusion lasted less than two seconds.

It was enough.

Emily threw herself behind the staircase railing as one federal agent lunged toward Judge Avery.

The gun fired.

The chandelier above the foyer shattered.

Crystal rained across the marble.

Nora dropped to the floor.

Garrett lost his grip on Mia, and the little girl ran.

Nora caught her beneath the staircase and covered her body.

More shots erupted.

Then came a command.

“Drop the weapon!”

Avery stood frozen with three red targeting dots trembling across his chest.

His pistol slipped from his hand.

Agents forced him to the floor.

Garrett tried to reach a side corridor, but Elias entered through the front doors with another team.

“You have nowhere left to go,” Elias said.

Beatrice remained seated.

Blood from a small cut on her forehead traveled down one cheek, but her posture stayed rigid.

“You have no idea what you have done,” she told Nora.

Nora held Mia tightly.

“I saved my daughter.”

“You destroyed her inheritance.”

“No. I destroyed your access to it.”

Sloan backed toward the ballroom.

Two agents stopped her.

“I had nothing to do with this,” she said quickly. “Garrett lied to me.”

Nora looked at her.

“You signed medical consent forms for Mia.”

“I thought they were school documents.”

“You told her she was old enough to learn consequences before you hit her.”

Sloan’s face hardened.

“She ruined everything.”

Nora felt Mia flinch.

One of the agents moved Sloan away before Nora could respond.

Garrett was handcuffed near the door.

He looked at Nora with desperate fury.

“This is Elias’s revenge. You know that, don’t you? He manipulated you.”

“You signed away our daughter’s safety.”

“I was trying to save my mother.”

“At the risk of killing Mia.”

“The doctors said the procedure was controlled.”

“Then why did you hide it?”

He had no answer.

Agents searched the townhouse through the night.

They found medical equipment in a locked basement room, including pediatric restraints, blood storage containers, and consent documents bearing Nora’s forged signature.

In Beatrice’s private office, investigators discovered financial ledgers connecting the foundation to eight offshore clinics.

The most damning evidence came from a hidden safe behind Charles Whitcomb’s portrait.

Inside were adoption records, DNA reports, and recordings of confidential meetings.

One recording captured Garrett discussing how to remove Nora from the family.

“She has always been emotionally unstable,” he said.

Sloan’s voice answered.

“People will believe it after the gala.”

Another voice belonged to Beatrice.

“Once the procedure begins, Nora’s objections will become irrelevant.”

Nora listened from a private room while Mia slept against her.

Emily sat across from her.

“You knew about the plan?” Nora asked.

“Parts of it.”

“Did you know Sloan would provoke me?”

“No.”

“But you knew they planned to declare me unstable.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you warn me sooner?”

Emily looked toward the window.

“Because I did not know whether I could trust you.”

“I’m your sister.”

“Blood has never made anyone safe in my life.”

The answer hurt because Nora understood it.

Elias entered.

“The federal team wants statements from both of you.”

“Which federal team?” Emily asked.

“One formed outside Avery’s influence.”

“Can they be trusted?”

“I trust the lead agent.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No,” Elias admitted. “But it is a beginning.”

Nora looked at Mia.

“What happens to Garrett?”

“He will face charges for conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, forged medical consent, and obstruction.”

“And Sloan?”

“Assault on a child, conspiracy, and attempted custodial interference.”

“Beatrice?”

Elias glanced toward the door.

“She has been taken to a hospital under guard.”

Nora felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

“What about the other children?”

“Agents are searching every location connected to Project Aster.”

Emily’s eyes lowered.

“Some facilities will already be empty.”

“Because you warned them?” Nora asked.

“No. Because the Whitcombs always prepared escape routes.”

Nora saw something in Emily’s expression.

“You know where one of those routes leads.”

Emily hesitated.

“Tell us.”

“There is a facility in Vermont. It operates under a private boarding school license.”

“How many children?”

“Possibly twelve.”

“Possibly?”

“I was never allowed inside the residential wing.”

Elias immediately contacted the agents.

Emily grabbed his wrist.

“If they arrive openly, the children will be moved.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

“I go in.”

“No,” Nora said.

Emily turned to her.

“I still have clearance.”

“They know you betrayed them.”

“Not everyone does.”

“You almost died at the clinic.”

“I have lived almost my entire life waiting to die.”

Nora stood.

“That is not courage. That is what they trained you to believe.”

Emily’s eyes flashed.

“You have known me for three hours.”

“And I know they stole your future.”

“They stole more than that.”

“What?”

Emily looked at Mia.

“I had a daughter.”

Nora went still.

“Had?”

“She was born inside the program.”

“Where is she?”

“I do not know.”

“What was her name?”

“Lucy.”

“How old would she be?”

“Five.”

The same age as Mia.

Nora thought of Project Aster’s files, the children classified by maternal lines, the girl named Abigail.

“Do you believe she is in Vermont?”

“I believe that is why Garrett kept the facility hidden from me.”

Nora moved closer.

“Then you will not go alone.”

“You have Mia.”

“And you have Lucy.”

Elias interrupted.

“Neither of you is entering a suspected illegal medical facility without support.”

Emily gave him a bitter smile.

“You sound like a grandfather now.”

“I am trying to become one.”

For the first time, Emily’s expression softened.

By morning, a covert team was assembled.

Nora left Mia in Mrs. Ellis’s care at a protected location. Before leaving, she knelt beside her daughter.

“I have to help another little girl.”

“Is she hurt?”

“I don’t know.”

“Will you come back?”

“Yes.”

Mia studied her carefully.

“Daddy said that too.”

The words cut deeply.

Nora held both of Mia’s hands.

“I will never ask you to trust a promise just because I make it. You can judge me by what I do.”

Mia considered this.

Then she wrapped her arms around Nora.

“Bring the little girl home.”

The Vermont facility stood behind pine trees and a stone wall.

Its sign read ASTER RIDGE ACADEMY.

Children in blue uniforms walked between buildings under supervision.

From a distance, it looked peaceful.

Emily showed her old credentials at the gate.

The guard let them enter.

Nora wore medical scrubs and carried a forged transfer order.

Inside the administration building, framed photographs showed smiling children beside wealthy donors.

One photograph included Sloan.

Another included Garrett.

A third showed Beatrice placing her hand on the shoulder of a little girl with blond hair.

Emily stopped breathing.

“That’s Lucy.”

The photograph was dated four months earlier.

Her daughter was alive.

A bell rang in the corridor.

Children began filing past.

Emily searched every face.

Then a small girl at the end of the line turned.

She had Emily’s gray-green eyes.

“Mommy?” she whispered.

Before Emily could move, an alarm began screaming throughout the building.

Metal shutters dropped over every exit.

A voice came through the speakers.

“Dr. Vale, we have been waiting for you.”
