Chapter 8 - A FATHER BY BLOODVictor chose an abandoned lakeside casino in Indiana.

For twenty-three years, she had been publicly known as Evelyn Hartwell, philanthropist, shipping heiress, federal advisory-board member, and generous donor to enough political campaigns that her name appeared on hospital wings and university buildings.

Before that, Isabella explained, she had been Evelyn Kane.

Victor Sloane’s partner.

Not romantic.

Worse.

Financial.

“Victor built the criminal network,” Isabella said. “Evelyn made it invisible.”

Matteo stared at the photograph.

“How?”

“She came from money. Banks trusted her. Politicians attended her parties. When Victor needed freight moved, she supplied companies. When he needed investigations buried, she found people willing to bury them.”

“And Antonio?”

“Discovered she was the center.”

Elena sat nearby.

“Then why does Victor act like he’s in charge?”

“Because Victor believes power comes from fear.”

Isabella looked at the image.

“Evelyn knows it comes from paperwork.”

Elena understood immediately.

“That’s why she wanted me.”

Matteo looked at her.

“You found the accounting trail.”

“I found her.”

Pier 19 was obviously a trap.

They went anyway.

Not because Cross mattered enough to surrender Elena.

Because Matteo had spent two decades waiting for the people responsible for Antonio’s death to step into daylight.

Now two of them finally had.

The plan was simple.

Which meant it would become complicated within minutes.

Luca positioned teams on neighboring roofs.

A private extraction boat waited beneath the pier.

Matteo wore a recording device.

Elena refused to remain behind.

“If Evelyn thinks I have something, I need to know what.”

“You almost died two nights ago.”

“And hiding hasn’t worked.”

“It might if you actually tried it.”

She looked at him.

“You know that’s not why you want me behind.”

Matteo said nothing.

“You care about me.”

“Unfortunately.”

Elena smiled.

“Good.”

“Why good?”

“Because I care about you too.”

That was the worst possible time for the conversation.

And somehow the only honest one.

Matteo touched her cheek.

“If this ends badly—”

“It won’t.”

“You can’t know that.”

“No.”

She held his gaze.

“But I know I’m not spending whatever time I have left being afraid of something I want.”

Then she kissed him.

Briefly.

Softly.

Enough to rearrange his entire nervous system.

When she pulled away, Matteo stared.

“What?”

“You have terrible timing.”

“So do criminals.”

At 11:58 p.m., they entered Pier 19.

Cross sat tied beneath a hanging industrial light.

Evelyn Hartwell stood behind him.

Victor stood twenty feet away.

Interesting.

They weren’t together.

They were watching each other.

Matteo noticed immediately.

“Family reunion,” Victor said.

“Don’t call it that.”

Victor’s face tightened.

Evelyn laughed.

“You always were sentimental, Victor.”

Matteo looked at Cross.

“Alive?”

Cross nodded.

Evelyn held a gun near his shoulder.

“For now.”

Elena stepped forward.

“What do you think I have?”

Evelyn studied her.

“You look like Rose.”

“She was my mother.”

“In every way that mattered, yes.”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

“What did she take?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Finally, the correct question.”

Victor looked toward Elena.

“Don’t listen to her.”

Evelyn laughed again.

“Still pretending to care?”

Victor’s face darkened.

Matteo saw it.

A fracture.

He could use that.

“Elena brought the ledger,” Matteo said.

Evelyn barely glanced at it.

“I don’t want Antonio’s notebook.”

Victor did.

His eyes remained fixed on Luca’s bag.

Matteo understood.

Different objectives.

“What do you want?” Elena asked.

“A bank access code.”

“I don’t have one.”

“You do.”

Evelyn pointed toward the pendant.

“That opened Antonio’s box.”

“We emptied it.”

“Antonio’s box was a decoy.”

Matteo went still.

“What?”

“Rose created another.”

Elena touched the pendant.

“The key only opened one.”

“The pendant has two halves.”

Elena looked down.

She had never examined its edge closely.

Matteo did now.

A seam.

He twisted gently.

The pendant separated.

Inside was a tiny strip of paper.

Six numbers.

Elena stared.

“All these years…”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“Rose was clever.”

Victor raised his gun.

“Give it to me.”

Evelyn immediately aimed at him.

“Don’t.”

Victor laughed.

“There she is.”

Matteo understood the situation instantly.

Neither trusted the other.

Perfect.

“What’s in the second box?” he asked.

Evelyn looked at Elena.

“Ownership records.”

“Of what?”

“Cerulean.”

Elena frowned.

“Who owns a criminal network?”

Evelyn smiled.

“People who built one from legitimate companies.”

The second box contained bearer certificates and original incorporation records tying Evelyn Hartwell to hundreds of shell companies.

Not just criminal liability.

Financial ownership.

Billions.

Enough to destroy her empire.

Victor wanted the ledger because it proved murders and trafficking.

Evelyn wanted the certificates because they proved her wealth came from Cerulean.

Each needed different evidence destroyed.

Matteo smiled slightly.

“You two should have communicated better.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

Evelyn’s gun shifted.

That was the moment Cross moved.

He threw himself sideways.

Matteo drew.

Gunfire exploded.

Lights shattered.

Elena dropped behind cargo crates.

Luca’s teams fired from above.

Victor disappeared behind a forklift.

Evelyn ran toward the river exit.

Matteo chased her.

He caught her near the loading ramp.

She turned and fired.

The bullet grazed his shoulder.

He tackled her.

The gun skidded away.

Evelyn clawed for another weapon.

Elena appeared and kicked it beneath a container.

Evelyn stared at her.

“You foolish girl.”

Elena stood over her.

“My mother spent twenty years making sure I could end you.”

Police sirens approached.

Cross had called a trusted federal tactical team.

Evelyn smiled from the ground.

“You think this ends with handcuffs?”

“It starts there,” Elena said.

Then an engine roared.

Victor drove a truck straight through the warehouse wall.

Metal screamed.

Everyone scattered.

The truck struck support columns.

Victor jumped from the cab and grabbed the ledger.

Matteo fired.

Missed.

Victor ran toward a waiting speedboat.

Luca chased him.

Evelyn saw her opportunity.

She grabbed Elena by the ankle and pulled.

Elena fell.

Evelyn snatched a broken piece of metal.

Matteo reached them first.

He knocked Evelyn away.

Federal agents swarmed the building.

Within seconds Evelyn was handcuffed.

Victor’s boat disappeared into the black river.

He had escaped.

With the ledger.

Cross approached Matteo.

“Let him.”

Matteo looked at him.

“Why?”

Cross smiled despite blood on his face.

“Because that wasn’t the ledger.”

Luca opened the real bag.

Inside sat Antonio’s notebook.

Elena laughed breathlessly.

Matteo stared toward the river.

Victor had risked everything for a fake.

But then Cross’s expression changed.

“Where’s Isabella?”

Matteo froze.

She had been at the safe house.

Luca immediately checked his phone.

Three missed security alerts.

Matteo called.

No answer.

Then Victor sent a message.

A photograph.

Isabella tied to a chair aboard his boat.
