Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY HALLWAY

The next hour was the worst of my life.

Lily had disappeared from the warehouse.

There were cameras.

There were officers.

There were people everywhere.

And still, someone had taken her.

I blamed myself.

I should have been watching her.

I should never have trusted the quiet moment.

Then I remembered something.

The recorder.

The first recording had been labeled with Lily's birthday.

Victor had been watching her for years.

He knew her habits.

He knew where she hid.

He knew what frightened her.

But he had made one mistake.

He underestimated her.

Lily had left a trail.

A pink hair clip.

Then a small piece of purple fabric.

Then a drawing.

A house.

A tree.

And a black X.

Daniel stared at the drawing.

“That's the old Carter property.”

We drove there.

The house had been abandoned for years.

Inside, we found Victor.

And Lily.

She was tied to a chair.

But she wasn't crying.

She was staring at Victor.

“You're not my daddy,” she said.

Victor smiled.

“No.”

“You're the bad man.”

His smile disappeared.

I stepped into the room.

“Let her go.”

Victor turned.

“You.”

I stood between him and Lily.

“It's over.”

He laughed.

“You think the police will believe you?”

“They don't need to.”

Behind me, officers entered.

Victor raised his weapon.

I moved.

Daniel tackled him.

The gun went off.

The bullet struck the wall.

Lily screamed.

Victor was arrested.

But the story was not over.

Because the final evidence was not in the warehouse.

It was inside the little recorder Lily had carried in her backpack.

And when the police played the final file, everyone heard Victor confess.

Not to one crime.

To everything.
