Chapter 10 - What Forgiveness CostsDanielle cried when Evan told her.

No answer.

On the seventh, Evan picked up.

“Olivia?”

“Where is Danielle?”

A pause.

“Getting blood drawn.”

“Are you at the hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Do not leave.”

“What happened?”

“Ryan may be in New Haven.”

Silence.

Then Evan’s voice changed.

“I’ll get security.”

Nathaniel was already moving.

“I’ll have a car downstairs.”

“I’m going alone.”

“No.”

“Nathaniel—”

“You’re not going to successfully make that argument today.”

Thirty minutes later, we were heading north.

State police coordinated with hospital security.

Ryan had not been seen on official cameras.

That meant nothing.

He knew Danielle’s routines.

Her apartment.

Her favorite cafés.

Her doctor.

Every detail she had given him because she believed they were building a life together.

We reached St. Catherine Medical Center shortly after five.

Evan met us near a private entrance.

I hadn’t seen him in months.

He looked tired.

“Danielle is upstairs.”

“She okay?”

“Physically.”

That distinction carried weight.

“What about the test?”

“We’ll have preliminary results tomorrow.”

Nathaniel shook Evan’s hand.

Evan looked at me.

“Security searched the building. No Ryan.”

“Parking garage?”

“Checking.”

Danielle came around the corner.

When she saw me, relief crossed her face.

Then embarrassment.

“You came.”

“Apparently I’m developing a terrible habit of rescuing people who ruined my wedding.”

She almost smiled.

Then saw my expression.

“What?”

“Ryan took a train here.”

All color disappeared from her face.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Her hand moved protectively over her stomach.

Evan stepped beside her.

“He won’t get near you.”

Danielle glanced at him.

Something complicated passed between them.

They had loved each other once.

Maybe still did.

But neither seemed foolish enough to pretend love erased betrayal.

Good.

We moved Danielle to a secured family consultation room while officers searched the grounds.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then forty.

No Ryan.

I started wondering whether we had misread his destination.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph.

Danielle’s apartment building.

Taken from across the street.

Ryan.

I showed the others.

Evan swore.

“He’s there.”

Police units were dispatched.

Danielle whispered, “Why would he send you that?”

Another message arrived.

Tell her to come home.

I typed:

No.

His response:

Then I’ll come to her.

Nathaniel took the phone.

“Don’t engage.”

Danielle suddenly stood.

“I know what he wants.”

“What?”

“The documents.”

“What documents?”

Her eyes widened.

“Ryan gave me an envelope two weeks ago.”

I stared.

“And you didn’t think to mention this?”

“I forgot!”

“You forgot an envelope from my criminal fiancé?”

“It was sealed! He said it was an insurance policy and told me not to open it unless something happened to him.”

Evan looked incredulous.

“You kept it?”

“It’s in my apartment.”

Of course it was.

“What’s inside?” Nathaniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Where exactly?”

“Bedroom closet. Top shelf. Blue suitcase.”

Police were informed.

They entered the apartment building.

Ryan was not there.

The envelope was.

An officer opened it under authorization from Danielle.

Inside were copies of passport documents, bank credentials, and something far worse.

Signed statements.

False statements.

Several carried Danielle’s forged signature.

They claimed she had independently accessed Northstar systems.

Transferred confidential files.

Accepted money.

Ryan had prepared a scapegoat.

If his scheme succeeded, Danielle would appear responsible for the theft.

She sat down hard.

“He was going to blame me.”

“Yes.”

“I could go to prison.”

“Not if we prove the signatures were forged.”

“But I introduced him to Martin.”

“That complicates things.”

She began shaking.

Evan crouched beside her.

“Hey.”

Danielle looked at him.

“I was so stupid.”

“You made bad choices.”

“I destroyed everything.”

“No.”

He spoke firmly.

“You damaged things. That isn’t the same as everything being permanently destroyed.”

I recognized Nathaniel’s philosophy.

Difficult versus impossible.

Maybe decent men shared certain instincts.

My phone rang.

This time Ryan called directly.

I answered on speaker.

“Where are you?”

He laughed.

“Still trying to manage everyone, Olivia?”

“What do you want?”

“My envelope.”

“Police have it.”

Silence.

Then his tone changed.

“You opened it?”

“Yes.”

“You shouldn’t have.”

“You forged Danielle’s signature.”

“She gave me authority.”

Danielle shouted, “No, I didn’t!”

Ryan laughed softly.

“There you are.”

My skin chilled.

He knew she was with me.

Which meant he could hear her in person.

I looked toward the window.

Across the hospital courtyard stood another wing.

Roof access.

Windows.

Parking garage.

“Security,” I whispered.

Nathaniel immediately alerted them.

Ryan continued.

“You really brought Evan?”

Danielle froze.

“How do you know he’s here?”

“I know you.”

Evan stepped toward the windows.

I grabbed his arm.

“Stay away.”

Ryan’s voice became bitter.

“You always run back to him.”

Danielle stared at the phone.

“You told me to leave him.”

“Because he made you weak.”

“No.”

Her voice steadied.

“You wanted me isolated.”

Ryan went silent.

That was the first time she sounded stronger than him.

“You lied about Olivia.”

Silence.

“You lied about Megan.”

Still silence.

“You lied about the baby.”

Ryan finally answered.

“I gave you what you wanted.”

“No.”

“You wanted to beat her.”

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised him.

“I did.”

She looked at me.

“And I hate myself for it.”

Then she looked back toward the phone.

“But you used that.”

“You used me too.”

“Yes.”

Another truth.

“But I’m done.”

Ryan laughed.

“You think Evan wants you now?”

Evan answered.

“What I want is none of your business.”

Ryan’s breathing changed.

Anger.

Jealousy.

Possession.

Then a hospital alarm sounded.

Not fire.

Security.

A voice came through Nathaniel’s earpiece.

“Movement, east stairwell.”

Ryan hung up.

Everything exploded into motion.

Officers rushed toward the corridor.

Nathaniel moved me behind him.

I pushed back.

“I can walk.”

“Humor me.”

A door slammed outside.

Someone shouted.

Then Ryan appeared at the far end of the hall.

He looked wild.

Unshaven.

Blood dried along one sleeve.

His eyes found Danielle.

“Come with me.”

She stared.

“No.”

“Danielle.”

“No.”

He took one step.

Officers raised weapons.

Ryan stopped.

He held something in his hand.

Not a gun.

A syringe.

Evan’s face changed.

“What is that?”

Ryan laughed.

“Ask the doctor.”

Evan stared harder.

Then his expression turned serious.

“Ryan, put it down.”

“What is it?” I asked.

Evan answered quietly.

“Insulin.”

My stomach tightened.

Ryan was not diabetic.

But an overdose could be dangerous.

Ryan pressed the syringe against his own neck.

Danielle gasped.

“Don’t.”

“There,” he said. “You still care.”

“Ryan, put it down.”

“Come with me.”

“No.”

“Then watch.”

Danielle started forward.

Evan caught her.

“Don’t.”

Ryan smiled.

“You see? He controls you too.”

Danielle’s face transformed.

“No.”

Her fear disappeared.

“You don’t get to do that.”

Ryan blinked.

“You don’t get to threaten yourself and make me responsible.”

“Danielle—”

“You cheated on Megan. You lied to Olivia. You used me. You stole. You forged my name.”

Her voice broke.

“But what you do next is yours.”

Ryan stared at her.

The hallway became completely still.

Then Danielle said the sentence that finally ended his control.

“I’m not coming with you.”

His hand trembled.

For a moment, I thought he would inject himself.

Instead, the syringe dropped.

It clattered across the floor.

Officers rushed him.

Ryan fought.

Shouted.

Cursed.

But within seconds, he was restrained.

As they pulled him away, he looked at me.

“You ruined my life.”

I shook my head.

“No, Ryan.”

Then I looked at my sister.

“We just stopped letting you ruin ours.”

The elevator doors closed on him.

Danielle collapsed into Evan’s arms.

I stepped backward.

Nathaniel stood beside me.

“Is it over?”

He looked toward the elevators.

“This part is.”

My phone buzzed.

A message from Amelia.

Federal investigators had frozen the Swiss account.

The stolen funds were safe.

Northstar was secure.

Martin had agreed to cooperate.

Ryan Prescott was finally in custody.

For the first time in seventy-two hours, nobody was running.

Then Evan’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression shifted.

He looked at Danielle.

“The test results came early.”

Danielle stopped breathing.

“So?”

Evan looked at the screen.

Then at her.

May you like

“The baby is mine.”

And somehow, that answer created an entirely new beginning.
