Chapter 2 - The Story They PreparedThe ambulance arrived six minutes later.

He was wrong.

The last thing I remember before going over the second-floor balcony was Brandon Carter’s face.

Not angry.

Not frightened.

Determined.

That frightened me more than the fall itself.

“Give me the phone, Claire.”

His voice was strangely calm.

Behind him, his mother, Margaret Carter, stood beside the open French doors with a glass of white wine in one hand.

She looked almost bored.

“No,” I said.

Brandon stepped closer.

“Claire, you have no idea what you’re doing.”

“I know exactly what I’m doing.”

My phone felt heavy in my hand.

Inside it were photographs, bank records, emails, audio recordings, and one video that could destroy everything the Carter family had spent thirty years building.

Brandon glanced at his mother.

Margaret gave the smallest nod.

That was when I understood.

This was no longer an argument.

It was a decision they had already made.

I backed toward the railing.

“You transferred money from my father’s company,” I said. “Fourteen million dollars.”

Brandon’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand those transactions.”

“I understand forged signatures.”

Margaret finally spoke.

“Careful, Claire.”

Her voice was soft.

Almost maternal.

“You’re emotional.”

I laughed.

“You forged my dead father’s signature.”

“That is a very serious accusation.”

“I have proof.”

Brandon moved again.

I raised the phone.

“And tomorrow morning, the FBI gets all of it.”

His expression changed.

That was the moment the husband I had loved for eight years disappeared.

He lunged.

I turned.

His hand grabbed my wrist.

“Give it to me!”

“No!”

He twisted my arm.

I screamed.

The phone slipped.

I caught it with my other hand.

Margaret rushed toward us.

“Brandon!”

For one desperate second, I thought she was going to stop him.

Instead, she grabbed my shoulder.

“Take it from her!”

I stared at her.

That hesitation cost me.

Brandon shoved me.

Hard.

My back hit the balcony railing.

I felt open air behind me.

Then nothing.

I fell.

There wasn’t enough time to scream properly.

The sky flipped.

The balcony vanished.

The courtyard rushed upward.

I struck a canvas awning above the downstairs terrace, ripped through it, and slammed onto the stone patio below.

Pain exploded through my right side.

My phone landed several feet away.

The screen shattered.

The battery casing broke loose.

Pieces scattered across the stone.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Then I heard Margaret.

“She deserved it.”

I opened my eyes.

Two figures stood above me.

Brandon stared down from the balcony.

Margaret stood beside him.

Neither moved to help me.

Margaret looked at the broken phone.

Then she smiled.

“The evidence is gone.”

Brandon still looked pale.

“Mom…”

“Stop panicking.”

“She could be dead.”

“She’s moving.”

I tried to lift myself.

A bolt of pain tore through my ribs.

I collapsed again.

Margaret leaned over the railing.

“Claire?”

I looked up.

She gave me a cold smile.

“Even if you survive, nobody will believe you.”

Brandon finally found his voice.

“It was an accident.”

Margaret nodded.

“Exactly.”

Then she called down.

“You slipped.”

I tasted blood.

“You think… that’s going to work?”

Margaret’s smile widened.

“Your phone is destroyed.”

She was right about the phone.

She was wrong about the evidence.

I slowly moved my left hand toward the pocket sewn inside my dress.

Three hours earlier, I had copied everything.

Every transaction.

Every email.

Every recording.

Every hidden contract.

And the video.

Especially the video.

My fingers closed around the tiny metal object.

I pulled it free.

A silver USB drive no bigger than my thumb.

I raised it.

Margaret stopped smiling.

Brandon gripped the railing.

“What is that?”

I looked directly at him.

“Your future.”

Margaret’s glass slipped from her hand.

It shattered beside her feet.

Then she screamed.

“GET DOWN THERE!”

Brandon vanished from the balcony.

I heard footsteps pounding through the house.

My body begged me not to move.

But I moved anyway.

I dragged myself toward the garden gate.

Ten feet.

Nine.

Eight.

The back door burst open.

“Claire!”

Brandon was coming.

I crawled faster.

Then headlights swept across the courtyard wall.

A black sedan stopped outside the iron gate.

A man stepped from the passenger side.

Tall.

Gray suit.

Badge already in his hand.

“Claire Carter?”

Brandon froze behind me.

The man looked past me toward the house.

“Federal Agent Daniel Ruiz.”

Margaret appeared in the doorway.

Her face went white.

Agent Ruiz crouched beside me.

“Where’s the drive?”

My hand shook as I placed it in his palm.

“Everything is there.”

He closed his fingers around it.

Then I heard Brandon whisper behind us.

“What did you do?”

I looked at the man who had just tried to kill me.

May you like

And smiled.

“I made a backup.”
