Chapter 2 - The Room Behind the StudyAlexander reached the staircase before anyone else moved.

The second thing she saw was Vivienne Blackwood’s smile.

Not shock.

Not anger.

A smile.

It lasted less than a second, but Lily saw it.

Then Vivienne screamed.

“You little thief!”

The accusation tore through the Blackwood mansion like a gunshot.

Lily pushed herself onto one trembling elbow.

Her shoulder burned where Vivienne had shoved her.

“I didn’t take anything.”

“Don’t lie to me!”

Vivienne’s heels clicked across the marble as she stormed toward the piano.

Three members of the household staff had already appeared in the doorway.

The chef.

The housekeeper.

And Marcus, the Blackwoods’ security supervisor.

All of them stared at Lily.

Twenty-four years old.

A nanny.

A woman who had spent the past eleven months caring for six-year-old Sophie Blackwood as if the little girl were her own sister.

And now, lying a few feet from Lily’s hand, was a vintage gold Rolex worth more than Lily’s mother had earned in ten years.

Vivienne bent down.

She picked it up between two fingers.

Her face transformed into theatrical disbelief.

“My grandfather’s Rolex.”

Lily’s stomach dropped.

“No.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Mrs. Blackwood—”

“It was locked in my dressing-room safe.”

Vivienne turned slowly toward Lily.

“Only family and trusted staff know that room exists.”

“I’ve never been inside your dressing room.”

Vivienne laughed.

It was cold and quiet.

“Then explain why this was under you.”

Lily looked at the watch.

Ten minutes earlier, Vivienne had summoned her downstairs.

Sophie was at school.

Vivienne had claimed she needed help moving several boxes for a charity auction.

There had been no boxes.

Instead, Vivienne had confronted Lily beside the piano.

She accused her of becoming “too comfortable.”

Then came the insults.

The threat.

And finally the shove.

Now Lily understood.

The confrontation had never been spontaneous.

It had been arranged.

“Call the police,” Vivienne ordered.

Lily’s face went pale.

“Please.”

“Please what?”

“I didn’t steal it.”

Vivienne stepped closer.

“You people always say that.”

The chef looked away.

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

Lily noticed.

He didn’t believe Vivienne.

But he was afraid of her.

Everyone in the house was.

Almost everyone.

“Mommy?”

The small voice came from the staircase.

Everyone froze.

Sophie stood halfway down the steps in her navy school uniform, clutching her backpack.

Her driver must have brought her home early.

Her eyes widened when she saw Lily on the floor.

“Lily!”

She ran down.

Vivienne caught her.

“Stay back.”

“What happened?”

“Your nanny stole from us.”

Sophie stared at her mother.

Then at Lily.

“No, she didn’t.”

“Sophie.”

“She wouldn’t.”

Vivienne’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what adults are capable of.”

Sophie pulled away from her.

“I know Lily.”

Those three words hit harder than the shove.

Vivienne’s expression changed.

For months, Lily had sensed resentment growing between mother and daughter.

Vivienne traveled constantly.

Galas.

Fashion events.

Luxury retreats.

When Sophie woke from nightmares, Lily was there.

When Sophie struggled with reading, Lily stayed late.

When Sophie cried on the anniversary of her older brother’s death, Lily sat beside her until sunrise.

Vivienne had noticed.

And apparently, she had hated it.

The front doors suddenly opened.

A tall man in a charcoal suit walked inside.

Alexander Blackwood stopped when he saw the room.

At forty-one, Alexander was the founder of Blackwood Systems, a cybersecurity company whose technology protected banks, hospitals, and government contractors around the world.

To the public, he was disciplined, private, almost impossible to read.

To Lily, he was simply Sophie’s exhausted father.

He looked at Lily on the floor.

Then at the watch.

Then at his wife.

“What happened?”

Vivienne rushed toward him.

“Thank God you’re home.”

She held up the Rolex.

“We caught her stealing.”

Alexander didn’t answer.

“She took Grandfather’s watch,” Vivienne continued. “She must have gotten into my safe.”

Lily stood slowly.

Her knees shook.

“Mr. Blackwood, I swear—”

Vivienne spun around.

“Stop lying!”

Alexander’s eyes dropped to Lily’s scraped palm.

“Who pushed you?”

Silence.

Vivienne blinked.

“What?”

“I asked who pushed her.”

“She tried to run.”

Lily stared at her.

“That’s not true.”

Vivienne pointed toward the door.

“Marcus, call the police.”

Alexander raised one hand.

“No.”

Vivienne froze.

“No?”

Alexander looked around the room.

His gaze moved toward the ceiling.

Toward a tiny black circle hidden inside an antique smoke detector.

Lily followed his eyes.

She had never noticed it before.

Neither had Vivienne.

Alexander removed his phone from his pocket.

His voice became frighteningly calm.

“Three months ago, someone accessed my study while I was overseas.”

Vivienne’s face changed.

“So?”

“So I installed a private security system.”

Marcus stared at him.

Even he looked surprised.

Alexander unlocked his phone.

“Independent cameras.”

Vivienne stopped breathing.

“Alexander—”

“Cameras nobody in this house knew about.”

Sophie looked from one parent to the other.

Alexander tapped the screen.

Then turned it toward his wife.

The color drained from Vivienne’s face.

On the video, Vivienne was standing beside the piano forty minutes earlier.

Alone.

She opened her handbag.

Removed a gold Rolex.

Bent down.

And slid it beneath the piano.

Lily covered her mouth.

But the video wasn’t finished.

Vivienne reappeared later.

Lily entered the room.

They argued.

Vivienne stepped close.

Then shoved Lily violently to the floor.

The Rolex rolled into view.

Nobody spoke.

Not Marcus.

Not the staff.

Not even Sophie.

Alexander slowly lowered the phone.

Vivienne’s lips trembled.

“I can explain.”

Alexander looked at his wife as if he were seeing a stranger.

“I’m sure you can.”

Then his phone vibrated.

A security alert appeared across the screen.

Alexander frowned.

Someone had entered his private office upstairs.

At that exact moment.

He looked toward Marcus.

“Who else is in this house?”

Marcus went pale.

“No one who should be upstairs.”

A loud crash echoed from the second floor.

Alexander turned toward the staircase.

And Vivienne whispered something Lily would remember for the rest of her life.

“Oh God.”

Alexander looked back at her.

Noticing the terror in her eyes.

“What did you do?”
