Chapter 8 - THE BOARDROOM TRAPBy Monday morning, federal investigators had taken over much of the Hartford case.

But Theodore trusted almost nobody.

Especially after Agent Collins denied knowing Nathan.

Daniel Reeves quietly confirmed that Collins had access to several investigative databases related to Hartford.

Someone was leaking information.

Theodore believed Collins was that leak.

The federal team disagreed.

They said there was not enough evidence.

So Theodore made a decision.

He stopped waiting for authorities to solve everything.

At seventy-two years old, he had spent most of his career building regional manufacturing companies.

He understood executives.

He understood greed.

And more importantly, he understood how arrogant men behaved when they believed ordinary people were too frightened to challenge them.

Halpern and Vance wanted the Hartford board meeting.

Theodore intended to find out why.

Daniel discovered the agenda.

At 11:30 Tuesday, Hartford’s board would vote on an emergency restructuring.

The proposal involved selling a major logistics subsidiary.

Buyer: Meridian Holdings International.

Margaret stared at the paperwork.

“Meridian?”

“A related entity,” Daniel said.

“If approved, nearly $140 million in assets would transfer.”

Theodore understood.

Halpern and Vance were not simply stealing vendor rebates.

They were preparing to steal part of the company itself.

Nathan’s smaller fraud had been one layer of a much larger operation.

But Nathan knew.

That was why he became dangerous.

Tuesday morning arrived.

Elise refused to stay hidden.

“I’m going.”

Theodore shook his head.

“No.”

“My husband is missing because of this.”

“You have children.”

“Exactly.”

She stared at him.

“For nine months, everyone made decisions for me. Nathan decided what truth I could handle. Lawyers decided what I should sign. Creditors decided what I owed.”

She picked up her coat.

“I’m finished sitting in rooms waiting for men to tell me what happened to my life.”

Margaret almost smiled.

“That sounds reasonable to me.”

Theodore sighed.

So Elise went.

The board meeting was held at Hartford’s headquarters under increased security.

Margaret stayed with Ethan and Lily at the hotel.

At 11:18, Theodore and Elise entered the building with Daniel.

At 11:24, shareholders and board members took seats.

At 11:29, Richard Halpern walked into the room.

Everyone froze.

Police had been searching for him.

Yet Halpern entered through the main doors in a navy suit as though nothing had happened.

Security moved.

He raised both hands.

“I’m here voluntarily.”

His attorney followed.

Then Charles Vance entered.

Theodore stared.

This was too easy.

Halpern smiled across the room.

“Mr. Sinclair.”

Theodore hated the confidence in his face.

Police questioned both men.

They claimed they had been cooperating privately with federal investigators.

Agent Mark Collins appeared minutes later.

Theodore’s stomach dropped.

Collins shook Halpern’s hand.

There it was.

The connection.

But Daniel whispered, “Not enough.”

The meeting was allowed to continue under legal supervision.

Halpern presented the restructuring as necessary to save Hartford.

Vance displayed financial losses.

Board members looked frightened.

Then Theodore noticed something.

Every projection blamed Nathan.

Fraudulent loans.

Missing vendor funds.

Unauthorized accounts.

Nathan Sinclair had been constructed as the perfect villain.

A dishonest executive with a secret family who disappeared before arrest.

The story was believable.

Because much of it was true.

That was what made it powerful.

Elise whispered, “They’re putting everything on him.”

Theodore nodded.

Nathan had committed crimes.

But they planned to bury their larger ones beneath his.

At 11:46, Daniel received a message.

Unknown sender.

BASEMENT.

He showed Theodore.

Police warned against going.

Theodore went anyway.

With two officers.

In the underground parking level, they found an abandoned maintenance room.

Inside was a laptop.

A video call was open.

Nathan appeared on-screen.

Alive.

Margaret’s son looked badly injured.

Bruise across his face.

Split lip.

Hands bound.

Elise gasped.

“Nathan.”

His eyes widened.

“Elise?”

Then the camera shifted.

Richard Halpern’s prerecorded voice played.

“If you’re watching this during the board meeting, vote yes.”

Theodore stared.

The video was not live.

Nathan continued speaking from an earlier recording.

“They want the sale approved.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“Don’t do it.”

Then someone struck him.

Elise screamed.

The video cut.

An officer checked metadata.

Recorded that morning.

Nathan had been alive less than three hours earlier.

The laptop contained coordinates.

A warehouse.

Daniel checked.

Owned by Meridian.

Police rushed there.

Empty.

Again.

Only a chair.

Rope.

Blood.

And a phone.

Nathan’s phone.

On it was one unsent message.

ETHAN KNOWS.

Theodore stared.

“Knows what?”

Back at the hotel, Margaret found Ethan pacing.

When she asked, he denied knowing anything.

She showed him the message.

His face changed.

“Ethan.”

“I promised Dad.”

“You spoke to him?”

“Before he disappeared.”

Margaret felt faint.

“When?”

“The night you came.”

“What did he say?”

Ethan sat.

“He called me.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“He said if I told anyone, people could get hurt.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Another impossible burden placed on a child.

“What did he tell you?”

Ethan reached inside his backpack.

He removed a USB drive.

“Dad gave me this three months ago.”

Margaret stared.

“He told me it was school backup.”

“Did you open it?”

“Yesterday.”

“What’s on it?”

Ethan swallowed.

“A recording.”

Of Richard Halpern and Agent Collins.

Margaret’s heart began pounding.

They played it.

Halpern’s voice.

“We move Sinclair before Tuesday.”

Collins.

“And the family?”

Halpern.

“If the kid still has the drive, handle it.”

Margaret grabbed Ethan.

The recording continued.

Collins said, “The old man is becoming a problem too.”

Theodore.

The betrayal was complete.

A federal agent was protecting Halpern.

And Ethan possessed proof.

Suddenly the hotel fire alarm screamed.

Margaret froze.

Smoke appeared beneath the hallway door.

Security shouted outside.

“Evacuate!”

Ethan grabbed Lily.

Margaret opened the door.

Smoke filled the corridor.

Guests rushed toward stairs.

Then a man in a maintenance uniform appeared.

“This way!”

Margaret almost followed.

Then Ethan saw his face.

He had seen him before.

On Nathan’s files.

Agent Collins.

May you like

Ethan shouted.

“Run!”
