Chapter 11 - Midnight at Pier 17The rain started at 11:36.

At 9:17, trading in two of its publicly listed affiliates was temporarily halted.

At 9:42, three major banks suspended credit facilities pending investigation.

By ten, protesters and reporters crowded outside headquarters.

Graham had planned well.

The fraud.

The leaks.

The old footage.

Vanessa’s secret meetings.

Tessa’s shell company.

Each piece alone created doubt.

Together, they created collapse.

Nathan stood inside his office on the forty-eighth floor and watched his empire burn on television.

Tessa sat near the window.

Her leg throbbed.

She should not have been there.

Everybody had told her that.

She came anyway.

Nathan looked at the city.

“Your mother warned me.”

“About what?”

“That fear makes men stupid.”

Tessa smiled faintly.

“She said that about Eli’s first motorcycle too.”

Eli, sitting on the couch, protested.

“It was a scooter.”

“It had an engine.”

“A very small engine.”

Vanessa entered with two attorneys.

“The board voted.”

Nathan turned.

“How bad?”

“Twelve to three.”

“For?”

“Temporary removal as CEO.”

Nathan’s face remained still.

Tessa felt the pain underneath.

Sterling Capital was more than a company to him.

It was the second life he built after nearly losing the first.

“When?”

“Effective immediately.”

Nathan nodded.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.”

“So am I.”

“For what?”

Nathan looked at her.

“For disappearing into this company for ten years and pretending providing everything was the same as being present.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“This is not the moment.”

“Maybe there won’t be another.”

“There will.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

She took his hand.

“But I’m deciding there will.”

Tessa looked away.

Some conversations deserved privacy even inside crowded rooms.

Daniel entered.

“We found Rebecca.”

Tessa stood.

“Where?”

“Hospital.”

“What happened?”

“She was attacked last night.”

Tessa’s heart stopped.

“Is she alive?”

“Yes.”

They rushed to Bellevue.

Rebecca lay beneath white sheets with bruising along one side of her face.

When Tessa entered, her aunt began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

Tessa sat beside her.

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Rebecca took her hand.

“I helped Marianne hide you from Graham.”

“Why did you disappear after Mom died?”

“Because Graham found me.”

Tessa’s stomach turned.

“He threatened Eli.”

Eli stood in the doorway.

Rebecca looked at him.

“He said if I contacted either of you, he would make sure Marianne’s children paid for what she had done.”

Tessa squeezed her hand.

“You should have told us.”

“I was afraid.”

Nathan stood farther back.

Rebecca looked at him.

“You too.”

Nathan approached.

“Me?”

“Marianne wanted me to give you something if Graham returned.”

“What?”

Rebecca pointed toward her bag.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Nathan opened it.

A handwritten password.

Daniel immediately recognized the format.

“Encryption key.”

“For the flash drive?” Tessa asked.

“Possibly.”

They returned to Sterling headquarters.

Forensic analysts entered the key.

An encrypted folder opened.

Inside were hundreds of documents.

Transaction histories.

Emails.

Software logs.

And one audio recording dated three months earlier.

Graham’s voice.

Then another.

Vanessa froze.

“That’s Caleb Mercer.”

Nathan stared.

Caleb was Sterling Capital’s chief financial officer.

The man who had received the anonymous fraud files.

The man supposedly helping investigate them.

In the recording, Caleb said:

“We need Vanessa’s credentials.”

Graham replied:

“She’ll give them to me.”

“And Nathan?”

“By the time he understands, the board will already believe he killed me.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

Caleb continued.

“What about the Monroe girl?”

“Useful.”

Tessa’s skin crawled.

“Why?”

“Because Nathan has one weakness nobody at Sterling understands.”

“What weakness?”

“Guilt.”

Tessa looked at Nathan.

Graham continued.

“He built his whole life trying to prove Marianne Monroe was right about him. Put her daughter in danger and Nathan will stop thinking like a businessman.”

Caleb laughed.

“And Vanessa?”

“She’s easier.”

Vanessa stiffened.

“What does that mean?”

Graham answered the recording.

“Vanessa wants to feel important to her husband again. Give lonely people enough attention and they’ll mistake manipulation for respect.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Nathan looked devastated for her.

The recording continued.

Caleb asked, “And once Sterling is removed?”

“We take the company apart.”

“Your daughter?”

Long pause.

Graham’s voice became colder.

“Tessa is coming with me.”

The recording ended.

Nathan immediately turned to Daniel.

“Where is Caleb?”

Daniel called security.

No answer.

He tried again.

Then his face drained of color.

“What?”

Daniel looked toward the couch.

Eli was gone.

Tessa stared.

“He was just here.”

Daniel checked his phone.

Security footage showed Eli leaving the executive floor four minutes earlier with Caleb Mercer.

Tessa stopped breathing.

Her phone rang.

Graham.

She answered.

“Where is my brother?”

“You really are Marianne’s daughter. No hello.”

“I swear to God—”

“Tessa.”

Graham’s tone chilled.

“Come to Pier 17 at midnight.”

“If you hurt him—”

“Bring the original flash drive.”

“There is no original anymore.”

“You know what I mean.”

“You’re not getting it.”

Eli cried out somewhere in the background.

Tessa’s heart broke.

Graham continued.

“Then your brother won’t see sunrise.”

The line disconnected.

Nathan reached for the phone.

Tessa pulled away.

“No.”

“You’re not going alone.”

“Yes, I am.”

“Tessa.”

“He wants me.”

“He wants leverage.”

“Exactly.”

Nathan’s voice hardened.

“I am not letting you sacrifice yourself.”

She looked at him.

“Seven years ago, my mother risked everything because she believed you could become better than Graham.”

Nathan went silent.

Tessa continued.

“Tonight you prove her right.”

May you like

“How?”

“By trusting me.”
