Chapter 9 - THE FATHER BEHIND THE LIEHarrison fired.

Not because she trusted Vanessa.
She did not.
But because the accusation seemed absurd.
“Vanessa doesn’t inherit anything.”
Thomas smiled without humor.
“You think Vanessa Hale is her legal name?”
Daniel went still.
“What are you talking about?”
Thomas looked at Naomi.
“Check Vanessa’s birth certificate.”
Within an hour, they did.
Vanessa Marie Hale had been born Vanessa Marie Whitmore.
Her father was listed as Harrison Whitmore.
Daniel stared at the report.
“She’s my cousin.”
Thomas nodded.
“Half-cousin.”
Claire felt pieces falling into place.
“Why hide it?”
“Harrison had a relationship with Vanessa’s mother while working in Europe. Richard paid her to keep the child outside the family.”
Daniel stood abruptly.
“I dated her.”
Thomas grimaced.
“You didn’t know.”
“That is not remotely comforting.”
Claire almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Naomi asked, “Does Vanessa know?”
Thomas nodded.
“For years.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire remembered Vanessa arriving in New York three years earlier.
Polished.
Ambitious.
Perfectly positioned to enter Daniel’s circle.
“She targeted him.”
Thomas looked at Claire.
“Yes.”
“Romantically?”
“At first, maybe revenge. Then perhaps something real. People become complicated.”
Claire felt disgust rise in her throat.
“And the company?”
“If Harrison is legally acknowledged as Richard Whitmore’s son—”
Daniel interrupted.
“He’s Richard’s brother.”
Thomas shook his head.
“No.”
Silence.
“Harrison was raised as Richard’s younger brother.”
Eleanor’s family secrets had apparently not yet reached bottom.
Thomas continued.
“He was actually Richard’s illegitimate son, born when Richard was seventeen. Richard’s parents raised Harrison as their child to avoid scandal.”
Daniel stared.
“So Harrison is my half-brother.”
“Technically.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Your niece.”
Daniel sat down heavily.
Maya muttered, “I’m going to need a wall chart.”
Claire ignored her.
“If Vanessa is Harrison’s daughter and Daniel’s niece, what does she inherit?”
Thomas answered.
“If Daniel dies without surviving descendants, Harrison’s branch could challenge succession.”
Claire touched her belly.
“But the baby blocks them.”
“Yes.”
“And if I die but the baby survives?”
“Daniel still has an heir.”
“Then why target me?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because your trust controls the company.”
Claire understood.
“Eleanor becomes trustee.”
“Yes.”
“And if Eleanor is removed?”
Thomas nodded.
“The backup trustee.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Who is that?”
Claire felt cold.
She had signed the documents.
She had trusted the firm.
She tried to remember.
Then it came back.
Daniel had been traveling.
Their attorney suggested naming a family member as secondary trustee.
Claire had rejected Daniel’s cousins.
Eleanor suggested someone close to their generation.
Someone who understood the company.
Claire whispered, “Vanessa.”
Daniel’s face collapsed.
Thomas nodded.
“If you die, Eleanor controls the shares. If Eleanor becomes incapacitated or dies, Vanessa controls them on behalf of your son.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The sedative in Eleanor’s tea.
The surveillance.
The baby blanket.
Vanessa had positioned herself perfectly.
But one thing did not fit.
“She helped us find Northbridge.”
Thomas laughed.
“She helped you find what she wanted you to find.”
Claire opened her eyes.
“She led us to Eleanor.”
“Exactly.”
Daniel stood.
“Where is she?”
Nobody knew.
Vanessa had disappeared from the safe residence three hours earlier.
Her phone was off.
Naomi issued an alert.
Then Claire received a text.
Unknown number.
One photograph.
Vanessa sitting beside Eleanor’s hospital bed.
Taken minutes earlier.
Claire’s blood ran cold.
A message followed.
COME ALONE OR ELEANOR DOESN’T WAKE UP AGAIN.
Daniel immediately said, “No.”
Claire looked at Naomi.
“Trace it.”
“Already trying.”
Another message.
AND DANIEL DOES NOT COME.
Claire showed him.
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re not going.”
Naomi intervened.
“We control the meeting.”
Claire stared at the photograph.
Eleanor looked asleep.
Or unconscious.
She thought of all the things Eleanor had done wrong.
All the lies.
All the judgment.
And all the years she had secretly helped Rose protect workers from Richard.
People were never only one thing.
Claire had learned that painfully.
An address arrived.
An abandoned yacht club on Long Island.
Naomi organized tactical teams.
Claire wore a wire.
Daniel hated every second.
Before she left, he stopped her in the hallway.
“I need to say something.”
“Daniel—”
“Not about us.”
She waited.
“If anything happens—”
“Nothing is happening.”
“Claire.”
She met his eyes.
“I’m sorry I made you feel small when your instincts were trying to protect you.”
Her throat tightened.
Daniel continued.
“I thought being your husband gave me the right to decide what truths you could handle.”
Claire said nothing.
“It didn’t.”
“No.”
“I know.”
He smiled faintly.
She almost did too.
Then he stepped aside.
Claire entered the yacht club alone.
Vanessa stood beside a window overlooking black water.
She wore jeans and a sweater now.
No gold gown.
No glamour.
Eleanor sat tied to a chair.
Awake.
Claire exhaled.
“Let her go.”
Vanessa looked tired.
“Did Thomas tell you everything?”
“Enough.”
“My father is not the villain.”
“Everyone keeps saying that right before revealing another felony.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
Then her expression hardened.
“Thomas killed my mother.”
Claire stopped.
“What?”
“He arranged the accident that killed her eighteen years ago.”
“Why?”
“She was going to expose Richard.”
Claire’s pulse quickened.
“Thomas said Richard created Black Harbor.”
“Thomas says whatever keeps Thomas alive.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“My father spent twenty years trying to prove Thomas controlled the money after Richard died.”
“Then why manipulate Daniel?”
“Because Daniel had access.”
“You could have told him.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Would he have believed me? The secret cousin from Europe claiming his dead grandfather was actually my grandfather and his respected financial network was built on theft?”
“Probably not.”
“So I got close.”
“You got very close.”
Vanessa flinched.
For the first time, shame returned.
“I did love him.”
Claire felt anger.
“You knew he was related to you.”
“Not when we dated in college.”
Daniel had met Vanessa during a semester abroad.
She claimed she learned the truth years later.
Claire did not know whether to believe her.
“What do you want?”
“The red ledger.”
Claire had expected that.
“It isn’t here.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Eleanor spoke weakly.
“Vanessa, stop.”
Vanessa turned.
“You knew who I was.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s mother had known.
Claire felt another betrayal approaching.
Vanessa laughed.
“Of course you did.”
“I learned after you came to New York.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I was trying to protect Daniel.”
Vanessa screamed, “Everyone protects Daniel!”
The outburst echoed through the empty building.
Then she lowered her voice.
“My mother died. My father spent his life running. Thomas built a fortune from money stolen from workers and this family still gets galas and foundations and magazine covers.”
Claire understood the anger.
She did not excuse the actions.
“Did you send the blanket?”
Vanessa stared at her.
“No.”
Claire believed her.
“Did you photograph me?”
“No.”
“Did you poison Eleanor?”
Vanessa laughed in disbelief.
“I found her like this.”
Claire frowned.
“What?”
“She called me.”
Eleanor whispered, “I did.”
Claire looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because I finally remembered who installed the old surveillance system.”
Claire’s heart accelerated.
Eleanor looked at Vanessa.
“Your father.”
Footsteps sounded outside.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“That’s not your FBI team.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
A gunshot shattered the window.
Everyone dropped.
Vanessa lunged toward Claire.
The second shot struck the wall.
“Move!”
Vanessa dragged Claire behind a heavy bar.
Eleanor screamed.
Agents outside returned fire.
A man entered through the rear door.
Tall.
Gray-haired.
Claire recognized him from Rose’s photograph.
Harrison Whitmore.
Vanessa stared.
“Dad?”
Harrison raised a gun.
Not at Claire.
At Vanessa.
Her face broke.
“Dad?”
Harrison whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Claire realized too late.
Vanessa had never been the mastermind.
May you like
She had been another piece on the board.
And the person she trusted most had just come to remove her.
