Chapter 6 - The Secret Caroline Left BehindEvelyn survived the night.

Not the grand Ashford wedding magazines would have expected.
No cathedral.
No thousand guests.
No orchestra.
Just thirty-seven people in Evelyn’s private garden, six security officers positioned beyond the hedges, and enough family resentment to power Manhattan.
Lena wore a simple ivory dress she had designed herself years earlier.
She had found the sketches in an old notebook the night before.
Rosa helped her alter the fabric.
When Lena stepped into the garden, Julian forgot to breathe.
She noticed.
That was dangerous.
He wore a dark suit instead of a tuxedo.
No tie.
No polished billionaire performance.
For once, he looked nervous.
Victoria stood beside her father Richard near the fountain.
Her expression suggested someone had died.
Richard Ashford smiled when Lena approached.
That was worse.
“Ms. Brooks,” he said.
“Mr. Ashford.”
“Soon to be family.”
“Try not to sound devastated.”
His smile widened.
“I understand humor can be useful when someone enters an unfamiliar world.”
Lena met his eyes.
“So can manners.”
Julian appeared beside her.
“That’s enough, Richard.”
Richard raised both hands.
“Just welcoming your bride.”
The ceremony lasted twelve minutes.
Lena expected it to feel fake.
A business arrangement.
A transaction.
Instead, when Julian took her hands, everything felt uncomfortably real.
The officiant spoke about trust.
Commitment.
Partnership.
Lena nearly laughed at the irony.
Then Julian said his vows.
They had agreed to keep them simple.
But his voice changed halfway through.
“I promise to protect your freedom,” he said, looking directly at her. “Even from me.”
That wasn’t scripted.
Lena’s throat tightened.
When it was her turn, she abandoned her prepared words too.
“I promise not to pretend this is something it isn’t.”
Julian’s eyes flickered.
“And I promise not to let your family scare me.”
Someone behind them coughed.
Probably Victoria.
Julian almost smiled.
Then they exchanged rings.
When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, Julian leaned closer.
“Contract says nothing about kissing.”
Lena whispered, “Don’t push your luck.”
He kissed her cheek.
Applause followed.
Evelyn cried openly.
Richard did not clap.
The reception was held inside the townhouse.
Lena barely ate.
She felt watched constantly.
Photographers were not invited, but within an hour, news of the wedding appeared online.
JULIAN ASHFORD SECRETLY MARRIES UNKNOWN WOMAN
Unknown.
Lena stared at the headline.
“That didn’t take long.”
Julian glanced over her shoulder.
“Richard.”
“You’re sure?”
“He wants the press digging into you.”
“They’ll find unpaid parking tickets and a tragic college transcript.”
“Nothing else?”
She looked at him.
“Disappointed?”
“Relieved.”
Later, Evelyn raised a glass.
“To the only woman stubborn enough to tell my grandson no repeatedly and somehow still end up marrying him.”
People laughed.
Even Lena.
Then the lights went out.
Complete darkness.
Someone screamed.
Security moved instantly.
“Stay where you are!”
Marcus’s voice.
Lena felt Julian’s arm around her waist.
“Behind me.”
“No.”
“Lena.”
“I’m not hiding behind you.”
The emergency lights flickered on.
A second scream came from the hallway.
Victoria.
Everyone rushed toward it.
She stood beside a shattered display case.
Inside had been several pieces of Ashford family jewelry.
One was missing.
Evelyn stared.
“My emerald necklace.”
Victoria turned toward Lena.
“She took it.”
Silence.
Lena laughed.
Actually laughed.
“You cannot be serious.”
Victoria pointed.
“I saw her near the case.”
“I walked past it.”
“You were alone.”
“So were twenty people.”
Richard approached calmly.
“No one is accusing anyone.”
“Your daughter literally just accused me.”
Julian stepped between them.
“Search the house.”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“Search her room first.”
Lena’s blood heated.
“Fine.”
Julian looked at her.
“You don’t have to agree.”
“I want this over.”
Marcus went upstairs with two security officers.
Five minutes later, he returned.
His expression told Lena everything.
Julian stared at him.
“What?”
Marcus held up a velvet jewelry pouch.
“Found beneath the mattress in Mrs. Ashford’s bedroom.”
Victoria smiled.
Lena’s stomach dropped.
Julian took the pouch.
Opened it.
The emerald necklace glittered inside.
Richard sighed.
“This is unfortunate.”
Lena looked at Julian.
For one terrible moment, she wondered if he believed it.
Then his face became ice.
“Marcus.”
“Yes?”
“Lock down the townhouse.”
Richard frowned.
“Julian—”
“Nobody leaves.”
Victoria scoffed.
“The thief is standing right there.”
Julian turned toward her.
“No.”
“How can you know?”
“Because Lena didn’t do it.”
His certainty hit her harder than she expected.
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You married her three hours ago.”
“And I trust her more than I trust you.”
Silence fell.
Julian looked at Marcus.
“Pull every camera.”
Marcus hesitated.
“The security feed went down for ninety-two seconds during the blackout.”
“Backup?”
“Local storage may have survived.”
Victoria rolled her eyes.
“This is absurd.”
Lena stared at the necklace.
Then something caught her attention.
A faint brown stain on the velvet pouch.
She lifted it carefully.
“Julian.”
“What?”
“Smell this.”
He stared.
“Excuse me?”
“Just smell it.”
He did.
His expression changed.
“Cigar smoke.”
Lena looked toward Richard.
Richard’s face remained perfectly calm.
But his left hand moved slowly away from his jacket pocket.
Lena had noticed earlier.
He had smoked a cigar beside the fountain before the wedding.
Same sweet, cedar smell.
Victoria laughed nervously.
“Lots of people smoke.”
“Yes,” Lena said.
She examined the pouch.
“Lots of people also wear custom cuff links.”
Caught inside the velvet seam was a tiny silver thread.
Attached to it was a broken decorative clasp.
Julian looked at Richard’s sleeves.
One cuff link was missing.
Richard’s smile disappeared.
Before anyone could speak, Evelyn suddenly collapsed.
The champagne glass fell from her hand.
“Grandmother!”
Julian caught her before she hit the floor.
Everything exploded into movement.
Someone called an ambulance.
Marcus cleared the hallway.
Lena knelt beside Evelyn.
Her eyes fluttered.
“Stay with me.”
Evelyn’s hand found Lena’s.
Weak.
Cold.
Then the old woman whispered something nobody else heard.
“Caroline…”
Lena bent closer.
“What?”
Evelyn’s eyes opened.
“Caroline didn’t run.”
Lena froze.
May you like
Evelyn struggled for breath.
“Richard made her disappear.”
