Chapter 9 - She Chose to StayLuca reached Emily’s guest room in seconds.

“Marco.”

Marco stepped inside slowly.

“What is he talking about?”

Marco looked at Vincent.

Then at Luca.

“Boss…”

Luca’s voice became quiet.

“What is he talking about?”

Marco closed his eyes.

“There are files.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

Luca stared at the man who had been beside him for twelve years.

“What files?”

“Financial records. Operations. Old orders.”

“You recorded me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marco hesitated.

“Peter.”

Anthony’s father.

Vincent laughed from the floor.

“Your uncle wasn’t stupid.”

Luca grabbed him by the shirt.

“Explain.”

“Peter kept evidence on everybody. Including you.”

“I was barely twenty-one when he died.”

“Evidence grows.”

Vincent smiled.

“Anthony inherited the files.”

Luca looked at Marco.

“How do you know?”

“Anthony told me after Connecticut.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“You were trying to get back to Emily.”

Luca’s eyes flashed.

“That wasn’t your decision.”

“I know.”

Vincent coughed.

“Touching.”

Luca struck him once.

Emily said, “Luca.”

He stopped.

Vincent grinned.

“She controls you already.”

Emily stood despite the pain.

“No. He listens to me.”

The distinction silenced the room.

Luca looked at her.

Emily walked toward him.

“Don’t kill Moretti.”

“He kidnapped you.”

“I know.”

“He beat you.”

“I know.”

“He tried to kill your brother.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

“Because dead men don’t answer questions.”

Luca’s breathing slowed.

Emily continued.

“And because I don’t want the rest of your life destroyed for giving him exactly what he deserves.”

Vincent smirked.

Luca looked down at him.

“You should thank her.”

“I’d rather die.”

“Not tonight.”

Moretti was taken alive.

The problem was what to do next.

By dawn, Luca’s organization faced collapse.

Anthony confirmed the existence of the archive before surgeons took him into emergency surgery.

He survived the Connecticut shooting.

Barely.

From his hospital bed, he revealed that Peter had maintained extensive records on DeLuca operations, political connections, and violent acts committed during Luca’s early years.

Some were real.

Some were fabricated.

All were dangerous.

Moretti had stolen copies.

If Luca attacked him openly, automated releases would send the files to federal prosecutors and journalists.

Emily sat in Luca’s office beneath a borrowed sweater while he listened to attorneys argue.

“Disappear for six months,” one suggested.

Luca laughed without humor.

“To where?”

“Europe.”

“Federal prosecutors have heard of Europe.”

Another attorney leaned forward.

“We can negotiate.”

“With what?”

“Information.”

Luca’s face darkened.

“You want me to become an informant.”

“I want you to avoid prison.”

Emily watched him from across the room.

Every man offered Luca a way to preserve himself.

Nobody asked whether preserving the organization was worth it.

After the meeting, she remained.

Luca poured bourbon.

“You’re staring.”

“I’m thinking.”

“Dangerous habit.”

“What happens if those files come out?”

“I’m indicted.”

“For what?”

“Conspiracy. Racketeering. Tax violations.”

“Murder?”

Luca hesitated.

“Possibly.”

Emily’s chest tightened.

“Did you?”

He looked at her.

“Did I kill people?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

She appreciated that he didn’t lie.

“People like Moretti?”

“Some.”

“People who didn’t deserve it?”

Luca stared into his glass.

“When I was younger, I convinced myself everyone in this life chose their risks.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Emily waited.

Finally Luca said, “I’ve made decisions I would not make now.”

“Do you regret them?”

“Every night.”

She believed him.

“What if you stopped?”

He frowned.

“Stopped what?”

“All of it.”

A short laugh escaped him.

“That isn’t how this works.”

“Why?”

“You don’t resign from an organization like mine.”

“You’re the boss.”

“Which means if I walk away, twenty men start killing each other tomorrow.”

“So change it.”

“I’ve spent fifteen years changing it.”

“Then finish.”

Luca stared at her.

Emily stepped closer.

“You keep telling yourself you’re protecting people by controlling everything. Maybe you were. Maybe you still are. But if your empire requires you to become someone you hate, what exactly are you protecting?”

He said nothing.

“My father protected your father’s secret for seventeen years.”

“I know.”

“He didn’t do it so you could inherit the same nightmare.”

Luca looked away.

“You make complicated things sound simple.”

“They’re not simple.”

Emily touched the bandage at her side.

“But sometimes the choice is.”

“What choice?”

“Decide what kind of man walks out of this.”

Luca looked at her.

“And if the answer costs me everything?”

She smiled sadly.

“Then maybe it wasn’t worth owning.”

Later that day, Anthony requested to see Luca.

The hospital room was guarded.

Anthony looked pale.

Machines surrounded him.

Luca stood beside the bed.

“You saved my life.”

Anthony shrugged weakly.

“Terrible timing.”

“Why?”

“I figured dying heroically might improve my reputation.”

“It didn’t.”

Anthony smiled.

Then became serious.

“Vincent has the files.”

“So you said.”

“I gave them to him.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“But I kept the master key.”

“What key?”

“Encryption.”

Anthony reached under the blanket and removed a tiny drive.

“Everything Peter collected.”

Luca took it.

“Why give this to me?”

“Because my father ruined both of us.”

Luca looked at him.

Anthony’s eyes filled.

“I spent my whole life believing he deserved what Frank had. That you stole something from me.”

“Anthony—”

“I was wrong.”

The words barely came.

“I was angry at you for surviving better.”

Luca looked away.

Anthony continued.

“Vincent’s automated release depends on a server in Montreal. That drive lets you shut it down.”

Luca stared at the object in his palm.

“So I can destroy the evidence.”

“Yes.”

Anthony smiled faintly.

“You can save the empire.”

Luca closed his fingers around the drive.

That evening, he returned to the penthouse.

Emily stood by the window.

“What will you do?”

Luca held up the drive.

“I can erase everything.”

She nodded.

“Will you?”

He looked out across Manhattan.

Fifteen years.

Hundreds of millions of dollars.

Companies.

Properties.

Men who obeyed his name.

Fear disguised as power.

Then he remembered his father begging him to leave.

He remembered Emily bleeding in his arms.

He remembered Anthony on the ground.

“No.”

Emily turned.

Luca placed the drive on the table.

“I’m not erasing it.”

“What are you doing?”

“Giving it to my attorneys.”

“Why?”

“To negotiate surrender.”

Emily stared.

“You could go to prison.”

“Possibly.”

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

She walked toward him.

“You don’t have to do this because of something I said.”

“I’m not.”

“Then why?”

“Because my father was trying to dismantle this before he died.”

Luca looked at the old ledger.

“I spent seventeen years believing I was honoring him by protecting what he built.”

“And now?”

“Now I think I was protecting what killed him.”

Emily’s eyes softened.

“What happens to Moretti?”

“We give federal prosecutors everything on him too.”

“You’d testify?”

“Yes.”

“Against your own organization?”

“Against anyone who deserves it.”

Emily reached for his hand.

His scarred fingers intertwined with hers.

“Are you scared?”

“Yes.”

It was the first time she heard him admit it.

She stepped closer.

“So am I.”

Luca touched her cheek.

“Emily.”

“Yes?”

“If I do this, you need to leave.”

Her heart dropped.

“What?”

“Moretti has allies. Men in my organization will call me a traitor.”

“So?”

“So staying near me makes you a target.”

“I’m already a target.”

“I won’t gamble with your life.”

“You don’t get to decide for me.”

His face hardened.

“I do when the alternative is your funeral.”

Emily pulled her hand away.

“There it is.”

“What?”

“Control.”

“Emily.”

“You want to become a different man? Start by letting other people choose.”

She walked toward the door.

Luca called her name.

She stopped but did not turn.

“You saved me when I couldn’t stand.”

Her voice shook.

“But that doesn’t mean I belong to you.”

“I never said you did.”

“Then stop deciding what happens to me.”

She left.

Luca stood alone.

An hour later, Marco entered.

“Boss, Moretti escaped transport.”

Luca spun.

“How?”

“Convoy was hit.”

“Where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

Luca reached for his phone.

May you like

Then Marco said the words he feared most.

“Emily’s gone too.”
