Chapter 4 – The Girl with Secrets

The name lingered in the hospital room like poison.
Salvatore DeLuca.
No one spoke for several seconds after Lily lost consciousness again.
The heart monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
But the sound did nothing to ease the tension tightening the room.
Marco broke the silence first.
“You’re sure she said Salvatore?”
Vincent’s gray eyes never left Lily.
“Yes.”
Marco exhaled slowly.
That changed everything.
Salvatore DeLuca was not merely an enemy.
Salvatore DeLuca
He was a ghost from the bloodiest years of New York’s underground war.
Twenty years ago, Salvatore had nearly destroyed the Moretti Family empire by infiltrating supply chains, corrupting officials, and eliminating allies one by one. He was patient, cruel, and disturbingly intelligent.
And worst of all—
He never attacked without purpose.
If Salvatore wanted Lily, then Lily was important.
Dangerously important.
Marco lowered his voice.
“What now?”
Vincent finally turned.
The cold in his expression made Marco straighten instinctively.
“Double security.”
Marco nodded.
“Done.”
“No one enters this floor without my approval.”
“Understood.”
Vincent looked once more at Lily.
Bandages wrapped her fragile body.
Bruises bloomed beneath pale skin.
Yet somehow she remained the center of a storm large enough to restart a war.
He spoke quietly.
“Wake up, Lily.”
Marco blinked.
Vincent rarely spoke like that.
Not soft.
Not human.
Not vulnerable.
“Because I’m done fighting shadows.”
Three days passed.
Lily improved slowly.
The ventilator was removed.
Her breathing stabilized.
The head trauma no longer threatened immediate catastrophe.
But weakness clung to her body like chains.
She slept often.
Spoke little.
Every time she woke, Vincent was there.
Sometimes standing near the window.
Sometimes reading reports.
Sometimes simply watching the monitors.
Always present.
By the fourth morning, Lily woke fully.
Sunlight filtered through half-closed blinds.
The sterile smell of disinfectant hit first.
Then pain.
Deep.
Burning.
Her shoulder screamed when she tried moving.
A broken gasp escaped her.
Instantly—
A voice came.
“Don’t.”
Low.
Controlled.
Male.
Lily froze.
Her eyes shifted.
Vincent sat beside the bed.
Dark suit.
Sleeves rolled.
No tie.
He looked exhausted.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
That shocked her more than anything.
“Mr. Moretti…”
Her voice cracked.
He stood immediately.
“Water.”
He poured a glass and carefully helped her drink.
The gesture stunned her.
Vincent Moretti did not care for servants.
Vincent Moretti barely acknowledged servants.
Yet here he was.
Holding water to her lips with careful precision.
She swallowed.
Pain sharpened memory.
Glass exploding.
Gunfire.
Matteo crying.
Her eyes widened.
“Matteo.”
“He’s safe.”
She exhaled.
The tension draining from her body was immediate.
Vincent noticed.
Of course he noticed.
Even half-dead—
Her first thought was still his son.
Lily closed her eyes.
Thank God.
Then another thought struck.
Emma.
Her eyes snapped open.
“Emma!”
“She’s safe.”
The words came before panic could consume her.
Lily stared.
“What?”
Vincent’s gaze held hers.
“She was taken.”
Cold dread surged.
“No—”
“I got her back.”
Lily stopped breathing.
For a second, silence swallowed everything.
Then tears welled instantly.
Relief.
Fear.
Exhaustion.
All at once.
“She’s alive?”
“Yes.”
Lily’s shoulders shook.
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
She tried wiping them but failed.
Vincent moved without thinking.
His hand lifted.
Thumb brushing tears from her skin.
The contact froze them both.
Warm skin.
Soft skin.
Too intimate.
Too dangerous.
Lily’s breath hitched.
Vincent’s hand lingered one second too long.
Then he withdrew.
Slowly.
His voice hardened again.
“Who is Salvatore?”
Silence.
The softness vanished.
Lily stared at him.
Fear returned.
Not fear of Vincent.
Fear of the question.
She looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Vincent’s jaw tightened.
“Don’t lie.”
“I’m not.”
“Yes, you are.”
She swallowed.
Her pulse quickened.
The monitor betrayed her.
Beep.
Beep.
Faster.
Vincent stepped closer.
“Lily.”
His voice lowered.
“You said his name in terror.”
Silence.
“You reacted the moment you heard DeLuca.”
Another step.
“Why?”
Lily’s hands trembled.
Because she knew.
Because she remembered.
Not clearly.
Not completely.
Fragments.
Always fragments.
Her father locking doors.
Whispers at night.
Her mother crying.
Gunshots in the distance.
Running.
Always running.
She whispered.
“My father used to train me.”
Vincent waited.
“He said one thing every morning.”
She shut her eyes.
“Be faster than fear.”
Vincent recognized discipline.
Conditioning.
Programming for survival.
“Why?”
Her lips trembled.
“Because he believed someone would come.”
“For what?”
Her voice broke.
“For me.”
Silence.
Vincent felt something dark settle into certainty.
“Who?”
Lily opened her eyes.
Green met gray.
Raw fear lived there.
“I don’t know.”
Vincent studied her.
Truth.
At least partial truth.
She continued.
“My father never told me everything.”
Her breathing shook.
“He only said if men with serpent tattoos came…”
Vincent stilled.
Serpent.
Exactly the mark from Emma’s kidnappers.
Lily whispered.
“…I must run.”
The room went cold.
Vincent’s voice dropped.
“Why?”
Lily gave the answer that chilled even him.
“He said if they found me…”
A pause.
“They would kill everyone near me.”
Silence.
Vincent’s face hardened.
Too late.
They already had come.
And they already had attacked.
Not just Lily.
Matteo.
His son.
His family.
His empire.
This was personal now.
Very personal.
Lily suddenly grabbed his wrist.
Unexpectedly strong despite injury.
“No.”
Vincent looked down.
Her eyes filled with desperate urgency.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then help me understand.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“You need to let me go.”
The sentence stunned him.
“What?”
She swallowed hard.
“I can’t stay near Matteo.”
“No.”
Her grip tightened.
“If Salvatore found me, he’ll come again.”
“Let him.”
She stared.
Did he hear himself?
“Vincent—”
“I said no.”
The room changed.
Air sharpened.
Predatory calm returned.
Iron Wolf.
Full force.
Lily felt it.
Danger.
Authority.
Power.
Vincent bent slightly until their faces were inches apart.
His gray eyes became glacial.
“No one takes what is under my protection.”
Her heartbeat exploded.
The words shouldn’t affect her.
They did.
Because beneath the danger—
There was something terrifyingly sincere.
He meant it.
Every word.
Lily shook her head.
“You don’t know what you’re promising.”
Vincent’s voice became quieter.
More dangerous.
“Try me.”
Silence.
Her heart pounded.
This man frightened everyone.
And yet—
For the first time since childhood—
Lily felt safe.
That realization terrified her.
More than Salvatore.
More than bullets.
More than pain.
Safe.
With Vincent.
Dangerous.
Impossible.
Wrong.
She whispered:
“Why are you doing this?”
Vincent didn’t answer immediately.
Because he didn’t know how.
How to explain why a maid’s suffering clawed under his skin.
How to explain why leaving this room felt impossible.
How to explain why seeing her bleed had shattered something buried since Isabella died.
Finally he answered.
Honest.
Brutal.
“Because I almost lost you.”
Silence.
Lily stopped breathing.
The words hit harder than any confession.
Not romantic.
Not polished.
Raw truth.
Vincent stared at her.
“You nearly died protecting my son.”
His voice roughened.
“You bled in my arms.”
A pause.
“And I hated how helpless I felt.”
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t do helpless.”
Lily’s eyes burned.
Emotion swelled dangerously.
Before either could speak—
The door opened.
Marco entered fast.
Urgent.
Wrong.
Vincent turned instantly.
“What?”
Marco’s face was grim.
“Security breach.”
Every muscle in Vincent’s body locked.
“Where?”
Marco held up a sealed evidence bag.
Inside—
A black envelope.
Marked with a serpent.
Lily went pale.
No.
No.
Impossible.
Marco spoke quietly.
“This was left at the hospital entrance.”
Vincent took it.
Opened it.
Read.
His expression changed.
Lethal.
He handed it to Lily.
Her shaking fingers unfolded the letter.
Five words.
Nothing else.
No signature needed.
The message read:
I know you’re awake, Lily.
Her blood ran cold.
Below the words—
One final line.
Tell Vincent the past remembers.
Lily’s hands began shaking uncontrollably.
No.
Salvatore knew.
He knew she survived.
He knew where she was.
He knew about Vincent.
War was no longer approaching.
War had arrived.
Vincent slowly turned toward the window.
Manhattan glittered beyond the glass.
Beautiful.
Fragile.
Unaware.
Then he spoke.
Voice like death.
“Call every captain.”
Marco straightened.
“Yes, boss.”
Vincent’s eyes hardened into steel.
“We hunt first.”
He looked back at Lily.
At the frightened woman now trapped in his world.
“No one threatens what’s mine.”
Lily’s breath caught.
Mine.
The word echoed.
Possessive.
Terrifying.
Protective.
May you like
And for reasons she could not understand—
A dangerous warmth spread through the fear.
