Chapter 4 - The Secret Robert Took to His GraveThe address belonged to an abandoned textile warehouse outside Raleigh.

I stood.

“Where is she going?”

Vanessa rushed toward the door.

“Brooke!”

Daniel caught her arm.

“Wait.”

“She has my phone.”

Silence.

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

Vanessa searched the pockets of her dress.

“My phone. Brooke borrowed it before the party. She said hers was dead.”

Marcus swore under his breath.

Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.

“Security.”

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if Brooke thinks we know—”

“Know what?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

When she opened them, she looked twenty years older.

“My family has been using me.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Using you how?”

She looked at me.

“You hate me.”

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”

Her mouth trembled.

“But after what I did outside—”

“What you did outside told me something ugly about your character. It did not answer what’s happening here.”

That surprised her.

She took a breath.

“My father is drowning in debt.”

Daniel frowned.

“Your father owns three hotels.”

“On paper.”

Vanessa looked toward the door.

“The hotels are leveraged. The houses are leveraged. Even my parents’ cars are financed. Dad lost millions in a private investment fund six years ago and spent the next five pretending everything was fine.”

Daniel looked stunned.

“You told me your family was worth seventy million dollars.”

“They used to be.”

“And Brooke?”

“She knows everything.”

Vanessa sat down.

“Brooke always handled the family finances. She convinced Dad that his only way out was development contracts.”

Daniel looked toward Marcus.

“Ridgeway.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Brooke started working with them eighteen months ago.”

“Why would they pay you?”

“They didn’t.”

She pointed toward the bank records.

“Those accounts are mine in name only.”

I understood.

“Identity documents?”

Vanessa nodded.

“When I was twenty-six, Brooke asked me to sign paperwork for a consulting company. She said it was for event contracts. I barely looked.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You didn’t notice one hundred sixty-five thousand dollars?”

“I never had access to that account.”

“That seems impossible.”

“It’s not if someone controls the login, statements, and registered address.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then why did transfers originate using your credentials today?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“My phone has authentication apps.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“And you handed it to Brooke.”

“She’s my sister.”

“So was Judas somebody’s friend,” Marcus muttered.

I almost smiled despite everything.

Daniel didn’t.

He dialed security.

“Lock the gates.”

Marcus stared at him.

“What?”

“No vehicles leave.”

Vanessa panicked.

“Daniel, if you trap Brooke here—”

“If your sister stole two million dollars from my company, she isn’t driving away.”

Marcus made another call.

I watched Vanessa.

Her hands were trembling badly.

“Why didn’t you tell Daniel any of this before?”

She looked at me.

“Because Brooke knows something about me.”

“What?”

Her eyes dropped.

“When I was twenty-two, I caused a car accident.”

Daniel stared.

“You told me that.”

“Not all of it.”

Vanessa’s voice became almost inaudible.

“I had been drinking.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“No one died,” she said quickly. “But a woman was badly injured.”

“What happened?”

“My father paid someone to make the blood test disappear.”

Daniel stepped backward.

“And Brooke has proof.”

“Yes.”

“So she blackmailed you?”

“At first, just to stay quiet.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

“What did she make you do?”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Introduce her to people. Bring her to events. Tell her about your work.”

Daniel went still.

“You told her about my company.”

“I never gave her documents.”

“But you discussed things.”

“Yes.”

“What things?”

“Clients. Meetings. Schedules.”

Marcus cursed again.

Daniel walked to the window.

Outside, guests were beginning to whisper.

Security men moved quietly toward the driveway.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Yeah?”

His expression hardened.

“What do you mean gone?”

He listened.

Then looked at Vanessa.

“Brooke’s car is still here.”

Vanessa stood.

“Then where is she?”

Daniel ended the call.

“She’s not on the property.”

Marcus frowned.

“How does someone disappear from a gated estate?”

I knew.

“The service entrance.”

They looked at me.

“When I walked in, I saw catering trucks behind the hedge.”

Daniel immediately called security again.

Vanessa headed for the door.

This time nobody stopped her.

We crossed the lawn.

Guests watched silently.

The garden hose still lay where Vanessa had dropped it.

Water had pooled in the grass where she had humiliated me.

She glanced at it.

Shame crossed her face.

“Mrs. Mercer…”

“Not now.”

She nodded.

We reached the service gate.

One catering van was missing.

Daniel’s security chief approached us.

“Camera caught it leaving eight minutes ago.”

“Driver?”

“Female.”

Vanessa whispered, “Brooke.”

“Can you track the plate?”

“We’re working on it.”

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“We need police.”

Daniel nodded.

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

“If police get involved, Brooke releases the accident files.”

Daniel stared at her.

“A woman was badly injured because you drove drunk.”

Vanessa recoiled.

“You should have faced consequences then.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“Your father covered it up.”

“Yes.”

“And that secret allowed Brooke to control you for twelve years.”

“Yes.”

Daniel removed her hand from his sleeve.

“Maybe the truth is overdue.”

Vanessa began crying quietly.

I looked at her.

The same woman who had sprayed me with a hose less than an hour earlier now looked utterly broken.

I did not pity her.

Not yet.

But I understood something important.

Cruel people are sometimes victims too.

That does not erase their cruelty.

It only complicates the story.

Daniel called the police.

Within twenty minutes, detectives arrived.

Guests were interviewed.

Phones were collected voluntarily from employees with project access.

The engagement party dissolved into chaos.

By sunset, the flowers were still beautiful, the champagne was still cold, and the wedding was apparently dead.

I changed clothes in a guest room.

When I returned downstairs, Daniel was alone in the kitchen.

He sat at the island holding his father’s watch.

I sat beside him.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For coming like this.”

He laughed without humor.

“Mom, you got sprayed with a hose.”

“I chose the disguise.”

“You didn’t choose her reaction.”

“No.”

He stared at the watch.

“I really loved her.”

“I know.”

“Part of me still does.”

“I know that too.”

He looked at me.

“Do you think I’m stupid?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

“About Brooke? No. About Vanessa’s behavior toward people she considered beneath her? I had heard enough to be concerned.”

He rubbed his eyes.

“Mrs. Alvarez called you.”

I smiled.

“You always were too smart.”

“She told you?”

“She told me Vanessa had insulted staff, withheld tips, and once made a delivery driver wait outside in the rain because his boots were muddy.”

Daniel looked sick.

“I never saw that.”

“That was the point.”

He sat quietly.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Daniel opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

“What?”

He handed it to me.

There was a photograph.

Brooke standing beside a private jet.

Under it:

Tell Vanessa the next secret costs more than a wedding.

Another message appeared.

This one contained an address.

And beneath it:

Ask your mother why Robert Mercer visited this place three days before he died.

Daniel went completely still.

Robert.

My husband.

His father.

Dead sixteen years.

Daniel slowly turned toward me.

“Mom?”

I stared at the address.

And suddenly the room seemed to disappear.

Because I knew that place.

I had spent sixteen years pretending I didn’t.

Daniel whispered:

“What does Dad have to do with Vanessa’s family?”

I closed my eyes.

Far too late, I realized Brooke had not disappeared because she was afraid of us.

May you like

She had disappeared because she wanted us to follow.

And whatever she was leading us toward had begun long before Daniel ever met Vanessa.
