Chapter 11 - The Truth After the CrisisClaire did ask Ethan about his marriage.

Not for everything.

Not yet.

British authorities initially detained him on suspicion of conspiracy, document fraud, unlawful imprisonment connected to Thomas Bennett, and offenses involving the interference with Claire’s passport.

Further charges would depend on evidence.

Richard still believed he could survive.

Men like him often did.

For decades he had built walls between himself and consequences.

Shell companies.

Professional intermediaries.

Doctors paid through consulting firms.

Attorneys who never asked the right questions.

Employees told only enough to complete their part.

And victims taught to doubt themselves.

But one wall had cracked.

Victor Shaw.

Detective Grant interviewed him for six hours.

He described payments.

Meetings.

Instructions.

Documents.

The sedatives purchased through a private medical supplier.

Surveillance on Claire.

Manipulation of Margaret’s finances.

The plan to make Claire appear unstable during the flight.

Even the seat assignment.

Richard’s team had used an airline service contact to move Ethan into 31B after researching him as an “uninvolved, low-risk traveler.”

Ethan laughed when he learned that phrase.

“Low-risk?”

Claire smiled.

“Apparently you underperformed expectations.”

“Story of my life.”

They were sitting in a quiet airport hotel room.

Margaret was asleep in the adjoining suite.

Thomas was with police.

Rebecca was reviewing the trust.

For the first time, Claire and Ethan were alone.

Actually alone.

No Richard watching.

No crew.

No police.

No fake reason to sit close.

The silence became awkward.

Claire looked at the ring on Ethan’s finger.

“You can take that off now.”

He looked at it.

“Can I?”

“You’ve completed the ten-hour contract.”

“Was there a retirement plan?”

“Terrible benefits.”

“No dental?”

“Absolutely not.”

He smiled.

Then slipped the ring off.

Claire expected relief.

Instead, the empty place on his hand made her strangely sad.

She looked away.

Ethan noticed.

He set the ring on the table.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“What happens after this?”

She laughed softly.

“I was hoping you knew.”

“With Richard?”

“With us.”

There.

The question neither had earned the right to ask after one impossible day.

Ethan considered it carefully.

“We met twelve hours ago.”

“I know.”

“You accused me of being your husband.”

“Asked.”

“You installed jewelry without consent.”

“Emergency procedure.”

“We survived an international financial conspiracy.”

“Very romantic.”

“And I still don’t know your favorite movie.”

Claire smiled.

“Roman Holiday.”

“Interesting.”

“Yours?”

“Jaws.”

She stared.

“That’s deeply concerning.”

He laughed.

Then she became serious.

“I don’t want what happened today to trick us into thinking something exists just because everything was intense.”

Ethan nodded.

“Neither do I.”

“But…”

“But?”

“I would like to find out whether something exists when nobody’s trying to steal my passport.”

He smiled.

“I’d like that too.”

A knock came.

Reality returned.

Rebecca entered.

Her expression was grim.

“We have a problem.”

Claire stood.

“What?”

“Richard requested to speak with you.”

“No.”

“I agree.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“He made an offer.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“What kind?”

“He’ll provide access to offshore accounts and documentation tying Danvers and several others to the fraud network.”

“In exchange for?”

Rebecca looked at Claire.

“Margaret refuses to testify against him.”

Claire laughed in disbelief.

“No.”

“He also wants Victor excluded from any cooperation agreement.”

Ethan understood.

“He’s afraid of Victor.”

“Yes.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“Then he should be.”

Rebecca nodded.

“There’s more.”

Of course there was.

“Richard claims he knows what happened to your father.”

The room changed.

Claire stared.

“My father?”

“He says James Bennett’s death wasn’t accidental.”

Ethan moved closer to Claire.

Rebecca continued.

“He says he’ll identify the person responsible if Margaret agrees not to cooperate.”

Claire’s voice broke.

“He wants my mother’s silence in exchange for telling us who killed my father?”

“Yes.”

Claire walked to the window.

Planes moved beyond the glass.

For twenty-one years, her father’s death had been a tragic accident.

Now Richard was dangling the truth like currency.

“I want to talk to him.”

Ethan said, “Claire.”

“I need to.”

Rebecca studied her.

“Police will monitor it.”

“I’m going.”

The interview took place at a police facility near Heathrow.

Richard sat behind reinforced glass.

No expensive suit jacket.

No polished first-class authority.

Just a white shirt and a face that suddenly looked older.

Claire sat opposite him.

Ethan watched from the observation room with Rebecca.

Richard picked up the phone.

Claire did the same.

“Hello, Claire.”

“Who killed my father?”

No greeting.

No negotiation.

Richard smiled.

“You’re becoming direct.”

“Who?”

“You know your mother will suffer through a trial.”

“I asked about my father.”

“Margaret is fragile.”

“Because you drugged her.”

“I cared for her.”

“You controlled her.”

“I protected her from people who wanted her money.”

Claire laughed.

“You mean you?”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t understand the world your father belonged to.”

“Then explain it.”

Richard leaned closer to the glass.

“James thought morality protected him.”

“No. He thought law mattered.”

“Same weakness.”

Claire felt ice in her chest.

“You hated him.”

“I respected him.”

“Who killed him?”

Richard looked at her for a long time.

Then whispered:

“Daniel Danvers.”

Claire stopped breathing.

In the observation room, Rebecca stiffened.

Richard continued.

“Danvers tampered with James’s vehicle.”

“Why?”

“Because your father was preparing to testify.”

“Did you order it?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

Richard hesitated.

Claire saw it.

“Did you know?”

“I learned afterward.”

“You covered it up.”

“I protected everyone.”

“You protected yourself.”

Richard sighed.

“Claire, if I had wanted your father dead, why would I spend twenty years staying away from your family?”

She stared.

Then something clicked.

“You didn’t stay away.”

Richard said nothing.

“You waited.”

His expression changed.

Claire leaned closer.

“You waited until my mother was alone.”

Richard’s eyes became cold.

She finally saw the full shape of it.

Richard had not randomly met Margaret.

He had returned to the Bennett family deliberately.

Maybe for revenge.

Maybe for money.

Probably both.

“You came back because Dad beat you.”

Richard laughed quietly.

“Your father delayed me.”

“And after he died, you spent years figuring out how to take everything from us.”

“I built something from nothing.”

“You built it by stealing.”

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You sound like him.”

“Good.”

That word wounded Richard more than anything else.

He sat back.

“You think Ethan Cole is going to stay?”

Claire froze.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“The doubt.”

Claire gripped the phone.

“You know nothing about him.”

“I know everything my investigators found.”

“No. You know paperwork.”

“He was divorced.”

“So?”

“His wife left him.”

Claire said nothing.

“He didn’t tell you?”

“I didn’t ask.”

“She said he was emotionally unavailable. Addicted to crisis. Needed to rescue people because normal relationships bored him.”

Claire’s heart shifted painfully.

Richard saw it.

“He doesn’t love you.”

“I didn’t say he did.”

“He loves emergencies.”

Claire stared at him.

“You’re trying to isolate me again.”

Richard smiled.

“Am I wrong?”

She thought about Ethan.

The stranger who stayed.

The man who never demanded she trust him.

Who told her she was free to choose.

Claire smiled.

Richard frowned.

“You made the same mistake with me that you made with my mother.”

“What mistake?”

“You thought doubt had to disappear before we could act.”

She stood.

“It doesn’t.”

Richard’s smile vanished.

Claire placed the phone down.

The interview was over.

As she left, Richard shouted through the glass.

“Claire!”

She turned once.

“Ask Ethan why his marriage ended!”

Claire looked at him.

“No.”

Richard stared.

“I’ll ask Ethan whatever I want.”

May you like

She opened the door.

“But I’ll never ask you who I’m supposed to trust again.”
